Just wondering why is everyone a raw vegan?

kuritekurite Raw Newbie

Hey just wondering what the reasons you have for being vegan? Is it health or animal cruelty or something else?

thanks

  • I am vegan for moral reasons. Raw for health reasons. I have been raw long enough now that eating cooked anything really messes up my system. I love raw, it has saved my life and can't imagine eating any other way!

    health + philosophical + moral reasons :)

  • I dont believe in supporting a flawed system (the modern "farming" system) so I am mostly vegan--and raw for health reasons. However, my friends raise chickens (freerange, organic, and the like) so I'll have a raw egg yolk once in a while to keep my B12 up, as I believe supplements are mainly for undoing past damage.

  • I am a raw vegan for all of the 3 reasons: animal rights, health, and the health of the environment.

ethics. their health comes before mine, and it will always be like that. environmental reasons come next, and then comes health.

  • It makes me feel amazing!

and also because I know I could live to be 150 on the raw vegan diet. :)

I feel so much better physically & psychologically. Also, it helps give me more energy for my runs.

There's no such thing as a health vegan, since veganism is a lifestyle, NOT A DIET, that expands to yoru clothing choices, personal-care items, and household cleaners even.

so obviously I'm vegan for ethical reasons.

Some people eat a plant-based diet for health reasons. This is not veganism.

Hey, Lyn, do you have any way of measuring that there is B12 in the eggs? Have you seen what she feeds the chickens? Most chickens are SUPPLEMENTED (which you say you are against) B12 in their feed since it's not in the soil anymore. Also, it's my understanding that it's better absorbed sublingually as a supplement. How long have you been ovo-veg? Have you ever had your levels checked (when and what diet), etc? Just curious. If you don't want to answer here, I understand!

By the way, Kurite, I'm vegan for ethical reasons but raw for environmental and health reasons. The killer energy is great. I had awesome energy as a cooked & raw food vegan but this is even better. :)

  • kellyannekellyanne Raw Newbie

vegan for ethics. great health was a pleasant side effect.

  • Hey, superfood2. I dont know exactly what she feeds her chickens, but I know she makes it herself. And I'm not AGAINST supplementation, per se, just think its better to get your necessary nutrients from food--unless, like I said, you are undoing past damage. I've been ovo-veg for about 4 months now and raw for one. I'm interested in whatever imformation you have to offer! I'm flexible with my views as long as there's enough (relative depending on topic) logic behind what I'm being told!

As far as me personally and supplements--I frankly dont think there's THAT much damage to undo as I have been fed an mostly organic, perhaps 30%raw, low-meat/dairy diet my entire life; and now that I'm 15 I'm taking it to the next level. Who knows, though? Mabey I could find a couple supplements out there that would be useful to me!

  • Oh, and I havent had my levels checked--as because of my age I dont have as much choice in ordering routine procedures.

also I think the biological diet of humans is similar to that of chimpanzees, high fruit, greens, and raw plants intake, which are very alkaline, while meat and dairy (even raw) are acidic. The ancient paleolithic thing for meat being our biological diet is not a crazy idea, there is a lot of confusion about that I think. The thing is that I feel like I have more mucus if I add meat into my diet. It makes me feel full in a very uncomfortable, bloated way, even just a few tiny sample size pieces. It also fogs up my brain. Fruit feels cleaner, and more generally promoting sense of well being. As far as minute quantities of meat, I think that if minimal amounts are included in the diet then one wouldn't do any worse without any of it at all. I guess it all depends on what you feel is the most cleansing, rejuvenating, longevity-promoting way to go. and killer energy ain't a bad thing either :)

PS lyn you might benefit from a strong probiotic and digestive enzyme. these two are top notch for cleansing. I tend to take probiotics as my daily regiment because fruit that isn't freshly-picked loses a lot of probiotics that are living in/on it. But I agree in general food is the best source of nutrients.

Lyn, I'm not knocking your choice to not be vegan! You have to do what's best for you. But I wonder about the safety of relying upon eggs for B12 when you don't know if the eggs even have it, and if you can absorb it if they do. I think it's a safe(r) bet to take a sublingual B12. But that's just me. I wouldn't eat eggs regardless because I don't use animals.

Good for you for your choices and upbringing! That's pretty cool. :)

  • Thanks, superfoods2. I'll look into the B12 content--because if they didnt contain it I probably wouldnt eat them anyway.

  • superfood2superfood2 Raw Newbie

It's a strange thing because it's hard to tell with eggs - every chicken was fed something different and had different conditions, stressors (or not)......

  • Dont they also have the teeth and claws for it?

  • kuritekurite Raw Newbie

Hey Lyn just so you know although chimpanzees are pretty much fruitarian they actually do eat meat, although its a very small portion of their diet they eat it whenever they can get it. Also grass-fed eggs contain much more naturally occuring b12, if you want to read an article about them here it is.

  • And how do we know any animal products we eat have b12 if the soil has been depleted? Mabey we need to supplement because we messed up the earth so much. Obviously this is just specualtion as I haven t studied b12 in depth. Some more information would be appreciated, thanks!

  • kuritekurite Raw Newbie

Im not sure about the claws but chimps have larger k9 teeth and other differences and although it may be for meat some people believe that they actually use it to fight other chimps for mates.

B12 isnt created by plants, its created from friendly bacteria, and when chickens eat high fiber diets from grass they have more of these beneficial bacteria in there body and naturally have more b12 eggs

  • Thanks! I heard mushrooms exposed to sunlight directly after they've been picked produce b12. Is there any truth to that? Also, If it's produced by friendly bacteria, wouldnt our own intestinal flora do the trick?

  • superfood2superfood2 Raw Newbie

I wonder where the B12 amounts were checked, though. When you go to the store, you have a container which says a number (let's assume it's accurate). When you get it from a friend, they may have been fed "great" or "healthy" grass or maybe not. Maybe their particular chickens are deficient.

I know I can get B12 without harming or exploiting animals, so it's moot for me. I'm just engaging!!!

  • superfood2superfood2 Raw Newbie

I think part of the reason why we don't produce it or enough of it is our antiseptic present-day conditions. Or so I was told.

  • Sperfood2, where do you get your b12 without animals? Where do the supplement get it? Thanks!

  • superfood2superfood2 Raw Newbie

I recommend anyone, even omnivores, getting B12 from a sublingual source, as it's shown to be best absorbed, and when people have deficiencies, it's usually an absorpability issue, NOT a consumption/supplementation issue.

  • superfood2superfood2 Raw Newbie

Yeah, we're missing out on our feces. :p :)

  • kuritekurite Raw Newbie

sorry about not responding, anyway yes our intestinal flora do produce it in our appendix. Theres actually enough there to last us a life time. Some articles i read actually said that because humans use to not be so hygenic some of there bowel movement would end up on there hands and back in the food which actually would provide them with b12. Another article said that because some dirt on the ground would get in our food the bacteria from there would also have created b12 that you consume. And no the antiseptic comment is very debatable, but for all of the vegans out there, they have plenty beneficial microbes due to all the high fiber foods.
