Help! What am I doing?

I am unbelievably knew to raw. I have no one in the local area that I can relate with and share ideas of eating, properly. I recently went from omnivore, to vegetarian, to mostly raw in a flip of a switch. I grew up with cooked meals, a lot of “pre prepared” meals, tv dinners and other junk. Slowly as I got older I started eating better; organic, self prepared meals. I stopped eating meat, than dairy and now I’m switching to raw, just so my body is healthy.

But i’m having a problem. I am 6’1” and I started off my May ‘08 at 200 lbs. I then went from omni, to fully vegetarian, to no dairy and eggs, and now mostly raw. I am now at approx 155lbs. I feel like my target goal was 165. I don’t know if being brought up in a world of misguiding foods, and answers are the cause for thinking my target goal was 165lbs, or if thats were I should be.

As of this moment, I am still losing weight. I feel like I am just burning through calories, and not replacing them well enough. Some days I feel lost of energy (until I eat what I’m craving and then feel better). Its been happening more frequently, which I don’t feel is correct. I think a big problem is that I just jumped into this with no major guidance and not being aware of all of my nutrition values of food.I need some help with guiding me towards the right direction. Or am I already on that path?

Thanks so much! J

I’m really new to raw too, although I’ve been vegan for a year and a half. While I’m still learning everything I can, I do know that adding more fats to your diet will increase your calorie intake. Nuts, oils, and avocados are great for this! Also, making a lot of smoothies is really helpful. I find I can “eat” a lot more by drinking something down rather than actually eating it.

HI treeOfLife, one thing i can tell you, eat with youre instinct. When you eat a meal, eat until you satisfy. IN that meal, put a lot of greens, some nuts or avocado. During the day, eat a lot of fruits or smoothies as heyenglish said. If you feel that you lose energy, try to figure what’s youre food combination. Maybe you don’t combine well. Don’t mix nuts with fruits. Green with fruits. But don’t worry about losing weight, you will gain whren you will stabilize. When i am tired or i feel a little hungry during the day or evening, i eat some fruits and i am fine. Try a lot of recipes! Gone raw is there for you! Good luck ;)

I’m 5’5 and I went from 145 before raw (at one point, an athletic 155)...to 120, where I finally leveled off. But this is the weight I am supposed to be for my activity level. If I want to get my muscle back – I will have to work for it. Gorillas eat all fruit and are huge – it’s just working the muscles. If I am not ready to work the muscles yet, then I am not ready to be bigger again. That is just how I see it.

Don’t get worried about what you think you should be. The weight you loss was toxic weight – now you just have to work for it if you want it back. I think you are on the right path, personally. Finding nutritional information about how much of this or that you should eat is hard since most of the info out there is about SAD where they urge you to get your milk, etc. 12papilles makes good points about combination. If you search there are plenty of threads about that. I personally dont follow all the combination rules about mixing different fruits together – a fruit is a fruit to me – but I only have nuts and greens together. There is really no rule though – I eat 80%-85% (sometimes even more) fruit whereas some people eat 50% fruit or less. It’s all up to you.

  • My husband is 6 foot and weighs 143 pounds. He lost approx. 10 lbs after we went raw but has since leveled off. I was concerned with this as he was already super-skinny but now his doctor says he is the ideal healthy weight for his height. So I wouldn’t be too nervous as it’s obviously hard to guess what ones ideal weight is.

Sometimes it can be shocking how fast extra pounds come off, especially if you transition so quickly from the Standard American Diet (SAD), I myself lost 25lbs in just 6 weeks.

I would check the section on detox symptoms too, as your bound to be experiencing some of those as fat stores toxins which release into your blood stream as you burn it off.

  • Thanks everyone for your support. I plan on going 100% raw next week (Detox sunday just for a day, then full force monday; let me know if thats not the way to do it please). It makes me comfortable now knowing that I have a network of people out there than I can turn to. Hope to talk soon!

It is really common to throw off a lot of weight in the beginning, I’ve heard this a lot, and then to slowly start to build your body back up. We’re talking months, not weeks. A lot of raw foodists catch a lot of flak in the beginning because they look like they’re wasting away, but it’s really just the bad stuff moving on out and recircuting through the bloodstream which can cause the fatigue and other detox symptoms. You might find the book Raw Success by Matt Monarch helpful, or even just his blog, since he went raw in his twenties.

yeah, people at my office kept trying to force me to eat stuff and kept saying they were so worried about me when I actually did need to lose weight. I was 5’5” at 155 pounds and then lost twenty pounds and now I feel so good and am still losing slowly. I want to be down about another ten since my build isn’t big but I’m feeling so good it’s not even about weight anyway.

Join a bunch of us going raw for 100 days beginning August 1st. Lots of support similar to goneraw. Sign up before aug 1st at http://raw100.ning.com/

Glad that folks gave you some advice… Most of all, eat whatever you want as long as it’s raw. That’s the best advice i’ve ever gotten, and it’s helped me to stay raw for 5 months and counting!

  • Amysue- that is pretty much what is happening to me. Everyone keeps bring up the fact that i am so “skinny” and I look unhealthy. Where as they are the ones sitting there eating a greasy bacon cheeseburger with fries and washing it down with a coke. Thanks for the support and book reference.

troublesjustabubble:)- I feel the same way, I feel so good and shouldn’t be about my weight. Its just everyone (family, friends, co workers) keep bringing my size up that i can’t help but wonder.

Winona: Thank you so much for the webpage, I signed up. I decided maybe I’m going to start on august 1st, so I can have a good start up date. In the mean time, no junk for me anyways, strictly organic non processed loving. But ill probably go out to eat with my girlfriend to make her happy :)!
