Iron

Forgive me if there have been other posts on this subject. What are good sources of iron? I am eating well, high raw but am extremely tired. Not sure if I could be anemic but thought I would look into eating more things with iron. Any suggestions will be very appreciated. Thanks.

Pumpkin seeds are good. Dark, leafy greens contain iron, but they also contain anti-nutrients that block the absorption of iron and calcium. Eating them with vitamin C blocks the antagonist. All vegetable sources of iron are non-heme type of iron, not easily absorbed. Excessive amounts of zinc can cause anemia, the result of a copper deficiency. Zinc megadoses also inhibit calcium absorption if dietary calcium is already low. Similarly, large amounts of iron in the diet can reduce the absorption of zinc.

It’s all about eating a variety of foods to keep the natural inhibitors from causing health problems.

  • This is exactly why I am going raw. I have iron overload and eating raw seems the only way to keep my iron low enough to where I can maybe cut back on blood draws. Fortunately I will never be anemic so this is the perfect diet for me.

  • Chenopodium quinoa is being considered as a new crop for the Controlled Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) because of its high protein values (12-18%) and unique amino acid composition. Lysine, an essential amino acid that is deficient in many grain crops, is found in quinoa approaching Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) standards set for humans. This “new” crop, rich in protein and with desirable proportions of important amino acids, may provide greater versatility in meeting the needs of humans on long-term space missions.

Peaches and beets are also high in iron. I’d sprout some quinoa or amaranth and make into a pizza crust or cracker if I were you. I hope it works – let us know!
