Clean, Icelandic fish; to eat or not to eat, that is the question.
I’m sorry, TreeOfLife, but they started it. If you’ll look back at the previous posts, you’ll see that.
Even though I’m a former alcoholic, I don’t frown on alcohol use. As destructive as it is, and as many innocent people as it kills, I’m perfectly fine with people who can enjoy alcohol with moderation. I just regret that some vegans don’t seem to be able to show that same tolerance for others.
Kevlar, I’m not trying to point the fingers at anyone saying who started it. I’m just stating that I feel disrespected by every party.
There is no reason to simply label them under “vegans”, we are all people. Everyone here has there own personal issues, it doesn’t mean you can simply categorize them.
I appreciate your efforts to make these walls user friendly!
Enjoy your sun!
Thanks, Jason. I apologize for my disrespect, and I too would like to see this be a safe place for people to exchange information, but, while you won’t have to worry about me anymore, you’ll still have to worry about members like Dodo, who make the whole site (and veganism) look bad.
(logging out for the last time)
This is very sad.
I am well aware of this. People twist the truth to support their belief or opinion.
I understand why Kevlar does not like GoneRaw, as I am in the same boat. Too bad it sounds like he is leaving as I would like to talk to him.
But, people do this all the time. People who are homosexual, change the bible to support their sin. People who are vegans generally do not like to look at truth that is against veganism. (do not get me wrong, I am a vegan, but I love truth).
Lets start ALL over, in light of the TRUTH. Shall we?
As per belikeyeshua: People who are homosexual, change the bible to support their sin
Wow. Think you dropped a bomb with that one, belikeyeshua. Pretty reprehensible statement. Care to explain?
I do not want to get into a big religious (I HATE religion) debate or argument, about this. Furthermore, I know that you are a ‘atheist’.
However, because you asked, I will answer your question.
According to the bible, homosexuality IS a sin. If you want to talk about God, we have to talk about him according to his book.
Now, people who are homosexual (its just an example, there are thousand of other things), and are christian, have to twist scripture in order to support what they believe. There are so many different translations of the bible, and some good, others REALLY bad. This is why I love to read the hebrew and greek (though I know very little of that still).
There are pastors of ‘churches’ that preach on how God is ‘okay’ with homosexuality. They take diferent snips and pieces of the bible, different translations and the like, and paraphrase it, twist it, sop that it will support their lifestyle, or their sin,
It is the same with health foods, the same with everything,
If I told you that coffee was unhealthy, and you liked coffee, you just have to read online or in books, about how healthy coffee is and twist the truth to support your belief, or your doings (drinking coffee). Not saying drinking coffee is wrong, though it is unhealthy.
I hope I have explained this well enough.
God bless you.
You all are in my prayers.
Not that they are christian, but they call themselves a christian. And they do not even have to say they are Christian, the same is true.
belikeyeshua, your explanation was quite enlightening. Especially the part where you state I’m an atheist. You don’t know me, have no idea about my spiritual life, but feel free enough to label me. Good to know your arguments and opinions are grounded in truth, and that there is “only 1 book.” I also admire your mystical powers because you obviously know more about me than I do about myself. Bravo!
Please refrain from being sarcastic.
I have no ‘mystical powers’ of my own. You can read a lot about a lot online these days, and on threads… Enough to know much about a person.
Furthermore, you asked… and I answered.
What I mean, mon46, is if you really want to chew me out.. I would appreciate it if you did JUST THAT, in honesty, not while being sarcastic.
from fish to religion, how did that happen. my two cents worth altho it usually gets me into trouble, i am agnostic, i dont believe the bible was written by or on behalf of god, i believe it was written by differnt people over a period of time who for whatever reason believed what they were writing. I do believe there is something there, because there are too many unanswered questions otherwise.
IF the bible were real, i think that times have changed so drastically in the time since it was written that altho there is some good advice in there “not killing or stealing is usually pretty good advice” a lot of the book is no longer relevent to our times. most of the rules were written to protect the people, for example babies outside of marriage was a really bad idea in days of yore as there were no benefits or child care facilities for single parents, this is no longer true. a single parent, a gay couple, older parents, surrogate parents, all have just as much capacity to provide a loving stable enviroment as any married couple.
No recipricated adult love is wrong, if two people love each other, and want to dedicate there lives to each other that should be fine with everyone, we do not have the right to judge people and tell them their love is wrong.
i dont want to cause any waves but how do you know that the person that wrote that part of the bible wasnt just a homophobe, maybe his wife ran off with another woman or something, you just dont know
if you told me and could prove to me that coffee was bad for me i would give it up (as i did actually 2 months ago for that precise reason), that is something based on fact. fact is indisputable. the bible is unproven, god is unproven, the things that the bible tells you to accept as fact are all unproven. blind faith may be a supporting crutch to communities etc but it is not fact, and to tell people they are wrong for how they were born is not on.
I know this flies in the face of what you hold dear and i dont mean to offend, i am just saying its not very nice to say things like that, its personnaly insulting to anyone in a gay relationship.
my sister is religious, she doesnt talk to me as she wants to bring her son up in religion and is worried i might sway him otherwise, if her faith is so strong whats she worried about? ive never even been allowed to meet him, i would not say that is normal behaviour for a mother.
i am married and not gay before you ask altho i have had relationships with women in the past.
my husbands father is gay and has lived with his partner for nearly 20 years, he is an arts teacher and his husband is a shrink.
gay people are not monsters, they are my family, my friends, normal, loving , compassion people, just the same as you and i and are doing nothing wrong and hurting noone.
and should i mention dinosaurs? :)
Well, this is a fascinating thread. From fish to :”The Bible”. I believe the fish was the first symbol of Christianity, before the cross – a life-form rather than an instrument of execution. (Every time I see a little gold cross around someone’s neck, I imagine…a little gold guillotine…electric chair…syringe..) The fish seems more a bit more life-offering than the crucifix or electric chair as a symbol of faith & hope.
In the U.S. we see little bumper stickers of that early Christian symbol, just a few simple lines representing a fish. What used to be a secret symbol drawn on rocks & cave walls is now a plastic sticker on many cars around the cesspool of congested traffic & fumes that is our nation’s proud Capital,Washington D.C. and, of course, everywhere else here, from Maine to California. Wow. Cultures change, symbols can endure. From Eating Fish to the Christian religion may not be much of a leap, after all.
There’s no question that the Bible was written by a diverse bunch of very human beings, with their own agendas, and within an historical context very different than what we’re living today. And no dispute that not one author of the New Testament was within 40 years of it’s primary subject, an individual referred to as “Jesus”. Just two historical sources, Josephus & Tacitus, referred to an individual very popular among the Roman-oppressed Jewish people, who was crucified (a very common form of execution at the time). There is not ONE eyewitness to “Jesus” that can be even remotely historically documented.
I would invite anyone who is devout in ANY religion to explore as much as they can about the historical roots of their religion and challenge them to prove to THEMSELVES their beliefs were defined by “God”, rather than humans forming beliefs about “God” within historical context. It makes little sense to me to take beliefs about “God” dating back centuries and apply them to the early 21st century.
As far as the morality of the Bible – whew, that is one piece of very sick, twisted, sh**. Opposed to homosexuality? How about giving up your daughters to be gang-raped? That’s in the Bible, and proffered as moral. It’s full of horrifying stories like that. I was raised Catholic, but the more I read the Bible (which is not encouraged by Catholics, BTW), the more I said I want no part of it. I prefer my kind, gentle homosexual friends, thank you. Many of whom are Christian, sadly. I guess they haven’t actually read the Bible, or its history.
So you want to eat fish? Knock yourself out. Eat fish. You don’t need this forum’s or anyone’s permission to eat fish, or to eat much of anything (tho I understand eating human flesh is pretty much frowned upon by the laws in ALL countries, even where its tacitly permitted). Humans can survive eating all kinds of things. Ya don’t need a big thread to eat fish or not. Eat it or don’t. Up to you. See how you feel. And as far as the subtleties of mercury, etc. – do you drive a car, or even breathe on a street corner of any city? If so, you’ve got your toxins equivalent to a few ounces of fish in a day of breathing your ambient air.
There is no such thing as purity in this modern world. The question for me is what makes me feel whole, alert & alive on a daily basis, and I just feel much better eating mostly raw vegan. It’s no big deal.Just take care of yourself as best you can in our toxic world, and when you’re strong & well, do your best to take care of the whole of the planet where you can from your little place in it.
Wish you well! And I encourage you to research the history of Christianity. Know as much as you can about the roots of your beliefs. And “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone”.
(dodo, BTW, I love your posts)
thanks redemma, i think theres a few who arent so keen on my posts, but i say it as i see it. brings me down a bit when people get nasty about it, but i get over it quick enough :)
Dodo – You’re awesome, girl! & if I could upload an avatar, you’d see more red hair! The myth of red hair & fiery temperament sometimes really coincides, tho we are more often labeled “fiery” “feisty” when we are female, and “assertive” “authoritative” if we are male. However, I digress from the thread, which is fish. Or perhaps the morphing of Fish to religion, (the original author of the thread took it there, so I offer NO apologies). Perhaps the real theme now is the soupiness of questions about food & morality. I’ve been up writing on this thread because my S.O. is snoring so much I can’t sleep; he’s utterly oblivious. But…did anything I said make sense?
well it did to me, that doesnt necessarily mean it did to anyone else tho, im a little outside the box :)
redemma: I like your posts, yours too dodo. I also like life outside the box, with the dinosaurs…
so theres a any christians thread, a hello athiest and agnostic thread, maybe someone will start a think outside the box thread! (joking, theres far too much catagorising goes on already)
redema and springleaf, lets do the dinosaur dance :)
Think outside of the box that you are thinking outside of.
there IS no box, im already on the outside of the box, i escaped the box , come, join me ;)
Please, as your screen name indicates…. ‘Be Like Yeshua’. Let God be God. I trust that in your own way you probably mean well in all this (as you have in many of your other posts from months gone by….). : )
Trying to argue, change or indoctrinate people only puts a wedge between you and others. Walk in love and instead of making inflamatory remarks let the journey BE for each person as you share loving thoughts and ideas. (that’s what Yeshua did.)
Iceland, huh? That sounds tremendously interesting. Does any produce grow there at all? It should be a great adventure, but cold!
This has to do more with the US fishing industry but perhaps it could persuade those who eat fish to consider the consequences on Marine Mammals from commercial fisheries:
From the HSUS: “The U.S. government estimates that as many as 100,000 marine mammals are killed or injured by the U.S. commercial fishing industry each year. These deaths and injuries result from boat collisions, entanglements in fishing gear, and entrapments as nontarget species (often called bycatch).”
From the HSUS regarding fish: “Intelligent, fast learners, and as varied in personality and habits as you can imagine. Read more about fish and other aquatic animals”
Thank you Joyce – great articles for thought. Also, another poster mentioned seaweed for nutrients. So I read that cabbage, turnip, rutabaga and potatoes grow in Iceland. If I were there, I’d eat the potatoes cooked and the others either raw or cooked. Also, BeLikeYeshua, look into the concept of geothermal hothouses (if you don’t make your own, maybe there is a local one you can help cultivate and work in?) that way, you can grow other fruits/veggies without the impact of having it all shipped in…
Sorry but I am very busy right now and regardless, I am NOT trying to argue about anything. I guess you guys can argue if you want to.
This thread was about fish….
Or was supposed to be. Regardless, if people ask me a question, I WILL answer it.
Also, I HATE religion.
No, its not that cold at all.
They have produce, in Reykjavik. Elsewhere there is not so much.
don’t be silly. you knew exactly what kind of a response your first comment about homosexuals was going to provoke. if you do not wish to get into a religious debate, because you “hate religion”, then don’t drop bombs like that on a public forum and then expect everyone to get past it and not argue with you.
and please, don’t say something like “i was just using it as an analogy.” i doubt you are thick enough to believe the comment would not provoke response, and as you could just as easily have used another example to illustrate your point about health food, i have no choice but to conclude that you DID intentionally provoke a religious debate.
I started this thread because I wanted answers, on fish and no one wants to talk about fish, it seems (being good or bad).
Thanks for the people that have wrote, it was a real help.
Any other forums out there besides goneraw? No offense to Ray and Kandace, but I am starting to dislike this forum.
belikeyeshua, If I were you, I would eat the fish if you are hungry. I hope you have a wonderful, healthy experience in your journeys.
Regarding your homosexuality statement, I don’t “get” why so many Christians focus so much on that sin, and so many times forget about the more often mentioned sins of pride, hypocrisy, gluttony, lying. lust, etc etc etc.
I fully agree with you.
In God’s eyes, however.. all sins are equal. Meaning that a guy that murdered 100,000 people would receive the same punishment as someone who lied. That is, if they do not repent.
Anyhow, I am not focusing on any sin, really.
God bless you!
