Hmm... What could this be?

Morning_theftMorning_theft Raw Newbie

I know just a week ago I was saying how great the immediate reaction was… But now I feel a bit wonky and was wondering if anyone knows why that would happen… My throat is a little swollen and I have a bit of a headache… That could just be me detoxing a bit or something, I’m not too worried… What bothers me is that I haven’t been able to drink anywhere near as much water as I’m used to, just can’t stomach it, I feel too full and nauseated if I try. That worries me only because of the headaches, I was wondering if dehydration could be a culprit… Also, I seem to have a bit of a urinary tract infection or something… not sure, either way, it doesn’t feel very nice. And I’ve never had those before! Also… I have been overly energised and “buzzed” some days, to the point that I can’t sit down quietly, but I also get very exhausted, muscles feel tired and mild chest pain. I have no idea what that is, but it gets a little scary. Kind of like a “high” that won’t come down. Too much sugar? I don’t know…

Anyone knows? Thank you!!!

    hey there MT

I don’t know your situation, but at first glance I’m wondering if you are moving the toxins out of your body as they’re released? (regular BMs, etc?) dehydration and autotoxicity can both cause nausea…. Myself, the more raw I get, the more I need to move about….esp with fruit….I have to do something with the energy or I’m irritated, wired and can’t sleep. A good walk here and there usually does the trick if I feel it coming on or even just a brisk round the block before I hit the hay.

  • Hi Mt- I would suggest some ginsing or crystalized ginger or ginger tea- they would help you clean out your system. Crystalized ginger is just like dried ginger- it’s kind of like candy. I am not sure if you even drink tea now that you are raw but I’ve heard some people do. Camomile tea is calming if you can drink that. I hope this helps. =)

  • I would definitely drink lots of water. Dehydration can cause you to feel like you have UTI issues, as well as the headache.

Do whatever you need to drink your water: If I find that I can’t stomach water, I’ll drink it warm with lemon and ginger. You can also drink freshly squeezed juices as part of your daily water intake.

I’ll keep a pitcher of this in the fridge when I can over the summer: four quarts water, 1/2 cucumber (sliced into 1/4” discs), sliced orange, sliced lemon, and whatever other fruit you want (pears, peaches, and berries are great). If you give the fruit a squeeze before you drop it in, and let it soak for a day or so, its amazing.

You may get the high feeling if you’re over-eating fruit when your body is actually thirsty.

I second the suggestion to base your diet on greens. I’ve increased my consumption of greens recently (green smoothies, salads) and am feeling incredible.

blujett8, that’s exactly how I feel, just tonnes of energy that I have to expel! I just might be a bit too weak for all the energy I have and my body gets exhausted before the energy runs out. And yeah, I’m not sure if I’m eliminating enough, some days definitely feels like everything stays put… Not sure what to do about that… Tonnes of water don’t seem to work, they just make me feel heavier. writeeternity, I was expecting you to respond, you always do :c) I have been drinking chamomile and sage, I’d definitely get some ginger now. (It’s a shame I only saw this message AFTER I went shopping…) al!- I didn’t know that about UTI, that’s VERY encouraging to hear that. I tried warm lemon water actually and it made me feel better right away, that’s good advice. :c) I actually used to have a diet very based on greens before I went raw, and I was losing so much weight my BMI got to 16.5. I was not too agreeable. Ever since I started eating raw and eating a lot more fruit I’ve been very very happy and loving and energised… And then of course all the stuff I’ve mentioned in the first post… hehe…

Morning_theft- I hope you don’t have a UTI! I agree with al!- dehydration often feels like a UTI, so it sounds like that might be what it is. However, as someone recovering from lifelong chronic UTIs (I still get them on raw, but not nearly as often), I have many suggestions in case you do have one.

First, I’d be wary of crystallized ginger- the crystallized ginger you find in stores is almost always coated in sugar (that’s what the “crystals” are), which can really exacerbate a UTI if you have one. But you can always make your own version- just peel ginger, cut into chunks, dip into agave, honey, or date paste, and dehydrate until softened. It is great to have on hand! We’re all different, so this may not be true for you, but I’ve found that my body reacts very strongly to sugar if I have a UTI- raw honey and agave seem to be ok for me, though. (Just listen to your body- some people will react even to fruit when they have an infection, so honey, agave, or dates may not work for you in this case.)

Cranberries are the best thing you can eat for UTIs, though some people say they are better for prevention than treatment (I’ve found they are effective for both). One of the components of cranberries prevents harmful bacteria from attaching to the wall of the urinary tract. It isn’t necessarily ideal (they may be blanched), but you can buy cranberries frozen year-round at most health food stores. I generally just toss them in a blender with 2-3 parts water, but you could juice them if you preferred. You can dilute this or blend with apples or grapes to cut down the sourness. I drink cranwater several times a day when I have a UTI.

Something new I’ve been trying, too, is apple cider vinegar. When I have a UTI, I take a tablespoon twice a day with lots and lots of water. I sometimes experience a bit of nausea after this, but it passes. This has been very helpful! Last week I was about to give in and go to the doctor for a persistent UTI, and I managed to completely get rid of it using ACV!

If these don’t work, you might try cutting down on fruit temporarily (until the infection passes). The bacteria that cause UTIs live on sugars, so fruit can sometimes exacerbate the problem. (Honestly, I’ve only experienced a noticeable difference when I’ve eaten food with cane sugar in it, but I have read that some people do have problems with fruits when they have UTIs.) You can still use lemons, limes, and cranberries, but if nothing else works, you might try cutting out other fruits for a couple of days and see if that makes a difference. Hopefully it won’t be necessary, though!

As for the spacey feeling, perhaps a little bit of avocado or coconut oil will help even you out? I’ve found that a little bit of fat here and there can really help balance my moods (it will also slow down detox somewhat, if that is a component of what you are experiencing). As Blujett8 suggested, walks are great, too!

    Good luck!

Hey everyone! thanks for your advice! I was actually very worried about this because I have been soooo happy since eating fruit again, I didn’t want this to be a reason to stop having it. I was also feeling like my yeast infections are back and that would DEFINITELY mean no more fruits, I was scared… But it feels now like it’s all gone! I feel great again. I took some Oregano Oil and tried ginger tea, plus made sure to up my water intake again. Worked out wonderfully. Thank you so much!

  • jenny2052jenny2052 Raw Newbie

Yay! Glad you are feeling better.

  • hang in there, morning theft, I’ve been through all those symptoms including thinking I had a UTI..I don’t. My wonkiness lasted nearly 2 months, depends on how toxic you are maybe? In fact, I’m just starting to be able to exercise everyday again without feeling like I was dying.

  • Morning_theftMorning_theft Raw Newbie

I actually started feeling great very soon after. I’m not very toxic as I kicked all the really bad habits almost immediately, I didn’t even dream of the raw diet then, but still really wanted to be cleaner! I had the worst detox when I kicked coffee a while ago. Well, I’m not getting too cocky here… I’m sure it’s going to get bad soon again… But I am only 20 years old and was kicking out a lot of junk food habits over the years (while gaining new ones, like aspartame). Does this make sense? I might be babbling… I love everyone’s help here! You’re all so encouraging and kind!

  • I love everyone’s help, too! I’ve been doing green smoothies for years and have been a fitness freak, thus, thought I wouldn’t be toxic at all..and then I remembered my rock n roll past and how I’ve probably consumed my body weight in drugs : P (that includes prescriptions, which I’m happy to say I take NONE now). So, yeah, the detox sucked for me..but here’s the good after not even two months. Allergies, gone. TMJ pain, gone. Teeth grinding at night, gone. Need for a pillow, gone. that’s right – I can’t sleep with a pillow anymore. Here’s to mucus-free living! That sounds gross, but y’all understand.

  • Morning_theftMorning_theft Raw Newbie

Really? TMJ gone? My husband has that and I might get him interested… How would that work though? Like, how would it help TMJ?

  • I meant pain from TMJ. The dentist tried to convince me to get a night guard because I was in a lot of pain when I tried to eat. Then I went raw and I don’t have the pain anymore.
