Container Gardening and non-gmo seeds/seedlings

So I noticed that our local Lowes store has a supply of wine barrels that have been cut in half. I was thinking that wine barrels might be a great way to garden. Has anyone here tried container gardening? Any tips on mutually beneficial plant groupings? I've read that corn, beans, and squash do well together. Any other suggestions?

Also, can anyone recommend a place to purchase certified non-gmo seeds and seedlings?

Thanks!

I am not familiar with the process and treatment of wine barrels. So you might want to check that out. To make sure nothing leaks out and into the roots of your plants. But overall it beats the use of plastic. Here is an older thread that was posted on GR. If you pan down you will see some organic seed suppliers that were listed.

  • Great point, Simply Raw. Thank you very much. I will try to find out more about how wine barrels are processed and treated.

I found this link earlier today that shows some interesting ideas with wine barrels. http://10yearchallenge.com/2008/10/27/photo-album-creative-use-of-umbrellas-new-raised-beds-wine-barrel-planters-and-metal-roof/

Thanks for the post to the earlier thread. I had no idea there were so many non-gmo suppliers. It's been a long time since I had a garden. Need to get my green thumb going again. It's so much more affordable to juice what's in the back yard. :)

I have grown more modest vegetables, such as lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, chard, spinash, radishes and some herbs, in regular plastic containers. My profile picture has the first harvest of the past season. I got that container full every three to four days. I learned that these small containers can grow much more vegetables than what I expected! I currently have several lettuce plants that I moved inside before the first frost, as soon as the weather improves, I will take the container out and will have home grown lettuce in a week or so!

  • I order my seeds from Seed Savers Exchange http://www.seedsavers.org/

It does not say if they are non-GMO certified, but I am hoping they are not modified since they come from heirloom seeds. I'll have to contact them.

I suggest requesting a catalog. Just wait until you see the variety of heirloom tomatoes they have!

  • That's a bountiful plate there, rawlizard. It makes my mouth water remembering how awesome home grown veggies taste! The ground where I live is IMPOSSIBLE unless you're growing cactus. I've tried traditional gardening methods, but when summer comes on strong it's like an oven outside...and summer comes on early. I was excited at the possibility of using wine barrels, but I'd love to go smaller. When you say "regular plastic containers" what exactly do you mean? How small can I go?

greeneyedlady - thanks for the link. Seed Savers is fabulous! Those heirloom Brandywine's are looking soooo delicious! I love to make home made V8 (or V5 or V10...whatever I have in the fridge!). I could make it every day with these.
