Buying Fruit in Bulk

WhiteAppleWhiteApple Raw Newbie

I have found myself really increasing my fruit intake with trying to go raw and also trying to be more active. I would imagine a lot of people on here eat a lot of fruit especially if on the 80-10-10. Do you any of you buy fruit in bulk from some place locally? There is not much fruit to be had around here in Indianapolis, Indiana except apples, pears, plums, melons, concord grapes and berries. I have bought apples, pears and plums direct from an orchard in the area. There are peaches that come in from South Carolina sold at the farmer's markets and berries are sold there too but they can get quite expensive. Has anyone here bought in bulk fruit or set up a deal with someone at a farmers market to put the cost down?

I think I remember peaches being around $2(?) a pound what would be a fair barter if I planned on buying like 15 or 20 pounds?

Watermelons and Cantaloupe were around $3-5 each what would be a fair barter if I planned on buying 5-10 melons?

I think blueberries were around $4 for a quart (I think thats the measurement) what if I bought 5 of those?

Any experience/advice in this is appreciated!

    Hi WhiteApple,

I come from Toronto, Canada, so there aren't many options, especially in the winter. I got to the farmer's markets in the summer and the prices of are pretty good, but i've never tried to bargain with them. I'm sure that you could if you bought a lot of the same fruit (i.e. let's say each cantaloupe is $2, then you can ask them if you can buy 6 for $10).

I know that at the grocery store you can sometimes buy some fruit in bulk. I've seen places where you can buy mangoes, avocadoes, persimmons, apples, oranges and bananas in bulk. But I tend to buy what I need for 1 day or 2, rather than tons of fruit because I rather eat them as fresh as possible.

In the winter for berries, I tend to go to Costco and buy frozen strawberries and blueberries that i can put in my smoothies or thaw them and eat them like that. A 2kg bag is about $9-$10, which is much cheaper than buying a quart for $4-$6 (sometimes even $9 for organic strawberries!). I can get 4kg of grapes for $9.99, instead of paying the same price for a small bag at the grocery store. I'm sure that you could find some things in bulk at Cotsco.

I eat melons everyday and I've never found a place where I can get them in bluk. If I could, I would buy TONS! But I check the weekly flyers and sometimes they are specials on certain types of melons (i.e. honeydews for $2.99 or 2 mini watermelons for $5).

I don't know if you find this useful or not, but I hope that it helps a little :)

I have been wanting to Sam's Club which is just like Costco and is owned by Wal-Mart to look for fruit because my mom is a member and she wants to put me on the account. The only thing is the fruit there is not organic at least I don't remember seeing any. But I do eat non-organic things if there is a big price difference or one of the things that they don't use as many pesticides on. I think I might get melons, avocados, pineapples, maybe tomatoes from there and get my organic citrus and bananas elsewhere for now.

I was asking my brother's girlfriend about where she grew up in South Carolina and what fruits they grow there, there are quite a lot an she said there are lots of orchards and fruit stands and orchards in the area. I think I really would like to just camp out in the wilderness there and live off of the fruit for a while either there or maybe more southern sometime this coming summer.

I completly agree with you, I would LOVE to go live in a warmer climate and live of the fruit that grow in nature. It would be so much fresher and cheaper!

I try to get organic produce, but I must admit that most of the time it isn't because I can't afford it. I wash my fruit and vegetables VERY well though.

I know about Sam's Club, we have it too in Canada, but I haven't been there in a while since I'm not a member (my ex was a member). So I just go to Costco, but their produce isn't organic. I guess it'll do until the farmer's market opens up again...in 5 months!
