Need Help going to Next Level

thecavsmanthecavsman Raw Newbie

Ok so reading things here and there have inspired me to move to the “next level”. I have been raw vegan since April and have finally found my niche. I feel the best when I eat a pretty much fruitarian diet where greens, etc don’t play a big part. I always knew I should add greens, but all that happens is that I have less and less greens as I go along. About a week ago, I also stopped eating nuts and overt fats, bringing my calorie percentage from fat way down. I feel better than ever before now, but I am also starting to worry about the things I can’t yet feel – not getting enough minerals, etc.

So just add exclusively green lunches and/or dinners, right? That would be fine, but I have also recently started reading about hybridization and I realize I have way too much banana and pineapple, which do not have seeds. My daily banana intake is creeping up steadily. I have also heard that dates and carrots (I love carrot juice) have way too much “undigestible protein” (I think Dr Jubbs advocates using less undigestible protein). I thought my love of fruits was OK when it was natural, but now that I realize how much fruits have changed, I realize how much MORE important it is to not eat so much fruit, and to eat fruit that isn’t as tampered with as bananas and pineapples.

Is there anyone here who avoids hybrid fruit or has switched to a diet with less fruit, etc that has any advice for me. Does anyone think I am overreacting about this sweetened, hybrid, and often seedless fruit?

I love being a raw vegan over the last 4 months – I have felt better than I ever have and have gotten off several medications – I can’t even list all the changes I have experienced. I just need help getting off of high fruit that is continuously claiming a large part of my diet.

  • I was just reading last night (I forget who, but a well respected figure in the 811 world) not to worry about hybridization in fruits. He had said he was always so caught up on them and then he started getting deeper and deeper into the subject and realized all fruits are a hybrid. I would have to do some more research on that topic, so don’t quote me cavs.

Greens are fantastic for you, but they have a very low calorie count. I was doing a lot of fruits, even more greens, and some nuts and I was losing weight like crazy. I looked into it and I was totally not getting enough calories for my activity level. I’m not saying greens are bad, because they are absolutely fantastic for our bodies, it’s just they don’t have the large punch of calories that fruit does.

Just so you know, I’ve only been researching these topics for a short amount of time, so use my information more of a guideline to help you research more yourself. I wish you luck man!

    Love Life J

    Thanks treeoflife

I am the same way – just trying to find my way through all of this. Just being raw was exciting for long enough, but now I want to move on to make sure that I have everything I need. I hear the same thing about eating fruit no matter what type because fruit is so good for you. But then of course there is the conflicting advice about hybrids, etc. I wouldn’t be worried if I had one banana a day, but I am up to like 3-5 daily.

I now keep my caloric averages to make sure that I meet them (like you, I wanted to know if I was OK in that department) and calories are no problem eating all the fruit that I eat – I get an average of 1750 or so calories since July 31 – my at rest BMR is 1450 or so and I want 1.5 miles daily, sometimes more, with not much exercise but a WHOLE lot of work to do. So it seems about right. The days where I have some greens are the ones where I only eat 1500 or so calories.

I guess my issue is hybrid fruit. I can’t lie – what I read from some long time fruitarians in an old thread on this site got to my head, too. I also read things from a trusted herbalist that got me into raw veganism about how hybrids are nutrient difficient. I just didn’t want to turn this into a banana or no banana fight, though. I want to know if anyone has experience in lowering hybrid fruit or fruit in general. As soon as I learned it wasn’t natural, I had to take a look @ the fruit I eat.

  • I eat A LOT of bananas. I would probably say I eat anywhere from 1 bunch to 2 bunches of bananas. I guess that is anywhere from 5-10. I feel like that’s what my body craves, so that’s what I will give it. I’m starting to dive deep into 811, I just brushed the surface. I feel like that will be the best diet for me. I need to find out more about hybrids, i’ve just recently skimmed that topic.

I would have to say, I wish I lived in south america, in the jungles. Imagine all of the unbelievable foods just growing in the wild! MMMMMMmmmMmmm… one day I will have to live down there. I’m drooling just thinking about it!

Edit: Like I had mentioned, I read that hybrids aren’t that bad (it might have been Rodger Haskes). Then again, I’ve also read that we need meat to sustain ourselves.(which definately was not Rodger Haskes)

CAVSMAN I substitute Plantains for bananas. I don’t know how much they have been hybridized but certainly not as much as the conventional bananas. They do have seeds and they are not as sweet. The texture is also not as creamy, but that is the way the fruit is suppose to be. You can quickly adjust to them, or least I did.

Goji is another option. I suspect they haven’t been mainstream like other fruits long enough to be hybridized and they aren’t that sweet. You can get them raw and dried at low temperatures. You can also grow your own and can do so in a large container.

If you have a patio and can grow a container plant, you could try Agro-Towers. I bought them and am preparing to grow small quantities of greens for the fall; however, they were invented for the strawberry industry. I stacked five units and screwed the bottom into a wooden plant stand on wheel and then dropped a PVC pipe down the middle to help keep them stacked. They work great. Although I started too late this year, next spring I am going to fill mine with heirloom strawberries. Can’t wait. It is wonderful to know exactly how your food was grown and fed.

I think the secret to growing anything worthwhile is to get non-hybridized heirloom seeds. These seeds are usually 50+ years old and have been protected from hybridization by their caretakers. Everything I planted this year was heirloom.

yeah I was getting into 811, too. This month, I have been on a lose 811 and looking back @ my log, I do the best and have the most regular bodily functions when I have a string of truly 80-10-10 to 90-5-5 days. That is when the body odor ceases to exist and I feel the best. So the fact that nuts are out the door has been established. This month has worked wonders for me – practicing staying away from Larabars and such, even if I felt a craving. I no longer have those cravings, which saves money, too :-). Now that I am all fruit and trying to add greens, I want to sort out which fruits are good and which aren’t after reading about hybrids.

Plantains! I thought they were off limits. Will def give that a try.

Dried goji is expensive and tastes funny to me, but I supposed I could throw it in something for the supposedly amazing effect of goji berries (though probably overrated).

I wish I had a deck, or a yard, or even a functional windowsill lol

    Thanks a lot meditating

  • well be sure to let me know what you find out. I’m very interested. In the mean time… www.scroogle.org here I come!

Scroogle is a search engine invented by an original google inventor who was upset how they were tracking every little thing you searched. So by retalliating he made his own site. One where it does not log anything about your searches or your computer. (Sorry about getting off topic of this thread. Thought it would be good for you rebellions out there)

CAVSMAN I don’t know if there is some reason people aren’t eating plantains. If there is, I haven’t heard of it. I switched to plantains because they have seeds and you can tell right away they don’t have as much sugar. I enjoy fruit too but am aware it is much sweeter due to human intervention and I want to watch my blood glucose.

I don’t care much for the taste of dried goji either. However, I always soak mine in the fridge in re-mineralized distilled water and they taste much different. Then I just throw them in a smoothie or eat them straight up. I rarely eat them dried. I have read that the cardboard tasting goji was dried at high temperatures. I bought some (I think from Raw Guru) and they were much better.

  • Yes, I myself thought goji’s tasted funny. That was untill I got them from else where and my body got so happy. I loved the way they taste. I don’t know if it was because these guys where raw (others one I got before I was 100% and were only labeled organic, not raw though) or if it was because my body was telling me to eat these suckers.
