foods that act as a diuretic?

Hi all, does anyone have any suggestions for foods that act as a diuretic? I have in the past been prescribed water pills, (Lasix) for water retention that happens monthly. I have since stopped taking this medication but still have significant discomfort.

Any feedback will be much appreciated. thanks!

There have been a number of discussions on this subject in the last several months. Here's the link to a search for diuretics.

This thread, although speaking specifically to pregnancy, seems to have a lot of good information. I personally use the juice of a lemon in water first thing in the morning. As a result, I generally only have to use lasix when I've eaten something extremely loaded with sodium (like seafood when I'm in Florida . . . I know - not raw).

  • fresh papaya, fresh grapefruit, raw chickpea hummus, those usually work for me

Watermelon or any other types of melons

  • hi, asparagus is a good kidney cleanser. It makes your urine smell but I was thinking recently, perhaps that's because it is flushing out toxins. Would agree with emptdmom about water with lemon juice too, and just ensure that you stay rehydrated properly throughout the day. Do not drink too much water at any one time though, best to space it out over the day. Good luck!

  • I second that. Watermelon. Just had some yesterday...hahaha. lets just say it works

I would think any fruit, but how you react to it also depends on how much fat you have eaten prior.

Flaxseeds.....will bloat you up and then clean you out after a couple days, but drink a lot of water and be prepared for one day of bloat, perhaps.
