detox???

Hello! I have some questions about detox. I went from a SAD diet to 100% raw three weeks ago because I want to improve my health overall and lose a bit of weight. I’ve read some about detox but I don’t think I’m detoxing at all. I feel fine and haven’t really noticed much change. I did lose five pounds the first two weeks but haven’t lost anymore the past week. Is it too early for me to be experiencing detox or am I just not realizing it? Should I be doing something else to help the detox along?

Also, I’m wondering if I am eating enough. I eat whenever I’m hungry and I eat mostly green smoothies and salads but I usually eat under 1000 calories a day. Should I try to eat more even though I’m not really hungry?

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Thanks!

  • I am not a nutritionist or dietitian (my disclaimer), but I’m not so sure you want to eat below 1000 calories a day. This may send your body into fat conserving mode instead of fat burning mode. There are many calorie calculators online that give you precise calorie consumption ranges based on your height, weight, age, etc. My suggestion is to find out what you body needs to survive, then maybe cut the calories by a few hundred to loose the extra weight. And of course if you are exercising or lifting weights like crazy, your weight may actually go up a little initially. (don’t freak out) This happened to me when I went raw last October.

Brittany – the most important thing i’ve learned is to listen to your body. If all you want to eat if fruit one day, then eat fruit. Your body changes from day to day. If your eating/drinking green smoothies, maybe add a mango or a fruit that is higher in calories – or add some Avacado to your salad. I lost about 5 pounds my first month and didn’t lose anything for a while after that. Then, all of a sudden, i started to lose some weight. I’ve lost a little over 20 pounds in 10 months. I’ve got about 15 more pounds to go. The most important thing is that your feeling better!!! I feel better and stronger than i ever have!!! Good luck to you!

  • Vegfean – Thanks! I checked out one of those calorie calculators and I’m going to try to eat more throughout the day. Maybe I’ll try eating 5 times instead of 3. :)

Carrie – Thanks! I’ll definitely keep that in mind!

I wonder if eating too little may have something to do with my lack of detox symptoms?

i have in the past confused “not hungry” with “getting used to starving myself.” just a though. =)

also, one would have little to do with the other, since the LESS calories you consume the more you are likely to feel your detox. if you are losing weight then you are shedding toxins. it doesn’t necessarily mean you are going to feel like crap.
