December - Community Journal

Hi Everyone,

I thought that I would start a topic where we could all record our daily adventures with raw. Here we can share our daily food intake (with references to recipes on this site), our joys, struggles, support for one another and questions. Everyone at every stage of raw is welcome, of course :)

As someone who has wanted to become raw but has struggled..I think that it is valuable to record the foods that I eat (to become more conscious), and read about the day-to day experience of others. I hope that others feel the same! :)

I was thinking that we could follow a format so that it is easy to read…

Each post could start with:

The date
Food Intake – e.g. Recipe from Gone Raw – Spinach Salad
Thoughts for the Day

What does everyone think?

I just think that it is so valuable to share experieces., and to learn from and support one another. I feel that the entire board is a great support systyem, I love it, but would like to share the day-to-day.

Well, I’m off to bed and here’s to going going gone raw tomorrow!

Best,

Sunrise

I have used www.fitday.com as a food diary and journal and found it to be very helpful as well.

sunrise sounds fun! so heres my input for saturday dec 1st: two bananas and some almond butter for breakfast with my nonraw cup of roosbos tea, after my yoga and morning horse chores ill make a super c green smoothie with citrus( i have tangerines and oranges and limes) spinach, water and date syrup for sweetness.) We are going out for dinner so that will be some sort of salad and ill snack on some nuts until then.

thought of the day: feeling very grateful for my wonderful hubby, this uncharacteristic deluge type rain we never get here in san diego, and my pretty darn good life….

  • December 1st – omshanti, your day sounds very tasty!

Today I had an apple, a handful of raw almonds, I went to a great vegetarian restaurant and had a plate full of marinated cucumber with dill, beets, marinated cabbage, avocado and tomato salad, and dandelion greens. I found the dandelion greens bitter so couldn’t eat them all. I went to a farmer’s market and bought raw nori rolls. I ate most of one, but my stomach became upset. I think that the cashew filling may be too rich for me right now – I am sipping on lemon water to try and settle my stomach.

Thought for the day – I am grateful that I live in a place and a time where I can choose how to nourish myself.

  • Sounds great, sunrise. I’ll contribute!

    1 December 2007
    Breakfast – blueberry/pear smoothie (3 cups blueberries, 3 pears)

I went hiking with my girlfriend, and during the hike ate 2 oz pine nuts, 1 oz pumpkin seeds, and four bananas.

Lunch – a green smoothie: one young coconut, 326 grams spinach, 175 grams asparagus, 185 grams kale, 1 tsp hempseed, 1 tsp flaxseed meal

Dinner – I was on a live televison shoot, and TV production crews are usually fed poorly, but tonight there was a salad that was other than iceburg. I ate 3 cups of romaine lettuce, a bit of carrots, cucumbers, and tomato. During the shoot and later when striking the set I ate five tangerines, three bananas, one ounce of walnuts, and one ounce of pumpkin seeds.

I’m skinny, but still trying to cut back on dietary fat while getting enough protein. Today’s fat totalled 113 grams, or about 30% of my calories.

Thought for the day: “In the garden of gentle sanity, may you be bombarded by coconuts of wakefulness.” -Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche

  • 2 December 2007
Breakfast – Fruit smoothie: one young coconut, 2 mangoes, 125 grams blueberries, 340 grams raspberries, 454 grams blackberries, 2 starfruits, 2 kiwis, 2 tsp flaxseed meal, 2 tsp hempseed

    Three hours of meditation.

Lunch – Green smoothie: 293 grams kale, 530 grams strawberries, 3 bananas

    Snack – 13 tangerines, 2 apples, 503 grams cantaloupe, 2 bananas

    Passed on dinner.

dec 2 : breakfast a bannana, lunch thai spring rolls with traditional thai salad( mostly romaine with cabbage and carrot shredds ,onion and chilli lime dressing with mint.( yes the thai spring rolls where wrapped in rice paper but filled with veggies and i have them hold the tofu) dinner was a collard wrap stuffed with onion sprouts, cucumber, tomatoe and pesto( made with pistachios and basil) oh and i had two dates and some almonds for a snack.

It was laundry day, and rest for a very trying week ahead(everyone send a little love this way, ill need it!
thought for yesterday: doesnt everything look fabulous and clear after the rain? washed the dust off of everything including the air…

  • Dec 3 – Omshanti – All the best for your week ahead!
Shane – your smoothies sound delish!

(I am skipping my food for December 2 – I think that a better approach will be for me to write what I am going to eat for the day – plan ahead!) So here it goes – I am going to eat lightly today…

Morning coffee (am going to gradually quit) and a green iced tea (will stop drinking those as well)

Two apples, two tangerines, a few handfuls of almonds, a pure fruit drink from Booster juice,
a few large carrots, a radish maybe and lots of water.

I know that this isn’t much food but I want to cleanse a little. My plan is to eat something small every two hours.

Thought for the day: I am blessed to have winter clothes and a place to call home.

  • December 3

    Great idea!

    Breakfast: Banana
Snack: onion bread and creamy cashew herbed cheese
Lunch: spinach, tomato and pinapple soup with cilantro, tomato herbed bread (I’m into tomatoe’s currently :) )
    Dinner: Green smoothie

I am so grateful for the wonderful sunshine today and for my DH

  • December 3
Breakfast-Everybody loves a red head juice
    Snack-Green Giant Smoothie
    Lunch-Faux Tuna with salad
Afternoon Snack-A handful of dates filled with tahini (so simple and yet, so good)
    Post afternoon- Coconut Chai Drink
Dinner-Slices of Melon and cup of hot tea.

I eat constantly, while it keeps me going, I end up snacking instead of eating and I have dropped a few pounds but when my day doesn’t allow for it I get kinda cranky lol.

  • Today (December 3) I ate…

For breakfast, a green smoothie: one young coconut, 251g Boston lettuce, 299g bok choy, 234g collards, 404g pineapple.

I took the day off work and cycled 48-miles in the cold and wind. Not so bright. During the ride, I ate 8 bananas and 5 tangerines. I got so cold and wind-chapped I stopped to drink 32oz of green tea, and to sulk.

Lunch/Dinner, a green smoothie: one young coconut, 309g Swiss chard, 189g dandelion greens, 341g celery, 448g pears.

Thoughts? The thing about eating is that as long as you’re alive to do it, you’ll get a chance for another meal. So if you ate poorly in your last meal, don’t freak. You get to start over again and again. Every meal is a choice, and our bodies forgive even when we don’t always get it right.

  • omshantiomshanti Raw Newbie

shane, love your thought for the day! we have to remember to be kind to ourselves! harmonylia, i eat constantly too! my gramma always said ” I eat one meal a day…all day long! ” LOL

  • December 4th-

Well yesterday I ate raw all day and then had a veggie burger for dinner. I think that I am an emotional eater – especially since I gave up smoking about 5 years ago.

Oh well, as Shane said “You get to start over again and again. Every meal is a choice, and our bodies forgive even when we don

  • December 4
Great day, all raw yesterday and feeling great.
    Today’s menu plan:
    Lemon and water
    Green Smoothie breakfast
Onion Bread and Herbed Cashew Spread snack
    Marinated Broccli, Spinach, Tomato lunch
    Green Smoothie dinner

    What are you grateful for?
I am grateful for the wonderful fruits and veggies provided for my family and myself.
I am grateful to share this experience with others.

    Have a wonderful day.

  • Thanks everyone for continuing to share the experience. It’s enlightening to read what others eat. Often this raw thing gets lonely. I’m surrounded by people who think I’m some sort of foodie freak because I’m interested in the broccoli. I’m sure you know what I mean.

Sunrise, you’re upset about drinking coffee. But the evidence that coffee is somehow evil isn’t really in. Coffee has a lot of good aspects – antioxidants, etc. I love coffee, and it was very hard to finally quit it entirely. I switched to green tea, but still do battle when I smell coffee in the shops. If you can find dandelion root tea it tastes a lot like coffee, and maybe it could be a sub? Either way, be easy on yourself, go slowly and peacefully.

Here is my foodishness story for December 4th…

    Breakfast – a smoothie: young coconut, 3 mangoes, 567g strawberries, 247g kale

Lunch – a whoppingly giant salad: mixed field greens, spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, white mushrooms, alfalfa sprouts, cucumbers, red bell pepper, burp…my tongue turned green

Snack – 12 tangerines, 1 apple, 1/2 cup grapes, 1 oz walnuts, 1 oz almonds, 1 oz pumpkin seeds, 20 oz green tea, 20 oz African red bush tea (Starbucks, I know, they suck)

Dinner – a green smoothie: 289g green leaf lettuce, 234g collard greens, 479g bok choy, 237g asparagus, 1 very ripe banana (this whole affair was not very tasty and, sadly, I had to chuck some of it out before I gagged)

  • Oh shane, coffee is my favorite supposedly evil item, I cannot go by a starbucks without smiling a bit and never mind a dunkin donuts, I need to hold myself back. Don’t beat yourself up too much about the coffee Sunrise, every day is a new one, and I cannot imagine coffee being your ultimate demise. It does get dietarily lonely in my house, I’m the only raw foodie here and my husband thinks I’m depriving myself by eating fresh fruits and vegetables because it’s not what he’s used to. It is great reading about everyone elses daily intakes.

    So, December 4
Morning-cranberry, apple, lemon, lime, orange and yellow beet root juiced. SOOO good.
    Mid Morning-Green Giant Smoothie
    Snack-Oh my oatmeal cookies
Lunch-Tomato hot and sour soup with macadamia nut cream
    Snack-Banana
    Dinner-large salad with faux tuna
Dessert-Stuffed dates with tahini and agave rolled in coconut! Super yummy.
NOW-my second cup of tea, and lookin for a third, I love the sugar plum and spice tea

good morning all, ah yes coffee, it was a bitch to kick, but boy it smells great doesnt it? im all about peppermint tea now but it took a while! here is my food plan so far:breakfast: half a papaya, several persimmons, peppermint tea then making a huge spinach pear cilantro smoothie to take with me for day two of hell( hells, hours are currently 9 to 4:30 tack on a hour and a half drive to both ends and the fact that its inside in a cold conference room,21 stories up, it contains lawyers and mean people…ugh)lunch will be avocinni alfredo with fresh tomatoes and some dates with tahini for dessert( thanks harmonylia) dinner: well… i have a nut burgr in the fridge maybe that or a big old salad. we’ll see what i have the energy for! oh yeah i did get my cenote salad last night for dinner but i fell victim to chips and salsa and a pretty big margarita…it was a rough day! grin

observation from yesterday: after everyone grabbed a deli lunch except me who ate my scrumptuos home made thai fresh rolls, the entire room full of folks i was with, wilted…their little eyes glazed over, there was much yawning and nodding and some grumpy attitudes too…then everyone had to run for coffee and some chocolate that was everywhere in this place in bowls! then i witnessed the metamorphasis and they all became giddy and silly….Its like being the only sober person at a drunken party…amazing that these folks dont tie any of this into what they consume!!!

thought for today: im grateful for the clarity raw foods gives me figuratively , mentally, an physically. Its like eating sunshine!

  • Omshanti you made me laugh with the coffee, I have gone to drinking tea too, it’s not quite the same, but que sera sera. It is snowing here and quite pretty to look at yet, I am not too thrilled about the coldness. I am on the verge of succombing to a cold my daughter brought home from school, so for today my eating has been:
Breakfast: (all in the juicer)1 head of garlic, 1 lime, 1 orange, 1/2 cup black grapes, 1 cup cranberries, a small piece of ginger, and an apple juice
MidMorning: Green Giant Smoothie with a persimmon in place of the banana
Lunch: Faux tuna (I made a bunch and it is soooo yummy) with essene bread warmed in my dehydrator
    Snack: Coconut Chai Tea
Dinner: I have salad waiting for me
Dessert: Probably dates n’ tahini (Dahinies :> )

I am so grateful to be able to make myself feel better, take better care of my family and blast a cold right from the very depths of my lungs using raw food.

  • December 5th -

Today I’ve had my usual coffee, green iced tea
    Fruit cup
A sprout salad (store bought, pretty good)
Two bites of a store bought raw curry nori wrap – couldn’t eat it!
A raw carob fudge cookie (made myself eat it because it was $6.00) – not very good
A maui juice from Booster juice
    A carrot
Going to have a blooming tea with a friend

Thought for the day – I noticed that I buy a lot of things already made from the store – and I don’t really enjoy them. I am going to spend the time to make more things fresh!

  • December 5 -

Breakfast – a fruit smoothie: a young coconut, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, cranberries, flaxseed, hempseed

Lunch – a very big salad: mixed spring greens, spinach, red bell pepper, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, sprouts, cucumber

Snack – 20 oz green tea, an apple, seven tangerines, two pears, 170g raspberries, one oz walnuts

Thoughts? I ate a few handfuls of Planter’s Mixed Nuts at this gathering I attended. They were roasted nuts, very salty, very good, and I want more. I’m craving them this very moment. So this brings up a question. People say “listen to your body.” But how do you know when it’s your mind craving something (eg, roasted, salted nuts in a can) and when it’s your body craving something? Because right now, when I think about roasted mixed nuts, uh-hum, frankly I salivate like an excited dog.

  • BluedolfinBluedolfin Raw Newbie

Shane~ Doesn’t your right butt cheek twinge when it’s your mind craving something? ;)

  • Hi Shane,

I think that your mind craves when you want and your body craves when you need.

I think that when your body needs something it is more objective and when your mind wants something it is subjective. So, when you have a handful of roasted peanuts, you find them pleasurable and you want more – your mind is telling you that the taste of the nuts was satisfying.

But then you ask your body – why did I enjoy those nuts so much, why do I want more of them? Do I need some salt? Would some cucumbers with sea salt suffice? Etc, etc.

Failing that, you could always follow Bluedolfin’s method!

  • omshantiomshanti Raw Newbie

dec 6th: Shane, hmmm cravings….well if your belly didnt protest then maybe you needed some of those “narsty” planters nuts but i think one thing i agree with is the more cooked foods you eat the more you want…i had those chips and salsa the other day, no joke five chips and less than two tblsp of salsa it was all i could do to not try some of my hubbys burrito with chicken. yuck! But yesterday that had past and i wanted my home made thai spring rolls, and greens

Harmonylia, which untuna recipe do you use? i lived on ani phyo recipe all summer! love the stuff….

Breakfast:that nut burger i mentioned, snack: two dates and a persimmon, lunch: two thai rolls Dinner: green papaya salad and two more thai rolls

TODAY: is christmas tree decorating day but im not sure how that is going to work as its raining cats and dogs out there surely all the trees are soaked!hmmm but as for food, since my christnmas party is saturday im sure there will be lots of tasteing going on during the prep so I wont break up into catagories as it will be nonstop im sure! hahahahaha

dec 7th so far: one persimmon, one date, spinach salad with cilantro and curry dressing later (im sure) brownie tasting, nutmeat ball tasteing various nutmeatball dipping sauses tasting, onion bread batter tasteing, maple ball tasteing,( and what the heck) a thia spring roll( since it seems like a trend) spicey untuna roll tasteing…christmas crannberry sushi( a dessert ill post in recipes if it works) soooo it will be a cornucopia of nosh! hahahaha I actually ate a kale asperagus, spinach salad for dinner and a veggie sushi roll with seaweed salad for lunch snack whilst unbaking was some raw macadamias( yes to all of the above! grin

thought for the day: dang its wet out there, im thankful for my warm dry house and the fact that hell week is over. yay

  • She’s a funny blue dolphin, isn’t she? So, in cetacean-speak would that translate to twitchy right tail fluke when craving?

Thanks Sunrise and Omshanti for the craving comments. After the Planter’s peanuts, I craved peanut butter for much of the day. So I bought some. I’ve been eating it, spoonful by spoonful. I confess. Eight spoonfuls by the time the moon was high above the dark pines. It’s very good, that processed junk, and I bought organic “valencia” peanut butter with no ingredients added other than “roasted Valencia peanuts.”

    Dec 6 -

    December 8th
Breakfast: green smoothie avec lime juice, clementine juice and savoy cabbage YUM
    Lunch: avocado and 4 dates
Appetizer: green smoothie with small handful of watermelon, 1/2 ruby red grapefruit and key lime
Dinner: 2 asian pears, another green smoothie (other half of grapefruit, another key lime, no watermelon) and tonight I’m going to a non-raw girls-night for boardgames…they are having wine, I’ll bring pineapple.
...maybe another green smoothie if I can’t wait for breakfast =D
I’m FULL. Hey ever since ‘they’ let seedless watermelon take over, I find there is (what appears to be) fat or starch within most of the melon. I used to love black-seeded watermelon SO much, but I can’t even stand this seedless stuff in my mouth, I gag thinking about the texture. There was only 2 handfuls of what I consider to be ‘real’ smooth red watermelon in this big one I bought. Any thoughts on the watermelon nowadays?

  • DelphineDelphine Raw Newbie

According to the person in charge of the organic fruits & vegetables in the local healthfood store I go to, they are genetically modified hybrids made to please people who cannot stand the seeds. I do not like them either, they just does taste right. Same for the seedless organic grapes.
Also, the non organic watermelons, which I never buy, are one of most spread with pesticides fruit.
    May this be helpful.
    Wishing you the very best

dec 8th the day of the christmas party: I ate some decidedly non raw stuff in small quantities, two pieces of cheese some cholcolate, a bite of lemon bread and a few veggie chips however my meals yesterday consisted of raw sushi and two bannanas and a persimmon.

It was great fun and blue dolphin brought a very nice mushroom basil salad, hope the horse talk did not bore her to badly!!! we are a rowdy group!
thought for the day: I love being aware of the fact that the non raw stuff i put in my body affects it, this may be twisted but i like knowing my runny nose is from cheese, there is something reaffirming about it.
