Advice Anyone?

I don’t want to have to worry about making sure I am eating enough calories etc but I feel like I eat way too much avocado. Not only that I am wanting to make sure that I am not only feeling good while eating raw but I’m being healthy and doing what is right for my body. For example today I ate:

3 bananas ½ of a small watermelon 1 large and 1 small avocado, with 3 smaller tomatoes, onions, garlic, olive oil and some sea salt.

I have some sort of salt everyday and I feel like I don’t eat as much as others that I read on here which worries me, but on the other hand I am not hungry and if I am I eat.

I have huge cravings for avocados and I don’t know what I should be eating in place of them since that is a lot of fat and I eat them most everyday. I like to eat simple and not have to think too much other than grabbing what is in the fridge. If I have to start preparing meals I will go away from raw which is something I don’t want to do. I know that I don’t eat enough dark leafy greens so on Sunday I added in fish, I had salmon and now I feel like I need advice on what to do to continue raw in the right way. Is it bad to eat so little if you aren’t hungry? I used to eat a lot of strawberries and blueberries but I am getting tired of both of them. Maybe I need to start drinking smoothies everyday which will fill me up and the fruits I’m tired of will taste different.

So here are some questions:

1.Is it bad to eat so many avocados?

2.I know that some salt isn’t bad but is eating salt everyday overdone?

3.Am I eating enough food for my body keeping in mind that I am eating when hungry?

I am 22 years old, about 5’6” I weigh around (I haven’t weighed in a few weeks) 157 lbs which when I started eating this way at the beginning of June I weighed 181 lbs. To give you an example of the size of my body which I don’t know if it makes a difference to you when looking at this I am between a size 8 and 10. I work out with water aerobics at least 1 day a week, sometimes 3. I have started Bikram Yoga but have only been 3 times, I’m trying to get on a schedule. I do not have a daily exercise routine though which is what I’m really getting at but I am active at some point every week.

Oh and I thought I would add that when I first started eating raw I would eat a lot more than I do now but slowly I got less and less hungry. Or maybe I was eating more when I wasn’t hungry before out of habit?

first off: the best nourishment is BREATHING. =) ironically, it’s easy to forget when you’re so concerned about your health, right?

secondly: if you are starting to eat raw, ANYTHING from your old diet that you replace with new nutrient-dense raw foods is going to be a step up. it’s what you DON’T eat, not what you do, that makes you healthier.

thirdly: i would a) get moving! (doing some form of stretching or exercise DAILY will SERIOUSLY help you through detox… and in my opinion makes the body better able to communicate what it’s hungry for) b) eat more greens. whether it’s a green smoothie, a blended soup, a big salad… you need your greens for SO many reasons it’s a bore to mention…

but to answer your questions as best i can…

    1. avocados are excellent food. calorie for calorie they are AMAZING power houses of nutrition. not to mention they fill you up without being too hard on the digestive system. you won’t be craving them forever. as long as you don’t feel bad after eating them, there shouldn’t be any problems.

    2. salt is the least of your worries. on the “top priorities” list of widdling away the bad things in one’s diet, i would put raw sea salt VERY VERY VERY VERY low. personally, i’ve tried eliminating it from my diet and i saw no change.

    3. you should ONLY eat when you are hungry. why else would you want to eat? that is totally healthy and GREAT.

  • Thank you pianissima! You made me feel a lot better. I kind of figured that because I’m eating this way I have to be better off anyway but they I do read so much on there about not getting enough calories yadda yadda and I really don’t want to have to think that much about what I eat. I want to eat to live and be healthy but not have it consume my life. Does that make since? So it sounds like I’m doing okay but yes, I do need to get moving more, I totally agree. Thank you for the advice, the support is much needed.

I think that when I was starting out I was eating maybe 4 or 5 times what you are! But that shouldn’t make any difference to you, because you it is good to listen to your own body, and eat what and when your body tells you to.

You list just plain fruit and vegetables, do you make any recipes? Making recipes really can help take your mind of worrying and get you into enjoying it all instead.

What you eat will change as you go forward – no need to worry about it, just flow with what your body wants.

I eat salt every day too. Some believe it is essential to eat salt in order to be properly hydrated. It was mentioned in a book called “The body’s many cries for water” I think. Rock salt with no additives is also a good salt to use. Pink Himalayan salt is rock salt.

  • Thank you Zoe. I want to keep eating this way but of course it is a worry that I’m not eating what I need to be healthy. It sounds like I’m doing okay but like you said, you ate a lot more when you first started, and in the first month or so I did to but then I got less hungry. I read a lot about others that eat much more and it gets me thinking. I need to just listen to my body and stop freaking out is what I need to do. Thanks for the advice!

A little funny- Before going raw, I really did not use avos. I didn’t really ever find a good one and I didn’t like the texture. After about 2 weeks raw, one day i woke up and out of nowhere i HAD to get some avocado. To this day, i have one every day with celtic sea salt. It’s the perfect afternoon food for me. To second Piannissima, eat more greens, not instead of your avo, but the greens help everything in the raw triangle go down properly and metabolize properly. I tend to gravitate to heavier raw foods after 2Pm so i make sure I eat an entire bowl of greens in the evening, even if i’m not so hungry. The same would hold if you are more of a fruit type. If you indulge in a lot of sweet fruits, have them with a big bowl of greens and it’s all ok. If you like avos, you might like your greens with some of the great creamier dressings here. I love the Herbed Vinaigrette by Renee Underkoffler and Red Pepper Aioli herehttp://www.thedailyrawcafe.com/search/label/spread

smoothies will help a lot! I am down to 135 from over 165. It took about 5 months and I’m still getting there. I have a green smoothie or two daily. Sometimes I eat a lot and sometimes I don’t. It takes awhile to figure out what works for you. If you are truly craving avocado and not just in a habit of it, then go for it. The way to check this out is to have something like a green smoothie instead of an avocado and see if the craving is still there. You are probably craving a certain nutrient that you can fulfill another way. As far as nutrient/filling ratio, greens are tops.

Izhpt, i hated avocados before i went vegan, well actually i hated them and olives until 3 years ago, been vegan 8, then suddenly i tested them again and loved them, my two fav foods, however i cant find raw olives here and online they cost a fortune (le sigh)

initailly i found i ate lots when i went raw, now my appetite has lessened and i am satisfied easier. I tend to eat what i fancy, pretty simple during the day but something prepared in the evening.

As someone said on here its not what you do it its what you dont eat that could be a prob with any diet, so i make sure that amongst the things i do eat i also eat certain other things, black seseame seed for calcium, flax seed, an avocado for energy (altho thats not usually left out anyway), i scan around the kitchen to make sure theres nothing vital left out, i try to have beet juice or leaves every day,i think ive got it quite balanced

ive been thinking about adding spirulina, probiotics, and maca to my diet but i have a friend on here who doesnt use them and has the body of an adonis and oozes fitness from every pore, so if he can look like that without them (and they are very dear) i think they are prob an extravagance MMMmmmmm

salt i seem to have massively cut down on, i use miso etc a lot which is quite salty anyway
