Detox Side Effects & IBS

Hi, I've been a vegan for 1 year now. I've had Irritable Bowel syndrome, I've been thinking about Raw Veganism for while. I have tried to eat raw for 5 days and I started to have more BMs. Is it true that through the detox process that I'll get diarrhea?

I've went back to some cooked foods, because of the fear of that side effect.

Is there some foods that are raw that can help reduce that effect. Thank you. I appreciate all the help.

  • Thanks for the reply. I was more concerned about the Detox effect of going Raw. Like diarrhea, I wanted to know how I can manage it while going through detox?

Bananas are supposed to help. They are high in soluble fiber which provides density (gross im sorry). Make sure you pick ones that are really ripe. People are commonly mistaken about how to pick ripe bananas. The more black spots on the peel the better, just so long as the bruises don't affect the actual fruit. You'll find they digest better and they also contain more antioxidants. Maybe try experimenting with different levels of ripeness, but I definitely found that more black spots are better.

You can eat as many bananas you want a day. They provide the same amount of protein as in breast milk. People commonly eat 10+ bananas a day. There are no adverse health effects.

Hiiii I have been eating to heal IBS for a couple weeks now. What I've done is cut out veggies unless they are steamed or juiced. And only eating sweet fruit. I got the book self healing colitis and crohns by david wolf.

I'm kind of bummed the healing process seems to take a long time and I am impatient... The book is really great and I'd totally recommend it. I can have normal BMs but it does require a rather restricted diet. I do poop kind of a lot though but it's better than never...

Good luck and let me know if there is anything specific you want to talk about.

ps sorry i'm kind of distracted while writing this

Hey ! I had a similar problem, but I didn't have IBS before raw. When I first tried to go high raw I had trouble. I now know that some things don't work for me in large quantities, notably nuts ! Seeds seem fine... If I eat nuts, I will go the the restroom too much. Steer clear of sprouted grains except buckwheat for a while, too. The fiber content is enormous and it will irritate you. I gave myself a spastic colon eating barley and oats.

Introduce dehydrated foods, breads, cookies, bananas into your diet if possible. It's a lot of prep work, but it will slow things down a lot !

If not, I had a GREAT improvement when I started a liver/parasite cleanse from a brand called Xantis. Now, living in France myself, I don't know if this brand is available to you. However, it regulated my bile production and at first I was 100 per cent raw no problems.

My intestinal problems were almost completely relieved when I was eating LOTS of green salads with shredded veggies on top and LOTS OF FATS to slow things down. Oils, nut butters (not nuts), etc.

    Good luck

also, if you are not 100 per cent raw and you are not against eating sprouted grain bread, go for it. It will slow things down for you.

  • At the moment I'm not 100% Raw, I eat some Quinoa and some cooked veggies, stuff like that. For a Colon Cleanse, well I have an appointment for a Colon Hydrotherapy in 2 wks. I find it's the easier one for me and less stressful. There is some things that I try to eat in moderation because of what it might do to me.

    Thank you.

  • I have IBS and I recommend that you avoid fatty foods. Try eating mono meals of your favorite fruits to see what agrees with you. Personally I am able to eat of papayas, bananas, watermelon, cantaloupe, peeled apples, tomatoes and peeled cucumbers (just to name a few) with no problems. Stay away from vegetables for a while until you finish going through the fruits. Also I don't think you should go to the colon hydrotherapy session; the procedure interferes with the symbiotic relationship that the microorganisms living in your digestive tract have. Good luck!

I hate to butt in here, but agree with the idea about a hydrotherapist. Your body does NOT need help doing it's job. I did hydrotherapy for a while and it made my muscles weaker. I believe that exercise and saunas are sufficient for detoxification. I don't think I'll ever do hydrotherapy again. If I ever feel the need to speed up detox or clean out my colon I'll try a fast.

  • Hi there!

I've had IBS for about 5 years now. I went from Veg to Vegan 2 years ago and have been off and on raw for the last year, more so trying to be 90 to 100% in the last few months. I do feel like Colon Cleanses don't help when it comes to IBS. Your body needs regularity and substance, when you mess with it like doing a fast or colon cleanse then it gets all confused and acts up.

I have found that juicing is great on my tummy and a wonderful way to get a lot of nutrients!! I also agree with the comment about nuts, hard for me too. I LOVE them but can't do too many, I'm usally fine though if they are in some sort of a recipe with other items. And seeds are much better.

I've found that using Natalia Rose's methods... juice in the am, fruit til noon and food combining are your best bets. Best of luck :)

Any other advice on going to the bathroom too much? I have to go three times in the morning. This is not cool as I have class, and I don't like to leave the room to go to the bathroom. It is socially embarassing.

Would probiotics help? I see one that contains clay in it, that might help with rapid transit.

Other than that, am I getting too many greens? I feel so good on greens and see it in my skin, but ever since I upped the greens I've had the problem.

I drink 2 8oz glasses of water like the second I wake up. It might help you go at home instead of inc lass? This is all I can think of. Maybe the greens aren't helping either, I don't know.

Zinfandel, does David Wolfe suggest steaming the veggies?

  • most people get diarrhea while fasting/cleansing. it's totally normal. to help with ibs symptoms, eat raw or very lightly cooked potatoes. red or sweet potatoes are the best. they will help a lot. they heal your digestive tract.

also, the more bananas ripen, the more acidic they get. the sugar content also goes up as they ripen. bananas are healthiest to eat when the peels are yellow with a little green. if you are experiencing diarrhea while you are detoxing cosume things with plenty of electrolytes to rehydrate your body (coconut water has a lot).

carnap, maybe try not eating solid foods in the morning. i have class, too, and it seems like my best "going to the bathroom time" is in the morning. i only drink juice in the morning and then around 11 or 12, i have brunch- usually some fruit and dehydrated bread/crackers. it's tough to eat at school because there is no refrigerator to use so everything has to be room temp. food.

i also take probiotics every day just because i want to keep my dig. track healthy. i have the dr.natura probiotics.
