HELP making crackers!!

I have NO dehydrator and had a miserable attempt at making tortillas in an open over today. I wanna make crackers now and until my dehydrator comes in the post (2 weeks as Im in Ireland and they dont sell em anywhere!) is there any other technique? Remember its Ireland, so sun drying is OUT!!!

Thanks! Blessings Ciara

  • Hi This is a hard question! What I’m thinking is if you have a fan and a lamp you could rig it up so the fan blows warm air from the lamp over the crackers. You could line a box with tin foil to reflect the light. If you had a temperature gauge of some sort like a meat thermometer you could see what the temp was.

Also, when I was at camp we used to bake corn bread with the camp fire coals. If you have some coals you could do the same thing with them just keep the crackers far enough away so that it is between 110 degrees and 150. I have a recipe book that uses the technique to cook for two hours at the higher temp of 145 then cook for the rest of the time at appx 115. I think to get the inside warm all the way through and make keep it from fermenting.

I’d be interested in seeing what you come up with. I don’t know how hot a heating pad is but you may be able to try something like that. Don’t they go up to around 120 degrees? You’d just want to have a fan on near by to keep the air moving. If you use a light bulb maybe you could use a mirror to reflect some of the light back as well…

You could also use sterno somehow- it seems to be close to the right temp. The other thing you could do is use an instant coffee maker and turn it on. Put a little rack above the heating element and put something on it to hold the dough like parchment paper. Cover the whole thing with a towel or a box with a few holes poked in it near the top. Use a small desk fan to circulate the air. You’ll have to dehydrate for 12 or 24 hours. Another thing that might work to cover it with would be a wipe clean table cloth that is vinyl.

    good luck!
