new in NYC

Hi there. I’m very new to raw, as in, I haven’t exactly started yet, but I am seriously considering going a percentage raw. I guess my life has been heading that direction…

I used to be on the SAD (Standard American Diet – ick!) until a year ago when I realized it was just not good for my body. I started eating healthy & exercising and lost over 40 lbs. Now I make most of my own food and try to stay away from processed stuff as much as I can.

Lately I’ve also been getting into more organic/natural things as much as I can, i.e., I eat more fruits & veggies, stopped taking BC pills, wash my hair less often. We got rid of our car to move to NYC earlier this year, which I love, but even little things like getting a cloth bag for buying groceries I think helps the earth.

Anyway I think my main struggle is going to be that my husband probably doesn’t know a thing about raw… don’t know for sure what he will think of this, but he certainly appreciated the other efforts I’ve made in my life recently, so we’ll see!

Hey organikation, I was in your place a year ago, knew NOTHING, family knew nothing, and it’s been so interesting learning about this lifestyle and all of the possibilities. Everyone’s journey is very different, you’ll see it all here, but there’s lots of support on this site, no matter what choices you make. We’re all learning and there’s new information every day. You have some great resources in NYC (so I’ve heard), from raw restaurants, to libraries and bookstores with raw books, potlucks, no doubt, farmer’s markets. Hope you finds lots of help here!

Glad you joined! NYC is a GREAT place to be raw. Check out this list of restaurants: http://rawfoodrestaurantguide.com/

You’d be suprised to find how much your husband will enjoy raw foods. Take him out to the raw restaurants, so he appreciates how delicious the food can be. Once you keep appetizing fruit around, even the most SAD folks can’t help but eat a sweet peach or a ripe watermelon.

  • Thanks, Winona. I just requested the list from that link.

  • amysue & Winona, thanks for the warm welcome!

amysue—fortunately my husband loves to eat healthy stuff like fruits, nuts, & veggies and he & I both avoid eating out, especially fast food; unfortunately, he also likes a lot of meat, bread, & pasta, and he loves for me to cook it for him because I’m better at it, ha!

Winona, the restaurant resources are awesome & very helpful – THANK YOU! I’m going to try some of them out sometime, as I’ve only ever been to & ordered out from one vegan restaurant here (The V Spot in Brooklyn – love it!)

You’re very welcome! I’m in upstate New York, but I DREAM about making it to the city just to spend 48 hours at all the raw restaurants. You’re lucky to have access to unusual exotic fruits at some asian markets. live it up!

Your husband’s interest in healthy eating should make it very easy. My very non-raw husband eats two raw meals a day, except when we eat out, so we have a compromise, that he will happily eat the raw food as long as I don’t give him a hard time about what he eats when we go out. Forced raw is a very bad idea, at least for us!

  • HIIIII! I live in NYC too! Want to meet up sometime and hang out in the farmers market or something??

  • Sweet Pea, that would be awesome! It would be helpful to have someone to try out some new raw stuff with, as I’m just getting into it. I also just don’t know too many people here in NYC yet. In what neighborhood do you live? I’m in Morningside Heights, just north of Columbia U.

  • I live in Murray Hill. I go to School near Union Square so I get to hang out in the farmers market all the time.
