Advice needed, totally new!

My background:

I have been an on/off vegetarian for the last ten years (I am 24) and have always been interested in nutrition, often avoiding refined sugar, trying to eat organic, that sort of thing. I tried being a vegan a few years back but just couldn't manage it.

My family is very different to me. They think nothing of eating really cheap frozen meat meals and things I didn't even want to touch as a kid, so I have no support there. They think I'm a bit paranoid, a bit of a hyperchrondriac!

But I've heard so much great stuff about raw food that I want to give it a go. I'm not sure how much I will be able to eat but I will do as much as possible. These are my questions:

- Will it get rid of past sins I have committed? I mean, if I start eating mostly raw foods, does the damage caused by that burger in '98 hang around, or is it nullified?

- If I just eat fruit and veg won't I get diarrohea all day?

- Is organic herbal tea okay?

- I can't buy everything organic. I just can't find it sold. How necessary is it to eat organic? Is there some foods I should make an extra effort for? I'e found carrots and apples are the easiest veg to get organic. I also grow my own organic sprouts.

- How do I make sure I get enough calories/carbs/protein? I am naturally very thin with low blood pressure (just a bit), so I haven't got much room for restricting my food intake.

- How bad are grains? I eat organic cereal for breakfast and have organic cereal bars. I can't imagine cutting out pasta or rice. What if I have it organic and wholegrain?

- Should I continue taking supplements?

- Anything you wish you knew when you started out?

Many thanks. i did look through the forum, but there's so much information!

Yes and thats if there was any damage from eating the burger anyway.

Depending on your digestive system you should be ok:).

    - Is organic herbal tea okay?

Herbal Teas are fine, some good ones are organic jiaogulan, dandelion, nettle leaf and so on.

    - I can't buy everything organic. I just can't find it sold. How necessary is it to eat organic? Is there some foods I should make an extra effort for? I'e found carrots and apples are the easiest veg to get organic. I also grow my own organic sprouts.

Organic is preferred but not necessary unless your juicing in which case organic is needed or you'll need to loose the skin of certain veggies which loses alot of the nutritional content

    - How do I make sure I get enough calories/carbs/protein? I am naturally very thin with low blood pressure (just a bit), so I haven't got much room for restricting my food intake.

Fitday and other sites can show you what your daily caloric intake is, this will help you in designing your daily food for sufficient calories.

We werent really designed to digest grains, but grains such as quiona, millet etc arent all that bad. Unless your going full 100% raw these could make up your other food intake.

    - Should I continue taking supplements?

Yeah sure what supplements are you taking just now out of interest?

    - Anything you wish you knew when you started out?

Fitday and other calorie tracking sites to make sure your getting sufficient calories, ohh and include seaweeds in your diet, full of minerals especially iodine which will be largely missing in other foods, rich in anti-cancer compounds, prebiotic fibre and so on.

    Good luck

In answer to the last question about knowing things, it's not really 'knowing' but I definitly would say, you don't need to get caught in all this gormet raw food that everyone seems to be into. That was my downfall because I couldnt create them so I failed, now I know it's about getting the nutrients and enjoying the flavours of food.

Oh and as for grains. I eat them, I eat quinoa and I'm allergic to wheat and gluten so this suits me well and I can digest it well. I think Quiona is rich in calcium and protein too I believe.

Hey! Way to go, getting into raw foods. The body is an amazing thing, capable of healing itself. If there was damage done to your body by past dietary choices, eating raw foods will help your body to tap into its own healing powers. Organic is always best, but there are a dirty dozen that are the worst for pesticides.http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/nutrition/a/pesticides.htm Other than them, you should be ok with conventional, if you have to choose. If you do start to have tummy trouble, the best thing you can do is tweak your diet to be something that works for you. Most people do alright though. I love herbal tea, and it can be quite healthy for you! Herbs have many health benefits. Nutridiary and crono-meter are both good systems for monitoring your nutritional intake. If you feel ok eating grains, then you should keep eating them! If they become a problem for your in the future, then you can deal with it then.
