Feeling bloated with too many greens

Hi everyone,

Sorry if this is TMI, but I have been eating a lot of salads lately. I started with a lot of ingredients and have now worked my way to a daily spring mix (arugula, baby spinach, etc.). However, now my stomach always feel very bloated and my digestive system does not feel so "clean." Is this common? Any recommendations on what to do would be greatly appreciated!

I am new to raw and really want to do it right and stick with it!

What are you eating on a daily basis? If you give us more information about what you eat every day I am sure we can help you out with this and get you feeling more comfortable!

The issue may be with combinations of what you are eating or if you are eating a lot of nuts or something, so more info please ;)

  • Dont ,mix fruits and vegetables together, they dont mix well.

Soak your nuts and seeds :)

  • I always mix greens into my smoothies without a problem. Didn't you mean not to mix fruit and fat, corecries? Anyway-it's possible you are mixing fruit in the salad and having fats in the dressing so that combination would certainly cause some bloating. The greens and a more savory dressing should be fine--even fine to add your sea vegetables and some soaked nuts/seeds if you tolerate them. i just would not put fruit in the salad because of the fat in the dressing--not because of the greens. Keep in mind many people put nuts and seeds in the morning fruit smoothie without any problem. I'm not one of those people.

Ahhh, this would explain things today. I have gotten better at making lunch for school or at least bringing a few snacky type raw items to stash in my drawer at school. Today I had a huge kale salad (with Tbsp flax oil, avocado, hemp seed and some salt/pepper/sea veg) but after I made it I was grabbing stuff from the fridge and realized I had a cup of blackberries so I threw them in thinking nothing of it. Tasted great, but I had slight bloating from gas when I got home a few hours later....at least I know why!!

I have grad class tonight, I'll just keep drinking water/tea all night and hope it helps.

I know mint and ginger teas are good for GI, but do they also work for bloating?

I won't be making this combo again(now I know), but if other things sneak by me what herbal teas can help?

I think in addition to the fruit/veg/fat combining issue, you might have overloaded your system with fibre. Blackberries have a lot of fibre, as do kale and avocado.

  • I did mean fruit and veggies together, they produce gas.

Didnt know about fruits and fats, thanks :)

  • Fruits and Veggies/greens combined have never given me bloaty-ness or gas... Most of the time, I can only eat salads if I toss some fruit in it for flavor. I never use dressings. I'll do squirts of lemon juice, or recently my favorite, mix some apple cider vinegar, a little bit of agave nectar, and a pinch of himilayan salt with a dash of pepper, and marinate my greens in that before tossing fruit on.

greens and fruits are OK mixed together. it's fruits and veggies that are supposed to not combine well. it does sound like a lot of fiber to me. but you will get used to it. chances are it's not the greens causing the bloating but something else.

  • I just read "Green for Life" by victoria boutenko (all about the benefits of greens/ green smoothies) - she suggests our jaws and teeth have weakened to the point where it's difficult to chew our greens well enough for proper digestion, which can result in gas and bloating. Maybe try chewing your greens better or blending them up in smoothies?

  • oh I just remembered something else from the book! Victoria devotes a large section to the importance of hydrochloric acid (stomach acid) which is essential for breaking down food and assimilating nutrients. Many people have low stomach acidity which can lead to gas and bloating among other symptoms. This is something that can be checked at your next Dr. visit or by eating beets and checking to see if the color of your urine is affected (if it turns pink your stomach acid is low).
