Freeze-Dried Foods

MeditatingMeditating Raw Newbie

I have been reading lately about freeze-dried foods. I didn’t find much on the processing but what I read indicates no chemicals are used and more of the nutritional content remains compared to other preservation methods including conventional freezing.

Many fruits and other foods are available in freeze-dried form and I was thinking about seeking out these alternatives when I can’t get fresh products.

I have no idea what impact it has on flavor.

Anyone have info on the subject, have tried freeze-dried products, or know a supplier of organic, freeze-dried fruits, maca, etc, please let me hear from you. Thanks.

Meditatin, I have bought some freeze-dried fruits in the past(just once) from Justtomatoes: http://www.justtomatoes.com

The fruits are raw and they also sell some organics. I don’t know if the veggies have been first blanched, so I would ask.

There is another site that sells both dried and freeze-dried foods in larger amounts, but I can’t remember the name. I’ll look it up. I’m interested in fruits for the winter, also. And truly raw dried veggies, so it’s something I need to look into more.

TOMS MOM – Thanks for the link. I think I found the other site you were talking about that sells in bulk.

Did you like the flavor of your pruducts and how did you use them?

I thought I would try some fruits and use them in smoothies. I was also hoping I could find freeze dried versions of the powdered goods I already purchase like maca, cacao and bee pollen.

The only things I bought were the non-organic, freeze-dried raspberries and cherries. I thought they were delicious. Over-priced, but so good! I just ate them like candy! I meant to hydrate them, but never got around to it, haha. Greed got the better of me.

Oh, I think smoothies would be great with them!

What was the name of the bulk company? I think I’ll get some stuff for winter.

    Hi All

Whole Foods Market has some freeze dried vegetables, I have tried the mixed and really liked the green beans. But since going raw I looked at their ingredients and it seems they have added dextrin or maltodextrin… can’t remember which but I did not purchase for that reason.

Would love to find a source for bulk freeze-dried too!

Justtomatoes has some of their products available in bulk, and as their name suggests, they don’t add anything to their products. I think their peas are totally awesome, and very addictive. You can order directly from them at justtomatoes.com.

    Thanks ambiguous!

I have tried their peaches, raspberries, strawberries and their garlic… they were all good… but did not stay crisp very long after opening.

When the strawberries were crisp… I ground some in my coffee grinder and used the powder in my iced green tea for a wonderful strawberry drink in the summer! :)

I’ve been wondering about the just tomatoes, peas, etc. I always eye them up, but wondered about the taste. do you snack on them dry, or rehydrate them?

TOMS MOM Thanks for the heads up on Just Tomatoes having organic fruits. I have never seen the organic versions in stores.

CHICORY I bought some the other day to taste them. They taste freeze-dried. I re-hydrated some berries and I would use them in a smoothie. I would actually prefer to find them in freeze-dried powder form because I am only interested in them for smoothies and the powder form takes up much less storage space.

QTLAYLA Google “bulk freeze dried food” and you will find several sources.
