Nasty stuff in throat

WARNING: Dont read any further if you are easily grossed out. TMI alert!

For the last 2 weeks, I have been having this nasty taste/smell in the back of my throat. Today I coughed some hard white stuff that was apparently the “stuff” stuck in my throat. It smelled like death. Is this candida overgrowth? I am so scared and worried that this “stuff” can be thriving inside of me. I had not been eating as good as I used too because I am in between jobs and have not been able to afford eating raw. Has anyone had this before? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    I can sympathise.

I have had candida in my mouth & 1st identified it by the taste/smell(in my mouth if that makes sense) & (gross alert) if I stuck my finger in the back of my tongue/throat, it was not very nice. I happened to be at the doctors for something else & mentioned it, she took a look & said “oh yes, you’ve got thrush” Nice! At least I knew! I got lozenges and that was that. But that was over a year ago now.

But, I have also noticed that there’s some kind of coating, sludgy stuff in the back of my throat. I dont have the smell, coating on tongue so I dont think its that anymore & have occasionally coughed up the hard stuff you’re talking about, but again, not for a while, but I dont think that means that its not there.

I thought cutting out dairy entirely, which I have done for months now, would stop but am not convinced. I then thought that it might be my digestive tract which might clear up with raw, and it is better, but I dont know. The only sugar I have now is that which naturally occurs, fruit, dates etc & agave. I think that helps.

Can you see a white-ish coating on your tongue? If you get a spoon & scrape it in the morning see if it has that smell, thats how I keep on track occasionally. Also, how long have you been raw & have you cut out sugar entirley?

Sorry, just re-read ’ I had not been eating as good as I used too because I am in between jobs and have not been able to afford eating raw.’

What kind of things have you been eating instead? I can totally understand the expense issue, have been at that inbetween jobs place too.

Here I am again recommending grapefruit seed extract (GSE) to others, especially when they have yeast/candida/thrush problems. To date, I don’t know a single person with this condition, regardless of severity, who hasn’t knocked it out with GSE (10-15 drops in liquid taken orally 2-3 times daily until resolved).

Here is a GSE link I found the other day advising that GSE is excellent for yeast/candida overgrowth.

When I was in graduate school, one of my female classmates told me she had to go to the ob/gyn monthly to be checked for yeast overgrowth. She, and her husband, had been taking prescription meds regularly for over a year. I told her about GSE and she purchased some that day. She said in a week it went away and they both continue to use it regularly. That was 7 years ago and I spoke with her last week and she told me they still uses it and have never relapsed (despite their SAD sugar-enriched diet).

  • Thank you clr-1976! I think it is very similar to what you had. I am building my way to a stable raw diet but before I was in my financial dilemma, I was raw off and on about 80% of the time for about 3 months. I did successfuly cut out sugar but have since went back eating it again (cravings returned too). I realized that I had this same stuff in my throat about 2 years ago before I went vegan. Lately I have found myself eating dairy and foods containing corn syrup again. I have found that most foods carried in the cheaper supermarkets all contain some form of dairy or corn syrup and its almost impossible to avoid on a budget. Hopefully I can go 100% raw soon!

  • Thanks Meditating! Its funny because I’ve been wanting to try grape seed extract for a facial mask recipe I saw posted on here! I will have to see where I can some and give it a try.

is that what that stuff is??? I used to get those things as a kid…. haven’t had them in years, but now that i think about it, I used to be on antibiotics a lot before my teen years… always got strep throat (about 30 times) and have all of these holes in my tonsils from the scarring. Those gross little things always got stuck in the holes, or lodged under my tonsils. They really do smell bad! I always thought they were hardened bits of pus. gross!

  • Chicory- I had the same problem a 4-5 years ago and actually ended up having my tonsils removed and have only had 1 sore throat since. I think it is actually food/plaque build up that gets stuck back there.. SO so annoying. I am not an advocate of unnecessary surgery but.. I was getting strep and laryngitis every 2 months and now I rarely get sick..

RahDiggsh- There are a number of candida support forums/threads on here you might find useful

    http://goneraw.com/forums/3/topics/5745

seems to be the only one I can find right now..

Anyway, I have had a little success with doing a cleanse and then upping my intake of garlic, acidophilus, oil of oregano and GSE.. I don’t know of a cheap source of GSE but it is pretty amazing. Going vegan is def when my candida problems started.. If you are eating dairy maybe try and get items with live cultures? Wheat also triggers candida for me which is so impossible to avoid when on a budget. Maybe if you tried doing a cleanse you could use your food budget on some supplements? I really wish you luck, I think more people than you know have been in your very same predicament. <3>

Oh! It also took me forever to find a store that actually carried GSE.. You may want to try online!

thanks loorin… luckily i stopped getting strep.. I worked in an elementary school for 3 years and that was the last time I ever really got colds, flu, etc. Think i built up an immunity to it!

  • Thank you guys. I looked at some pictures of candida overgrowth online and I am not sure it is the same thing I have. I don’t have a white tounge or any visible white stuff on my throat. I only see the stuff when I cough it up. It may be stuck on the back of my tonsils.

When I had this stuff a few years back, a natural medicine specialist recommended Pau D’Arco tea. I started drinking it again and have since been coughing up that stuff pretty well. My throat feels a little cleaner and I dont have that nasty taste in the back of my throat anymore so hopefully its gone for now. I will do a cleanse just to be on the safe side.

I found something about them….. here is a link to some pictures.. pretty gross, so just a warning! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonsilloliths

  • Thanks chicory! I am so embarrased but that looks exactly like what I have. I recently got my braces removed and have been wearing this invisiline retainer almost 24/7 since my last check up about 3 weeks ago. I brush the retainer daily but I dont think thats good enough to get it clean. This may be where the bacteria forms.

And to think of it, the last time I had this, I was also in a retainer (I stopped wearing it and needed braces again). .

now that I think of it…. i used to get these a lot when I had braces too! I think being strep free for so long, those holes in my tonsils have closed up quite a bit, so the food doesn’t get stuck back in there. I’ll bet sea salt gargles before bed help quite a bit though

  • clr-1976clr-1976 Raw Newbie

Wow! I think thats it too! Well done chicory!

I def dont have the white coating on tongue anymore, which is the candida I think, but can still occasionally taste stuff in the back of throat, which wont budge & I cant swallow – same stuff?

Does that still mean Grapefruit Seed Extract though?

    I found this med students thread when googling ‘Tonsilliliths’, thought some of it was quite funny (2nd post) & informative;

    Fate?

I know we dont know about the GSE yet but, just walked past my local Neals Yard at lunch and they were having a clearance sale.. Had Viridian GSE at 70% off! Still in date for 2 yrs, so I figured…!

    Shall I take it anyway?

Meditating can you help? I’ve done a bit of research and it can be used as a natural anti-parasite remedy too (something which I wanted to do anyway as a ‘just-in-case’).

Its in 400mg capsules, not tincture – anyone know?

    Thanks!

  • Hey Guyses.. Yuck.. That was exactly what I was dealing with too! When I had really bad sore throats I found gargling with cayenne pepper and oil of oregano really really REALLY helped.. I know oil of oregano is an antifungal.. Perhaps it might combat the tonsilliliths too? I found myself always shoving q-tips down my throat to remove them.. bleh!

clr-1976 – If you have had problems with candida I can’t imagine taking the GSE would hurt much.. Esp given your reasons for wanting to take it. I was only ever able to find tablets, myself and feel they did seem to help at least a bit!

  • I used to have those too and never knowing what they were I would just pick them out and be grossed out. I was vegan, didn’t have braces or retainers at the time, but ended up getting my tonsils removed because they were so large and prone to infection that I actually had hemorrhaging tonsilitis! It was awful, but no more sore throats now. Good luck with yours rahdiggsh

  • Hi Rahdiggsh! I don’t think it’s candida that you’re experiencing. I agree with Loorin. I think it’s plaque/food trapped in the crevices of the throat. I didn’t start having this problem until after having strep throat twice, which really caused a lot of tissue disfiguration in my throat. And yes it does smell like garbage. I just make sure that I brush my tongue and gargle everyday and I don’t have this prolem anymore. It usually only happens if I eat nuts and don’t remember to brush my teeth at night. Then I have to get a popsicle stick and carefully release the trapped food from my tonsils. You’re not the only one who has experienced this. Actually, I had a friend that also did.

  • clr-1976clr-1976 Raw Newbie

How do you guys manage to remove them? I looked last night and I cant even see my tonsils! There was mucus-y stuff at the back of my throat this morning though.

With regards to the GSE – it says 1-3 tablets with meals, (so 3x a day) so I figured why not knock anything nasty on the head with the course of the bottle. Think thats ok?

    That’ll be 1200mg 3x a day

  • Thanks guys! I got my tonsils removed when I was 8 but I know I still get these. Thanks to the link clr-1976 posted, I learned that these things grow on the lingual tonsils in the back of the tounge which I still have. So mines arent as big as most but they are still just as awful.

clr-1976—I get rid of mine by dry coughing. I just open my mouth and hold a piece of tissue up to catch it. I think drinking tea before I do it helps to loosen it up.

I havent had any nasty taste in my throat since the day I coughed them up and have since been soaking my retainer in denture cleaner 2X/day. I just cant bear having those things again. They are soooo disgusting!
