Menopause? curious

I just read an article discussing the pros & cons of medicating "the discomforts of menopause". Which made me stop & think. Does a raw and/or vegan diet ameliorate these "discomforts"?

I'm menopausal, and I have no "discomforts" whatsoever. I've been mostly vegetarian for most of my adult life, mostly raw vegan for most of the last seven years (I'll occasionally eat bits & bites of meat, dairy, gross chemical concoctions, etc. , in social situations to make people happy) I also have a rabidly carnivorous S.O - he thinks Taco Bell is raw vegan because it's not a steak - he can't quite wrap his head around the vegan, much less raw, concept. So some days, I indulge him with a few bites, and some days I just don't eat at all, it seems like such a pain to deal with everyone's dietary habits. But I eat mostly vegan, and mostly raw for the last seven years, though I do go off occasionally.

BUT - here's my question - for any of you who are menopausal, are you having any "discomfort"??? I'm 1 1/2 years since my last period (I'm not quite 50), and have not had ANY discomfort, not one hot flash, nothing. My period just stopped, after slowing down for about a year, and that's it. No other symptoms of any kind.

My younger sister has been vegetarian since she was 7, tho she's heavily into dairy & junk food - she's overweight & she's been complaining of hot flashes for two years. My friends who're going through menopause complain about hot flashes & vaginal dryness. I only know one other menopausal woman who's mostly vegan, (she's not raw, and she eats meat very occasionally), but she's had the same experience. as me.

No hot flashes, no dryness,. no discomfort whatsoever.

So... I'm VERY curious about the experiences of any raw and/or vegan menopausal women out there - are you having "discomforts of menopause"? What's your experience?

Thanks...

Wow, although I'm no help (yet) on this one I sure hope it gos as well as you say. Everyone I know (and they are not raw) has been pretty miserable. Yes, let this be the one where we all have a similar experience!!!

  • I'm 52.

The only menopausal discomfort I have is occasional insomnia, which was much worse during perimenopause. I also do have dryness but it isn't painful.

No hot flashes, mood disorders, nothing, although when I was menstruating I never had cramps or discomfort then.

I was vegetarian for many years before switching to raw a year ago. I don't know whether my lack of menopausal symptoms is due to diet, but it wouldn't surprise me if it did play a part.

  • I"ve been mostly vegetarian my whole life but wasn't raw when I went through menopause. I never had any major symptoms other than occasional hot flashes that never really bothered me much and were actually very convenient during the winter. I still can't figure out why everyone makes such a big deal out of a hot flash. All my overweight carnivorous friends complain of horrible symptoms. I think diet and how your body has been nourished throughout your life is a big factor.

  • hi, i remember reading that in fact periods diminish but in fact may not be complete menopause when having high vit c in diet. some say raw does similar but can only quote vit c from leslie kenton raw energy bible. if i find the reference, i will let you know.

I started menopause when 56. I was vegetarian (only ate yogurt) at the time. I had to take natural progesterone cream twice a day. I am now 66 post men. Have been vegan raw for almost 5 years. I still have to take the pro. cream 3 times a week but only once a day and 1/2 the amount. I also use a natural cream for dryness. If I try to back off from the Progesterone cream I get horrid headaches and nervous problems. Which were my same problems during menopause.

So being raw vegan has helped but not 100%.

Personally, I wouldn't says it's because someone is vegan that they don't have symptoms, because not all of us eat the same foods. While I am not saying that diet has nothing to do with symptoms, I've seen vegans with wonderful eating habits, and vegans who eat crap all day. I think it's important what the person is actually eating and, of course, that individual's body.

At any rate, my diet is raw vegan, and I still have horrendous hot flashes, the worst of anyone I know of. But that could be because of physical problems I have, not the diet. I am hoping it clears up, though, because this just plains sucks.

  • when i worked in health food shop, we sold sage capsules for that. if there's anything else I can remember that helps, i will post it Tomsmom. sorry you are suffering, that's awful for you.....
