Help! Family of 6 having a hard time with raw

Hi,

We are finding that one of us constipates with nuts; any suggestions? Also, we are having a hard time with finding it cheap and easy….do you know of any good cheapy natural markets or easier recipes? Thank you-Missa—oh, and can someone explain how to sprout? We really appreciate your time and help; this is something we are determined to do and educating our children to spread their information to all as well:) Have the best day!

  • Hi Miss Amber! One thing you could do is take a banana and flatten it out with a rolling pin or a plastic glass if the kids are doing their own and put blue berries or strawberries (any fruit)inside- then roll the banana up. Put on a plate and cover with blended strawberries, dates blended with water to make a syrup, or any other fruit. This would be a great evening snack or breakfast. You could even try to grow some strawberries as a project. They’re pretty easy to grow.

The biggest sprouts are probaby sunflower sprouts and they can be put in a jar and soaked for a couple hours and then rinsed a couple times a day. Any sprout is pretty easy you just have to remember to rinse a couple times a day and make sure they have air circulation- like a jar with a piece of screen covering the top held in place by a rubber band. They only take a couple days.

Make sure and eat plenty of raisins, prunes, and plums and I don’t think you’ll have a problem going to the bathroom. Drink plenty of water! I hope this helps a little!

Here’s a link to get your sprouts started:

Nuts are hard to digest for many people. Do you soak them? Soaking and rinsing removes some of the phytates, acids that hinder digestion. Acidic food causes mucus and slows down the digestive process. Eat more nutrient rich, fat-free foods, like greens and fruit. Watermelon and plums are great for cleaning out the sludge.

Smoothies, particularly green smoothies, will stretch the budget and provide nutritious meals.

  • Ironically, raw fresh fruits and veggies are cheaper than meat and processed, canned or packaged SAD foods. Sure, nuts are expensive, but they can be hard to digest anyway. I also find a lot of gourmet raw recipes are simply unaffordable to make. I recommend you look for the recipes which are simple and easy to make and don’t have a ton of ingredients. Try raw pastas, smoothies, soups, salads, puddings, pates, dips, trail mix, chips, jicama fries and burgers, etc. You can’t beat whole fresh fruit and veggies for filling you up, no muss with no fuss. If you really do plan on staying raw, you might want to invest in some kitchen appliances if you don’t have any. But these are not imperative. I usually eat very simply but I try to plan a nice recipe once in awhile that might require a few more ingredients and which may cost a pretty penny, but the way I do this is eat simply the entire week and each time I do a grocery run I might get, say, a couple ingredients like pine nuts or something I will need to sprout for the recipe I have planned to make later that week. Raw doesn’t need to be hard or costly. You don’t need to make gourmet raw recipes every day and night. I would love to know anyone who can afford to, seriously. But you can’t get better than what Mother Nature provides us in her most basic, fresh, raw, whole form. Juicy peaches, crisp salads, creamy papaya, you name it. Raw soups are also simple to make and don’t usually require a ton of ingredients. Try Shazzie’s “Detox Delights” and “Detox Your World”, or Jennifer Cornbleet’s “Raw Food Made Easy”. These books have the most easy, basic and simple recipes which are cheap to make and tasty. Goneraw has hundreds of recipes to try, as well, and there are many other websites you can look at for more ideas if you want. Regarding sprouting, all you need is a sprout bag, some seeds, and then the soaking, rinsing and sprouting times for various seeds, beans, nuts, and grains can be found on the web if you have a minute or two to look.

There are a few helpful threads in the forums: cutting cost of raw foods, items to buy online and ideas for busy moms.

  • 123- I am curious to know which acidic foods cause mucus?

  • Wow congrats to you and your family for being so devoted to being raw.. I know it’s not easy! (Hey let’s face it, it’s not easy for adults who really want to be healthy AND know how good it is for us.. so kids going raw is an even bigger accomplishment!) Also congrats to you for the X-Mas baby. I myself have about a month and a half left of my pregnancy (or so they say). An easy and low cost raw meal can be a salad.. there are some really great recipes on here and lots of great recipes for add-ons like cheese or pates and some awesome salad dressing recipes. Also if you can make/buy it fresh fruits and nut butters are always filling for me and something the kids can make themselves. I don’t know what kind of blender you have but if you have a good one you can always throw some veggies into it and blend till slightly warm and have instant soup.. good for times when you’re in a hurry or just don’t feel like spending a lot of time in the kitchen.. Sorry I can’t give you any advice on sprouting cause I don’t really know about it or do it myself.. Good luck to you and your family! K-Mom
