Books!

Ok, as the semester is winding down, I know I will soon have time to actually do some pleasure reading. SO excited. Lets hear it, I need some recommendations. Novels, nonfiction, whatever. It doesn’t have to have anything to do with raw, it just has to be FANTASTIC. so…any suggestions?

  • I recently read a interesting book called The Icarus Girl by Helen Oyeyemi. If you are into Sci-fi I would TOTALLY recomend Jack McDevitt. Awesome stuff.

    oh, i LOVE to read…

    here are my favorites:

FICTION: The Life Everlasting, I Capture the Castle, A Passage to India, Everything is Illuminated, The House of the Spirits, The God of Small Things, The #1 Ladies Detective Agency (series), The Handmaid’s Tale

Non-Fiction: Many Minds, Many Masters, Diet for a New America, The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight, The Power of Now

oh i could go on… it really depends on what you like.

  • well here are some books that i recommend to anyone! probably my favorite author of all time is david sedaris. his memoirs are HILARIOUS, and I’m not one to typically laugh out loud while reading. Me Talk Pretty One Day is spectacular, but you will probably end up reading them all once you get started. It been so long since I’ve read any novels, but anything by Tom Robbins, the Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, Kite Runner was good. Nonfiction: Michael Pollan is always interesting—In defense of food and the Omnivore’s Dilemma. I’ll think of more later.

And thanks for all the suggestions pianissima, I’ll check them out!

ooh… i’ll check out david sedaris. if you like funny you might like bill bryson travelogs. it’s embarrassing reading them around people because it’s, like you say, laugh out loud funny. i read “in a sunburnt country” about his trip to australia.

i loved the kite runner! and yes, pollan is great!

  • Ordinary People as Monks and Mystics is fabulous!

I am reading the Anastasia series by Vladamir Megre. It is really interesting. I just ordered book two. She is this woman that lives in the Russian forest and lives of raw wild food and she has all these heightened powers because she is so in touch with nature. She has all these insights into the state of the world, sleeps with the animals etc.

  • runraw: “probably my favorite author of all time is david sedaris.”

OMG! If you think reading David Sedaris is hilarious, you must hear him read his stories aloud. I have a boxed set which includes most of his books and love them. He’s also a frequent contributor to This American Life…

my favorite book has been the Lord of the Rings, always, forever, bar non.

There is a little known British author named Freda Warrington. Her vampire series, Taste of Blood Wine, the Blood Red of Poppies, and a Dance in Blood Velvet are awesome. She also has a wack of fantasy novels. The Rainbow Gate being one of my faves!! This Lady happens to be a dear friend of mine, for over 15 years as well. So go forth and buy her books!!! :)

My most surprising favorite book of all time is David McCullough’s John Adams. The most amazing true story of the unsung hero and a fabulous love story. Everything about it blew my mind. The HBO series is very true to the book. I’m also madly in love with Pride and Prejudice, never ever get tired of it and I loved the more recent Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. A Complaint-Free World was very life-changing for our family, and for me personally – Buddhism for Mothers of Young Children was extremely helpful.

queenfluff—that’s so weird that mention anastasia. i’ve been meaning to check it out… is it as life-altering as they claim?

this is so great… i haven’t heard of most of these!

‘The Power of Now’ is excellent by Eckhart Tolle.

  • I just finished this book and loved it:

in terms of other non-fiction – anything by Michael Pollan (omnivore’s dilemma, in defense of food), “it’s the crude dude” was good too.

fiction – i second eat, pray, love, the time traveler’s wife, the memory keeper’s daughter, a thousand splendid suns.

    ust stuff i’ve enjoyed recently.

pianissima – I have only read the first book so far (right now there are eight in the series) but yes, it is very interesting. If you are into nature and living as close to nature as possible, you will like it. If you are one of those people who are trapped into a “non-natural” existance, it will definately make you think. It makes you forget the world around you while realizing how the answers to the worlds problems could be simplier than we make them (at least, according to Anastasia they are!).

She has all of these insights into how to solve some of the world problems and she has some “super” powers which she says all humans have be just don’t know how to tap into them. She is so “intune” with nature that animals gather food for her and bring it to her. She doesn’t get cold because her body is acclaimed to it (she says that indoor heating and clothes make us sensitive to cold) and that female bears come and snuggle up to her for extra warm at night.

Is it real or not? There is debate amongst people who read it – I would like to believe she exists. She say “I exist for those for whom I exist”. (I think I got that quote right!) So I guess if you want her to be real – than she is. (although there is a picture – real one – of a woman in there that Megre says IS Anastasia)

It really is worth checking out – like I said, if you are into nature and living with nature, you will like it. :)

Shantaram, by Gregory David Roberts. It’s a huge, sprawling, gorgeous, epic story. Big, fat book, it’ll take you a good long time to read it. That’s what I love about books, when they take forever to end!

  • I hope you enjoy these: The Kite Runner, Babylon Sisters, Just Wicked Enough, The Gift, The Laws of Thinking, The Fifth Vial. Enjoy

I am considering getting a used copy of Nature’s First Law – yeah, the David Wolfe rip-off book – Mostlyy because I kept hearing how “in your face” it is so I am curious about that- I thought it might be a “entertaining” read.

    Should I bother with it?;)
