juice made us sick, what is wrong?

Hi I am new to juicing and raw. we made this recipe, brocolli, 3 onions and a few cloves of garlic and some tomatoes went down the juicer. we drank it and it burned our stomach and my husband threw up. Does anyone know what I did wrong with this recipe?

  • I'm not a big juicer, but I think I would have gotten sick too. Brocolli, cabbage and that family do not do well for me as juices. (Personally, I wouldn't juice an onion either. But, that's just me.)

Try tomatoe, celery, and carrot. See how that settles. I tried juicing cabbage once and almost had to leave work latter in the day because I was soooo sick to my stomach.

I'm a much more cautious juicer now. Nothing spicy or savory.

That doesn't sound like a really good juice mix, I think that I would have gotten sick too. I would try combining some fruits and vegetables together, like carrots, apples & pineapple. Or you can make smoothies with fruits, like strawberries and bananas and add some spinach. You can't even taste the spinach, but you are still getting your greens.

  • Oh dear no if you are new to juicing then you really need to start off with much different juice to that one. I have been a massive fan of juicing for years and still can only juice garlic once in a while with only 1 clove and NOT with onion. Apple and carrot is the best way to start, use that as a base and add smaller amounts of other stuff like greens. Orange a carrot is another good one as is orange and beets yummie and such a great colour.

I really reccommend Jason Vale books for jucing there is loads of good advice in them.

I hope you have a better experiance next time.

  • thank all y'all for the feedback. yes the garlic and onion were just too strong for our stomachs. i will juice carefully hencforth. my jack lalanne and vitamix books both say juice greens and onions in small proportions to the fruits. keep in touch! i will share my experiences as we go along, and will be reading others here! :)

  • Ever notice how the smell of onions BURN your eyes even if your standing in the room? That is a SURE sign that we are not suppose to be consuming onions. Ever notice when you eat onions your body SMELLS like onions (also known as "body odor" which I have not had in the last 8 months, no deoderant, no soap in the shower, minimal showering) That is because your body is detoxing the onions out of your body the quickest largest way possible- your skin

Garlic is an anti-fungal anti-viral anti biotic anti bacterial. That is a great thing right? Nope. I will break down one out of the four antis that I wrote about garlic. Anti-biotic. Anti meaning oposite. Biotic meaning life. Opposite-LIfe aka death. Antibiotics don't discriminate on what they kill they just kill life. Same goes with bacteria, vira,l fungal. - Ever notice when you eat garlic you stink like garlic? Whether or not it's your breath, or even body odor? Yup you guessed it, your body is detoxing it my love.

When I first went raw, I remember believing if it is raw and it is vegan,it is good for you. This is extremely not true. What about raw poison ivy? Is that good for you? You are embarking on a journey, and a beautiful one it will be. Just educate yourself as much as possible and you will be fine. By educating yourself, you will be able to spread the word more properly and understand everything you possibly can to help others join you.

  • i think this must be true. why else would we have felt weak and my husband vomit? i will read that link. this is new to me. thank you!

  • There are a lot of wonderful juice recipes as well as books on the subject. It is a good idea to read a couple of them before starting. Steve Meyerowitz (The Juice Man) & Cherie Calbom (The Juice Lady) have excellent books on the subject. One of my favorite juice recipes is: 3 heads of Romaine lettuce, 2 stalks of celery, 5 Granny apples, 1/2 lemon (don't juice the rind) and thumb size ginger. This is delicious for breakfast and makes enough for a couple of days. Of course, proper storage is essential to maintain the nutrients. Carrots & pears or apples are also yummy combos. Enjoy the Journey!

I'm glad someone mentioned celery - also consider cucumbers. Very juicy and refreshing. Most juicers won't do well with the peels because they are often waxed, so you may need to peel them first.

A clove of garlic adds a kick but I'd only use a little. Ginger and turmeric ditto. I don't buy into the anti-onion/garlic stuff, but I've never had problems so I have no idea.

  • brocolli, 3 onions and a few cloves of garlic and some tomatoes??? No wonder you got sick.

if you want that onion tomato broccoli and garlic cloves mince it up and make a salad. lol I don't even thing I would be able to stomach that.

Start out with something like kale, lemon, grapefruit ginger juice. lol (just a tiny bit of ginger or it will be spicy)

    good luck!

  • i love garlic and onion personally.

they have never given me B.O

I eat chopped onion & garlic clove in my salad everyday. I never smell like onion or garlic except for my hands. the oil from garlic sticks to my fingers from mincing it even with washing my hands...which I LOVE because it's my favorite smell in the world lol

& I really like cabbage myself. especially red cabbage. i dont like drinking vegetable juice alone. cabbage mixed with carrot and apple...soooooo good :D

With all due respect, I think people who regularly eat onions and garlic don't realize how offensive the smell is. My boyfriend eats garlic sometimes with his lunch or dinner, NOT realizing it (because he ordered out). I smell it on him immediately and even after he brushes, flosses, and rinses.

Garlic and onion, in my opinion, also make women's secretions stink (along with animal products also doing this or anything acidic).

ick. i think it is the combination of the onions and the garlic. I would definatly try doing something with a big more fruit. My personal favorite is carrot-apple-cucumber :)

  • I guess some people just do not like garlic & onion. Personally, My body doesn't have the same reaction.

  • Af far as "offensive odors" and "stinky secretions" go, I believe it is a bit like beauty being in the eyes of the beholder. What smells offensive to some, doesn't always smell that way to others.

I too notice the smell coming out of my pores if I have garlic or onions (and, not to be gross, bodily secretions). I'm not a big onion or garlic person. In fact, I use them less and less.

But, the scent doesn't bother me on other people. I notice it a little, but don't find it offensive. It might be a personal thing?
