New to Raw Diet/Struggling a Little

I have mainly been vegetarian my whole life, and changed to vegan about six months ago. A few weeks ago, I decided it made sense to go all the way to raw. I did really well for the first week. It was really easy. Then, my hormones acted up, and I was craving sugar. Since then, I can’t seem to get all the way back to raw. I do pretty well during the day, but for some reason at dinner time, I feel like something more hearty. Any ideas?

Wow, Ima sugarholic to! Recipes that I found on this site helped alot…Cheesecake, bannana ice cream and crepes, and oatmeal cookies. But here is the secret add xtra agave or honey or whatever to it, making it a little to sweet kinda solved my sugar problem. I hope this helps.

I like Chris Carlton’s advice, or maybe it was Zoe’s, when you go raw to not worry about sugar or fat, as long as they’re raw. This is really helping me, as I’ve recently gone 100% after a year of 80-90%. Your cravings will likely take a long time to calm down so you can try just going with it right now and not worrying if you’re 100%. For most people that’s a process. It’s a huge change for your body, that much I’ve learned. For a lot of people a dehydrator helps with the dinnertime cravings – like making one of the bread recipes here that feels a bit heavier, or just warming up some veggies with olive oil in the dehydrator as pianissima suggests. In all of the polls taken here about the challenges raw foodists face, one of the biggest is dinnertime so you are not alone.

  • Thank you for your help. I think I’ll try one of the recipes you suggested.

I have to say that it’s nice to get a response to my posting. I tried posting on a different site a few days ago, looking for this same kind of help, and got nothing. I think I’m going to like this site.

    fresh mangoes!

  • Make sure you are drinking/eating some bitter greens… they’ll make fruit taste even sweeter and help soothe that cravings for sugar. Although I do believe that eating something you really, really want is good for your soul. Eating well shouldn’t feel like punishment! I’m really into lettuce leaf wraps and crepes; there’s something about “making” food a little at a time that just feels more filling and satisfying. Amysue’s idea for warming veggies is awesome too. Yum!

wow sugarbeet, ima try that too thanks!

  • when i first began transitioning to raw, i had one raw chocolate milkshake/smoothie a day! i put as much cacao and agave in it as i wanted, even though those things aren’t usually 100% raw. it helped my cravings so much… even my non-raw friends always say my raw vegan chocolate milkshakes taste better than the real thing! i hardly ever crave them now, and have just naturally replaced them with green smoothies. just go easy with the transitioning and i agree with what others have said about don’t worry about fat or condiments that aren’t 100%. and if you slip up or decide to cheat with cooked, just try to make it a conscious decision and then don’t beat yourself up about it! :)

plus, raw-til-dinner is not a bad way to begin transitioning! if you do that, you’re still eating better than at least 90% of the US!

One little thing about all the really good and yummy raw sweets they will put weight on. I love raw desserts and have gained 32 lbs by eating them. SOOOOOOOOOOOOO beware! I agree with angie mangoes or other fruit. After all it is the season for getting fresh raw fruit.

you gained weight with raw dessert!? I didn’t know that was possible. I never crave any sweets since I eat fruit regularly.

i eat my fair share of raw dessert but i find i am much better able to moderate myself eating it because it does not contain cane sugar. that stuff does me in. it takes me about 2 weeks to detox off sugar and stop craving it.

hearty: try some of the recipes on here. we like the dancing chicken salad for heartiness!

I just get the worst headaches with sugar. It’s so easy not to indulge when you know the next to days will be spent in a hazy, miserable hell.

I can imagine gaining weight on avocados though. ha. Is it the nuts and stuff that make you gain weight? Or the sweetners?

I’ve heard that green smoothies have really helped people to get rid of sugar cravings. The blended greens with the sweet fruit helps nip it in the bud :) You could always make some raw ice creams also (get the book vice creams or look up the recipes on this site, great ideas!) :)

I love a lot of weight eating avocados, nuts, and seeds when I started eating raw foods…I made sure that I soaked the nuts and seeds overnight then rinsed them very well. Sometimes I would dehydrate them afterwards at a low temp and freeze for future use, other times I just ate them within a few days. Apparently the ratio of fat to protein swaps from 70/30 to 30/70 once soaked…I didn’t eat truck loads of them, but I did eat them every day. Our bodies are all different though, so what worked for me might be different for others???
