Iron and other mineral and vitamin deficiencies:in a baby: Spirulina?

My baby's just turned 11 months

I started introducing solids, besides brestfeding when my baby was 6 months old, and at forst he liked it, and would even cry if you don't give'em spoon fast enough (ofcourse his first baby foods were bannas, pples, peaches, the usual)

But after 3 weeks of enjoying his purees an juices, he started refusingg foods, and thta's been going on for past 3 months now (he eats mostly 5-10 teaspoons of foods a day!!! whisch is really small daily amounts)

And ofcourse even though milk is baby's primary foods for atleast a year, it's still not enough to fulfill his nutritional needs, ( which blood tests cinfirmed and revealed few months ago: and they revealed not only Iron deficiencies but deficiencies in almost all other mineral and vitamin)

And mu nutricionist are telling me that I have to mae him eat more (more than just 5-10 spoons of food a day, cause it's not nearly enough to fix his nutritional needs), but since I can't make him eat more food (and I've tried and tried, but he never eats more than 5-10 teaspoons a day (even though his purees are really tasty) - so I figured, since he eats really small amounts of food, than atleast those foods hav to be a nutritionally rich as possible (my first though was, superfoods, they're nutrtinally dense) and I heard from a doctor that also spirulina can fix quickly iron deficiency in cildren, but I don't know is it safe to give my 11 month baby sirulina (in her purees)?

So is it safe to give spirulina to baby under 1 year old, an f it is, in what amonunts, if anybody knows?

a doctor thta sirulina can fix quickly iron deficiency in cildren, but I don't know is it safe to give my 11 month baby sirulina (in her purees)

  • I can't answer the safety issue but perhaps your baby will take a little spirulina in his water. My granddaughter takes odd stuff in her water (like charcoal when she was having stomach flu) in a sippy cup.

Then you wouldn't have to stress about getting it in her food.

I would think it would be safe since it is not an allergen. I assume you are breastfeeding maybe the answer lies in you do you take a prenatal supplements etc. I have breastfed two babes at the same time and my youngest even when only having breastmilk never got deficient but I was taking NEwchapter perfect prenatel as well as Floradix iron plus herbs, I think its important to supplement you first b/c then it is filtered on its way to him.

    Good luck

I haven't heard anyone say that spirulina will help with iron. someone told me it doesn't. too much conflicting info out there! If he breastfeeds, can you just eat more iron and he will get it from you? does it work that way?

I think you need to get the help of a naturopath or someone with a degree in this!

This is not the first time I've heard of a baby being diagnosed as nutritionally deficient. My guess is that you've also been told that he's in a low "percentile" for weight, too?

I think part of the problem here is that conventional medicine looks at all the numbers for all the babies and makes decisions about what's normal based on the majority. Well, guess what? Kids are FATTER now than they used to be. Kids are getting too much of certain nutrients from poor diets.

For example, some friends have four children, age 1.5 to teenager. Their youngest son is the same size as their older daughter was when she was the same age ten years ago. But she was considered normal (50th percentile) and the youngest is suddenly in the 25th percentile - meaning three-quarters of babies are heavier. Well, that doesn't mean he's not the normal one! In terms of food, if one kid eats a lot of sugar, it doesn't mean that another kid is sugar-deficient.

So first I wondered if this could possibly be an issue here too. Maybe it totally is not. I think every mom probably knows that there are stages of picky eating and there are stages where they're willing to eat a lot of new foods. And if you are breastfeeding, then I agree that you're the one who should be getting the supplementation.

I also wonder if there are finger foods he can feed himself, like grapes, diced avocado, or soft beans. My friend's 11 month old refuses to be fed, but she'll feed herself or die trying. 11 months is a tough age IMO - not old enough to do things like talk, walk and feed oneself, but old enough to know the feelings of frustration that comes from not being able to do them!
