eating while sick?

So… I know that the raw food diet makes you feel happy, vibrant, and full of energy – but what about when you are sick? Normally, when eating cooked foods, people tend to crave bread, easy to digest foods. So.. on a raw foods diet, what could a person eat when they are sick? what would be comforting and calming and not too intense on the stomach?

Are you talking sick as in stomach discomforts or head colds???

Since I’ve been raw I have yet to have a full blown head cold/sore throat, or any of that. If I feel something like that coming on I make a little blended drink of lemon, parsley, little bit of basil, garlic, tad of ginger, tad of honey, and it clears me up immediately. I may have a couple of these drinks and I’m good to go. But as far as needing comforting, a nice cup of tea will do the trick!

  • If I feel myself getting sick and I sense that it will not go away on its own, I fast for three days. When I am sick all of my elimination organs start acting up and purging the toxins from my body (mucous membranes, sinus, bowel, skin, etc.). Fasting lets those organs concentrate soley on elimination instead of digestion as well. Without fail, after the second day my symptoms are gone and the third day just cleans me put even deeper.

P.S. By fasting I mean not eating anything and drinking only water.

Adjusting to new “sick foods” has been very strange for me. I’m rarely sick, but I tended to gravitate to the same types of things any time I was feeling bad (monthly cycle times too). Interestingly, they are all the same things that actually made me feel worse: crackers, bread, soda, etc. I try to water fast when I can (I think it’s the best thing you can do, also), but I often feel the need to have something more substantial or just something different.

Young coconut water has replaced my old gatorade habit. If I’m hungry, I’ll sometimes make a simple pudding out of the meat, too.

Warm lemon water is great, and I also like to make ginger tea or homemade ginger ale (minced or juiced ginger, date paste, mineral water).

I mostly have fruit when I feel like munching on something. Whatever type appeals to me most…

  • When I got the flu (for some reason I got it 3 times this winter, but it only lasted about 1 day rather than the week or longer that it affected others), I ate bananas and other gentle fruits. I would say that most fresh juice, other than citrus, would also be easy on the stomach. Hope that helps you a little! Peace

Fruit, fruit, fruit! I think citrus would be great, as well as any high Vit C fruit… cantaloupe, tomato, cherries, papaya. Pineapple too!

  • Ideally, when you’re sick, it’s best to juice fast, to give your digestive system a break, so you have more energy to heal. But I know it’s hard when you’re not feeling well because most of us want comfort food. So I think the best thing is fasting, if not fasting perhaps fruit, maybe watermelon because it’s so cleansing and easy to digest.

  • I agree with all that has been said above me, and just to clear for myself and if I may to you also, It is time (sickness) for the body and mind to clean themselves, so no need, if it is not urgent to eat something, take the time and give nature to heal himself.

  • Instintively all animals will stop eating and sleep while they feel ill. Humans lost all instincts when we started to live in cities with all of the modern conveniences of life. If we follow what insticts we used to have we will do the same as animals and stop eating and sleep until we feel better. Water fasts are the best way to deal with illness.

people tend to crave bread, easy to digest foods

Not sure if you are assuming breads are easy to digest but if you are it is the complete opposite, breads are some of the most difficult to digest foods, in fact they usually putrify in the digestive system and do not digest.

this is an old thread, but i find myself at 5 in the morning with a TERRIBLE head cold and sore throat, too. i called off work for today because i was supposed to go in at 4 pm (same shift tomorrow, too- oh no haha). anyway, i slept for maybe 3 hours but i just feel like crap. i want to try the basil parsley drink that coconutty mentioned but i have no sweeteners of any kind. i think i'll have to make a trip to the health foods store for some raw honey. i definitely have a lot of mucus and can't stop spitting and blowing my nose. it's really fun haha

if any of you know some other remedies, please post them!! i really appreciate it.

ps- thanks for you guys wishing me a happy birthday this past week! i'm supposed to have my birthday party this sunday so i hope i'm not sick for that. i'm making this beautiful blueberry mango pie that i've had my eye on for a while (mangoes are my newfound obsession). i'll probably make it regardless of whether i'm sick or not. i love pie!

I saw someone recently posted to this so I think I will too! I myself got sick! Boo! I was wondering if I would even find anything on sickness here because so many people say they never get colds. I dont get many colds but I normally get one per year and it is normally around this time. I dont think Raw foodist's are super humans and completely immune to getting colds. It does happen to the best of us!

JoannaB~ I also have this lame ass head cold I cant seem to stop blowing my nose. My throat was hella hurting the first two days as well and I had to sleep with a cough drop in my mouth to stay asleep. Lame. Anyways I am living off soups and juices. I did however just have a salad but that was really my first solid food in two days. I was really just in the mood to make my own dressing so thats why I had the salad. I made a AWESOME Corn Chowder and Tomato Basil Soup. Both were really comforting. Besides that I have been living with a cup of hot tea by my side as well. Fasting may work for some people but I think it is important to get nutrients in the body to speed recovery.

Cheers and lets hope we feel better!

iliveyourdream, i'm better today but i basically lived off of green smoothies. i can't starve myself while i'm sick because that just makes me sicker. i was craving greens like crazy so i probably had at least 2 blenderfulls of smoothie a day. have you heard of neilmed? it's a saline flush that comes with a squirt bottle. i flushed my nose out twice a day and that was like the best thing i've ever done. it cleared up a lot of the mucus so i'd definitely recommend it- even just making saltwater and squirting it up your nose would help tons.

it was the first time i was sick this entire year (without raw- i would've been sick at least 6 times already) and i was so proud that i didn't take medicine!!! my recovery time was a lot faster as well. when i used to get colds, i'd be sick for 2 weeks.

so just rest and watch movies, girl!! you'll feel better soon!

    Laughs and agrees with Zoe

I have been high raw for about 3 years now. I don't get sick. In the winter, I do get cold in the evenings. I usually put water in the coffee maker and have hot tea or hot water. That warms me down.

When I ate dairy, I did catch colds and have monthly PMS bouts. All gone now.

When I am mad (mind sick) I tend to not want to eat. I'll usually consume a couple of pieces of fruit.
