It must be me! AM I CRAZY?

DreaDrea Raw Master

This forum is great!

Everyone around me is kinda downing me or clowning me because I’m a raw vegan! Personally, I think it’s sexy, but all of my friends seem to have something negative to say. As if eating poison everyday is positive! I feel like im in the twilight zone, “The crazy woman who eats vegetables” episode.

Has anyone else been through this?

  • Ive been through this for years just being Vegan let alone raw..

It is very sexy to me.. and they have NO CLUE how good it feels.. euphoria 24/7 whilst my co-workers pack on the pounds and slug around.. My friends dont really care or say much.. anyone raw in albuquerque wanna be my fwend.. hah!

  • DreaDrea Raw Master

I feel ya(smile)! Me too! It’s amazing how the world is changing! Now, if there is NO chemical in the food, it’s not considered food anymore by the masses, whats up with that!

I even had a relative of mine (NO LIE) tell me that her doctor said that she could not eat vegetables because she was on kidney dialisis. What?

  • heyenglishheyenglish Raw Newbie

My parents try to be supportive, and my mum will try pretty much anything I make, but they both like to crack jokes all the time at my expense, mostly because of my love affair with my Blendtec Blender. And, a lot of people I know just keep trying to tell me that humans were designed to eat meat and cooked foods, and that I’m denying my body of important vitamins and stuff. Clearly, they are the ones denying their selves proper nutrition!

Oh well, I keep spreading the word to all my coworkers and friends about how great green smoothies are, and I’ve actually gotten a few people telling me they’re gonna try making one! It feels great adding awesome nutrition to the lives of others!

  • I just tell them that I am allergic to bread, meat and cr*p:) They say: Oh, poor you!, and I think: Oh, poor them!:) I had some surgeries which lead me to this lifestyle, but the funny thing is that right after the surgery the hospital nutritionist ordered me a roasted beef sandwich!!!! Even after I told her that I have been vegetarian for years… she told me that this is the reason that I got sick – because my meat intake was low:-)))) People should stop looking at our plates and pay attention to the food choices they are making… But instead of getting mad, I bless them with love and pray for them to discover the truth: that raw food is the way to happiness! It is funny how we are being “forgiven” for the food choices we make if there is a medical reason or doctor’s orders. So, keep telling them you are allergic until you meet somebody who salutes, approves and admires your decision to live raw!

  • DreaDrea Raw Master

Truly inspirational words planetorganic! Being allergic, THATS A GOOD ONE (SMILE)! and that nutritionist surley is’nt about nutrition!

heyenglish, thats funny because the same people that tell you that you are loosing something by eating meat, eat at Mcdonals or some other dead food place! What are they loosing (or gaining) by eating junk food!

It’s almost like…You tell someone you are raw vegan, and because they dont want to seem stupid in their own choices they tell you, “oh, your loosing nutrients”, right after they put that potatoe chip or candy in there mouths!

Basically, the inside of their cars and holmes look better than the inside of their bodies, go figure.

dreasraw – Doctors recomend not eating raw for a lot of circumstances, the best I know is people with stomachal issues, they have been adviced to eat eveything well cooked, to avoid fibre and whole foods!!

  • angie207angie207 Raw Master

Yeah, you’re crazy. Just kidding! :D I love when people think I am deprived and I just think about how fortunate I am to be able to eat fresh pineapple, & berry pies, & raw lasagna, amazing salads & crackers & yummy shakes, etc. and how they are eating spaghetti and cake, and mine tastes soooo much better – they have to have more chemicals because the “food” doesn’t taste like anything ;) – why in the world would I feel deprived?! I have studied a lot about nutrition & what nutrients are in what foods, etc., and if/when people say I’m missing nutrition, I sometimes ask them what nutrients they think I am not getting from my diet, and they usually don’t know even what half of the vitamins & minerals ARE. I think it’s normal for people to question and even fight against what they are used to (i.e. food guide pyramid). I had someone tell me once that he was worried about me because he thought I was missing some things in my diet, “like starch, from potatoes.” This from a guy who drank huge “energy drinks” every day. Good things he gives himself such balanced nutrition – maybe I should learn from him? :) heehee

  • DreaDrea Raw Master

Definetly anngoingraw, But even cooked (and I am not against those who cook for whatever reason they need to) But shouldnt natural foods be involved on all levels, in some capacity?

  • DreaDrea Raw Master

Thanks angie im going to use this one…

“when people say I’m missing nutrition, I sometimes ask them what nutrients they think I am not getting from my diet, and they usually don’t know even what half of the vitamins & minerals ARE.”

I don’t even tell people that I am raw vegan unless I know them well enough. At my job they must wonder why they only see me eating fruit (and sometimes salad). I have been asked before at work but as I mentioned in another thread I just said “I eat healthy” – because that is what I do. I’m not a “raw vegan” (even though I am lol) – that makes it sound like a phase or a fad or a diet. Even to good friends I never use the raw vegan term – even if I have to avoid it by saying “I only eat raw foods”. Sometimes I don’t even want to deal w/ people saying all the stuff about “you’re not getting this/that”. Too “funny” what you guys posted coming out of the mouths of these “experts”. I want to get a health evaluation from a anti-raw doctor and lie about my diet and THEN tell them I am all raw and see what they say.

  • thecavsmanthecavsman Raw Newbie

Oh yeah – I also think some of the reason I don’t say much to people is a guy thing. Everyone just assumes that your girlfriend is running your life (if they know you have a serious girlfriend, like my coworkers know I do) when you are a health conscious guy. I was out with a coworker and stopped at a raw place – and while I was eating my pizza he said “You need a new girlfriend, man”. There is a stigma with health conscious guys where people assume they didn’t do it on their own. Anyone else get that?

  • DreaDrea Raw Master

You said it thecavsman! We are in a society where eating poor is the norm, so how can we expect any “health profesional” to teach/tell us otherwise!

I’ve never heard someone say that eating whole foods made them feel bad, but I see my friends being diagnosed all the time with some kinda problems.

Not to mention, I’ve seen plenty of doctors smoking, eating junk food, even doing some kind of drugs. I think we should all trust our bodies and mother earth, not some guy who was taught how to administer drugs and do surgery!

Dont get me wrong, doctors are not useless, but self responsiblity need to be a factor also!

  • thecavsmanthecavsman Raw Newbie

dreasraw – I agree about the doctors. Professionals are only professionals because they make money at what they do – even in the health sector. If they healed you, they wouldn’t get you coming back over and over again. Not that doctor’s necessarily MEAN to have you hooked to them – but they do it none-the-less. They are the doctor, the one in control of YOUR body – and you are supposed to just listen to them.

And about how whole foods never make people feel “bad” – in fact, they do. Notice how people are always allergic to apples, nuts, grass – WHOLE things, from nature. No one is ever allergic to potato chips, chicken, or gummy worms. So when someone is cutting the grass, they claim that the grass is making them sick because their nose is running and they are sneezing. Then some doctor will prescribe a drug that dulls those symptoms, not realizing that the grass was DETOXING them! They only react to the grass because they already have toxins. But ask your friends and grass is the problem.

  • DreaDrea Raw Master

Good point thecavsman! I didnt think about it like that at all! I especially like the gummy worms part(smile)!

Why do yal think it’s hard to explain this to someone? I have family members that really need a change for the better.I try to tell them all diseases are eatin or ingested in some kind of way and the body can heal itself, yes, but, it needs help and junk foods not helping!

  • heyenglishheyenglish Raw Newbie

It’s hard to explain all these benefits to someone because for the most part, we aren’t taught to question things and think for ourselves anymore. We’re supposed to just stick to what’s the “norm” because it’s been that way for years.

Another reason is that people are afraid of change. They are so addicted to all that junk that when they look at us eating healthy, tasty whole foods, they think we’re depriving ourselves. I know that for a fact, because I used to be a huge sugar junkie! I thought life wasn’t worth living if I couldn’t indulge in a cupcake (even a vegan one) every now and then. But, since going raw, all my “allergies” and addictions have disappeared, almost over night!

I think a lot of people also feel like you have to make the leap into raw all at once. That works for some people, but not everyone. The best advice I can give for helping your family is to stop telling them how good raw food, and actually show them! Start them off by making small changes like eating fresh fruit or veggies whenever they want to snack. Or prepare a raw dessert to replace a cooked one, and serve raw salad as the side to cooked meat or whatever. It’s not ideal, but they’ll be making healthier choices!

  • bittbitt Raw Newbie

Yeah I have one friend who REALLY teases me about it. So far I have stayed away from her in eating situations. But some people are nice about it. Especially when I tell them the reasons why I am doing it (for my health).

  • elizabethhelizabethh Raw Newbie

I’ve been very lucky to have friends that have only teased me lightly about it in the beginning, but are actually quite supportive now. It always helps to visit a vegan/raw restaurant and get immersed on the atmopshere!

  • You are not alone! I believe that deep down most poeple I know think I am “crazy”. Few days ago I had a colleague tell me “you are strange” just because I told her that I was detoxing from mercury. People have “NO CLUE” (doctors included). By the way this colleague looks everything but healthy!

  • DreaDrea Raw Master

That’s funny melaverde! It’s crazy because people are so aware of the pollution in the atmosphere, chemicals in food, prescription drugs etc. But when you say I’m detoxing they think that’s strange, hilarious!

Question? Has anybody inspired someone to become vegan yet?

elizabeth have your supportive friends actually tried it yet?

  • bittbitt Raw Newbie

Hmm. I have inspired people to become vegetarian, but I don’t think vegan. But some of them have faded out of my life, so as far as I know, they might be! I am just happy if people cut down on animal products, because that helps the earth and the animals too.

  • I haven’t inspired anyone to go vegan or raw ftm, but my sister is completely changing her diet and becoming more and more health concious…maybe one day she will decide to give it a try

  • DreaDrea Raw Master

Well I am hoping that all of this collective effort will inspire the masses!

Whats up with almonds being mandatorily pasterized now? I just signed an online petition against this!

  • carrie6292carrie6292 Raw Newbie

Tell me about it! I am so tired of having to explain my lifestyle to people. I actually started this because i AM allergic to everything, but now it’s taken on a whole different reason as to why i eat this way :) I’m trying to get my friend to go raw with me – she has Lupus really bad and she’s been on a vegan diet but hasn’t helped her much. I really think this will help her – i have to search the message boards for Lupus info… But, i’m always telling people about this way of life – i hate calling it a diet because then they quiz me and ask “are you ALLOWED to have…” it drives me crazy :) I love eating raw and that’s all that matters!!!

  • DreaDrea Raw Master

Well carrie6292… my mom is vegan and does mostly juices and herbs (cooks every once in a while) and cured herself of athritis and my aunt (her sister) of diabetes. So I think your right, if vegan isnt helping, Raw is optimal, I think that would help your friend with the Lupus alot.Meditation is also very good for illness, alot of people take that for granted.

  • elizabethhelizabethh Raw Newbie

dreasraw, actually yes. i don’t mean to brag, this was caused less by my personal persuasiveness and more by the effects of the way of eating perceived by other people, but my whole family has become mostly vegetarian, whole family is eating more raw and drinking green smoothies, had a few friends go vegetarian (certainly only partially as a result of my influence), and one friend even went fully raw vegan.

i’ve found i’ve influenced people most when i haven’t tried to influence them, if you know what i mean.

  • I totally understand! I am being teased by some “oh, you eat grass now”. Then I have relatives treat me like I am a fanatic. I really think they purposely crack open a soda and order a burger and fries because I ordered a salad and water. Then act like I’m the one with an issue. All I know is, my severe fatigue is 90% gone! I finally lost the extra weight around my middle and I have energy!! My mom joined me and she feels much better also. She even gave up coffee….that was a big addiction. She doesn’t regret anything and neither do I. I do have a question..does it make you mad when the grandparents offer your kids stuff you don’t want them to have? Like hotdogs, sweets..etc?

  • troublesjustabubbletroublesjustabubble Raw Newbie

elizabethh! You’re so right about influence. At first when I mentioned to people I’m raw they look at me weird but when they saw what it did for me and how wonderful I felt they all decided they wanted to try it. Already two of my sisters are at least doing vegan and a couple of my friends are part time raw(a week or two per month).

It’s really amazing how it has effected the people around me. My husband says I started a fad with our friends but I’m hoping it’ll be more!

  • A word about doctors: why do you think they call it PRACTICING medicine??? heh heh

You will find any positive life change will bring followers, naysayers and even those accusing you of being a heretic. I’ve had people warn other people that we only eat sticks and berries… then I invite them to play in my kitchen, and the magic begins….

  • DreaDrea Raw Master

I like the statement “A word about doctors: why do you think they call it PRACTICING medicine???”

Hopefully, I will become as influencial as some of you, I will use you guys as my inspiration!

elizabethh, Im going to try to use that tactic of not trying. Although I dont push it down peoples throats, but when they come at me with facts about how eating cr*p is better than eating veggies, it winds up being a debate (friendly of course).

tamilda, those are the statements i get as well. But its better to eat grass, than chemicals!

  • angie207angie207 Raw Master

My mom is slowly eating more healthy (& even some raw) foods as a result of being around me, hearing me talk about nutrition, etc. and she is super supportive (even corrects me if I eat “off”) because she sees how different I feel with raw versus even healthy cooked foods way of eating. She is not going to give up meat, but she now makes a raw salad dressing and asks me to make her a raw pie once in a while. She hates to cook, so more prep. doing raw meals isn’t likely to stick for her, but I can make her something once in a while. I’m just glad she got used to eating the yummy dressing & knows it’s a good thing for her to continue, BEFORE she realized it is costing her $10 a pint for salad dressing! I told her it isn’t $10 for salad dressing; it is $10 for better health. She agreed with me once I put it that way. :) I like to share the joy and flavors of raw foods with people, rather than to tell them they are poisoning their brains with chemicals – they can figure out if they feel better or not ;)
