gastrointestinal distress

Has anyone experienced this: I’m about two months into being about 90-100% raw and suddenly I have all this gastro symtpoms (totally bloated, rumbling, indigestion etc.) I’ve been pretty good at following basic food combining rules and had a colonic a few weeks ago. Help! I don’t want to stop eating this way but this feels horrible!

  • Hi I hope you feel better. Adding aloe to your smoothie mgt help. Also here is some info if you didn’t know it already about ginger that could help.

Ginger has been used traditionally for thousands of years for healing purposes within the Eastern Ayurvedic and Chinese Medicine Systems. Ginger inhibits the synthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes, has antioxidant properties, and has pain relieving effects as a result of its ability to inhibit the release of substance P, in a similar way to capsaicin. The pungent principles (oleoresin) are thought to be the most pharmacologically active components of ginger.

It is useful in treating stomach ache, rheumatism, gastrointestinal problems, arthritis, toothache and migraine.

  • My recommendation would be to start eating lighter, simpler, cleaner raw foods without all the nuts and spices. I would start drinking a lot of fresh juices and eat smaller portions. Try not to combine too many foods and ingredients in one meal, keep it clean, simple and light. Blended foods are easier to digest than whole. Raw broccoli, nuts, seeds, cauliflower…hard to digest. Enjoy lots of melons, juices, small light salads, small amounts of fruits or smoothies at a time. Try mono eating at least one meal..example, eat only one type of fruit for a meal. Watch the combinations and amounts and remember juices really do cleanse and heal.

I completely 2nd what lauraj said! Great info for you to follow!

I have experienced the same problems in the past and was confused because I was wondering how the heck I was having these problems when I was eating so healthy. Eating light and simple completely cleared it up for me! The more raw you get and the longer you go, the more sensitive your body will be to bad eating habits, whether it be eating too much or bad food combining. Good luck to you :-)

Hi There, Could do with some more info about what you eat in order to help you.

What is your normal day’s food?

What kind of nuts, oils and sweetners do you use?

When you eat cooked food what kind of cooked food is it?

When do you eat, and how much do you eat?

  • Zoe - Here is the rundown. I usually start the day with a cup of tea with almond milk and stevia. Then a green juice. Later in the morning I have more green juice, fruit, or green smoothie. Lunch is usually raw salad with 1/4 avocado and 1/4 bar 74% dark chocolate (or I skip the avo and have a lara bar after the salad). Later I have a snack - veg. juice, fruit or carrots. I might have another nibble of chocolate. Dinner is something like raw s salad/no-rice sushi. After, some chocolate, frozen banana, maybe a raw cookie. Non-raw stuff is the chocolate (Natalia Rose suggests it), 1 to 2 cups of black coffee. I had been having a little puffed rice cereal (Kashi) at night but I gave that up about 2 weeks ago. Any advice?

Once raw, your body starts to become natural and will let you know about small mistakes you are making with eating the wrong foods. I have found ayurveda to be very good, if you’re a vata type, blended raw food is going to be much better for you with added spices and herbs.

Thanks gmom. What I see here is that whilst you are doing great by giving your body green drinks and fresh salad, you also eat coffee and chocolate which has caffeine and other nasties in it. Coffee and tea and chocolate is tough on your body, very tough. And as your body is trying to heal itself with the fresh good stuff, and then it is getting thwarted by the coffee etc.

Whatever the reason Natalie Rose suggests chocolate for, surely you are getting it from your raw foods? Is her advice for raw fooders or cooked fooders?

Rather than give up raw food, I believe that you could try to live without the coffee, tea and chocolate for a few weeks and see how you feel.

I know how I felt after quitting coffe, and I was all raw apart from the coffee. I lost alot of weight/water retention, stomach bloating disappeared, and I felt happier than I ever have done. It was a huge difference for me.

Perhaps you could wean yourself off it by replacing it with a non caffeine hot drink like roosboch tea, until you go 100%

If you try going 100% raw just for 2 weeks, it would be a great thing, and it will show you what you are like with no cooked food in you at all. You will meet your raw self, your true self. And if it is only for a couple of weeks then it takes the pressure off. Good Luck, I hope everything straightens out for you.
