Bowel movements

Okay, so I know you are thinking with a title like that how can this possibly be a good subject. But, it’s a fact of life…so here goes.

I am a holistic nutrition student at CSNN and have a couple of clients as well as myself who have noticed a considerable change in their bowel movements now that they have gone raw.

My question then is: did you notice a change in bowel movements when you went raw? And what can one expect once they have made this change?

Thanks!

Absolutely. They are softer too. (depends what you eat). The first time I went raw, they were greener… but, the guy (whose raw diet I tried) told me it had to do with some mucus or bile-type stuff coming out… wish I could remember exactly which and what he said. This was year ago. They are no longer green like that… unless I have lots of green smoothies.

  • Your bowel movement should float, which is a good sign that you are having regular normal bowel movements.

It also helps to get a stool for the front of the toilet so that you are in a crouching position.

    LOL love the POO forums.

I was chronically constipated my whole life and didn’t know it wasn’t healthy/normal. Being raw is the only way I don’t have that problem any more – I never knew how “regular” felt – hooray for RAW FOOD!!!!!!!!

My biology professor told me that floating poop is how you can tell if you are getting enough fiber. Floaters are filled with an adequate amount of fiber and sinkers are not. You gotta love science. :)

  • haha me too to the green and softer…I moved from sea level to 10,000ft altitude this fall and let me tell you, i have never been so chronically constipated in my life! well that’s gone now thanks to raw. also, it doesn’t smell, like ever! unless I ate cooked food the night before of course, which happens maybe once a week if that. it’s awesome…my IBS is slowwwly starting to improve.

  • my husband calls them veggie poops – they’re the best and don’t stink. lizk – thanks to fasting and raw, my husband was healed of IBS, terrible skin issues, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, weight issues… whenever he eats SAD, those problems start to creep in again. congratulations on your improvement.

mamamilk – thanks for sharing – this and on your profile, and I love your pic of your beautiful family :)

  • I love that family pic, too mamamilk, it is nice to see such a happy, healthy loving, together family!

Yes, I am happy about the no stink part! I am starting to like cooked food less and less for so many reasons! ;)

Yeah, my mom always knows if I’ve been eating something I shouldn’t because of the smell, lol. She’ll usually notice the smell (I sometimes get gas, too) and she’ll ask “What have you been eating?” There’s no getting away with it – funny, since she’s not even raw, but I guess it keeps me on track having her to remind me what we both know works for me ;)

As soon as I went raw, I realized how conventional and NOT NORMAL it is to only have one BM a day! I go at least twice a day, as my body is constantly using and refusing exactly what is needs and does not need. When I was eating only apples for three days, my waste mimicked that exactly. When I eat lots of salad, ditto.

Also, I feel so energized after a good BM, as opposed to frustrated that I didn’t “get it all out” like before I went raw.

I never thought I would discuss these things with a group of strangers…haha! love it!

  • JDJD

Yup, greenish, soft and multiple times a day. Definitely do not have floaters though…that’s a whole lot of fiber!

I know the people at my job must wonder why I go to the bathroom all day – but I BM probably 3.5 times per day on average – as much as 5, usually 3, rarely 2 – the frequency is partially because I’m a grazer and never have a real “meal”. And then from drinking a lot of water, that sends me to the room a few more times.

It’s amazing as everyone else has said. Your body feels so great it really looks JUST like what you ate. It is odorless (by the way, no body odor, too) – and it’s good to hear from someone else that they get more energy as soon as they go. I thought it was only me.

  • we’ve only been trying raw for a week, but i definitely notice a difference. there was a profound change after i went vegan also. (i cured IBS with a vegan diet.)

for the past week i’ve been alternately constipated and having loose stools. when i do go there’s an awful lot and it’s really green. :) that’s probably because i’ve become a complete spirulina fiend over the past week.

my belly never feels very good these days. definitely an adjustment period, i’m sure.

EARTHMOTHER - that baby sure is cute.

  • thanks! that’s willow, and she’s my green smoothie girl. :) you can see more pictures of her green face here:

  • I know what you mean earthmother213, my tummy went through such an awful time when I went all raw, so much so that I gave in to oooked, then went back, got a little better, then cooked, raw, cooked raw, cooked, raw, and now I had a tummy bug and couldn’t stomach anything except some rice and sprouted bread. Feeling better in the tummy, but my psoriasis has kicked up, my skin broke out, and my BM’s are hard, uncomfortable and sinkers. It’s disgusting, I haven’t felt this way for so long. I love my morning BM and then the afternoon one. It’s en-lightening lol!

  • I'm having the opposite problem! I used to be able to go 1 to 3 times a day, and there would be a lot at once. Since I've been raw (only just over 2 weeks), I go less and less and when I do much less comes out. I guess it makes sense because I've been eating less, but the only thing that seems to work for me is eating raw oat groats. Anyone have any suggestions? I've been eating mostly fruit throughout the day, and some vegetables at night. Is there something I should be adding to my diet?

  • superfood2superfood2 Raw Newbie

What fruits and veggies and in what amounts please?

  • scooterjinx, are you eating greens. copious amounts of greens are needed........

  • joannabananajoannabanana Raw Newbie

scooterjinx, you might want to take out the oats. even if you think they are helping, you would be going more often if they were. i used to eat buckwheat groats but when i took them oat (as well as all grains), i was able to go a lot more. the addition of greens definitely helps me too.

  • superfood2superfood2 Raw Newbie

I've gone four times already today (not in a bad way) and I ate no greens yesterday. Greens are not key.

  • J AJ A

Ha that one about biology teacher and floating poop was good! :D:D:D:D

  • troublesjustabubbletroublesjustabubble Raw Newbie

scooterjinx-try less solids. I drink about 100 ounces of green smoothies during the day and that really helps me. If I eat to many bananas I get constipation. ALso, drink more water if you're eating alot of veggies.

  • superfood2, I'm eating mostly the same kind of fruits and veggies as I was when I was on a cooked diet and 'going' all the time. I eat apples, oranges, peaches, pears, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, kiwi, tomatoes, spinach, kale, zucchini, and more almost daily.

joannabanana, I don't think the oat groats are doing me any harm .. I soak them over night and rinse them in the morning, and I've only had it three times in the past two weeks. Maybe you know something more I don't though? For me though, cooked or raw, oats have always made me go.

What kind of greens is everyone else having? I try to have a cup or two of spinach in a smoothie with either a banana or orange and I'll have the kale in the evening. Any suggestions? I tend to eat a lot more fruit than vegetables, maybe that's the problem?

  • Also, I gave up tea since going raw which I think I'm going to start again .. anyone else find that that does the trick? Green tea after my breakfast almost always seemed to set things in motion.

  • LilEarthMuffinLilEarthMuffin Raw Newbie

YES! Before i was raw i would go number two like once a week! not healthy. now im regular and healthy.

  • troublesjustabubbletroublesjustabubble Raw Newbie

mikfizzle! What a cute website. I love it!

The whole reason I tried raw was to get my bowel movements to actually MOVE. I had gone twenty days one time without pooing and finally just took laxatives(which are really freaky by the way) and I'm convinced that on a normal SAD diet without laxatives I would never go. Never.

  • OMG Troubles. I am the same way. I used to go months.. I would take laxatives once a week just to get rid of the bloat feeling.

I still dont go alot now, but I no longer feel like crap either :-)

Off to have my first Colonic tomorrow... wish me luck!

  • ras-saadonras-saadon Raw Newbie

Its been such a long time since I was on a SAD diet I cant remember how it was before, all I do remember is since I went vegan I started pooping more, around twice a day, and on raw even more even 3-4 times, and yea I agree, its softer.

  • wichtenwichten Raw Newbie

Good luck Lobo- colonics are awesome!

I went vegan/raw in attempts to cure my IBS (and its worked!). I agree with everyone else- softer, greener and more often. I never knew it wasn't normal to go every other day until i started reading about health. I think bm's are a topic they need to discuss in health class- what comes out is a sign of the health of the individual- seems pretty important to talk about. thanks for posting the poo thread!
