New to raw -- hello!

Hi everyone,

I'm brand new to eating raw. I've been vegetarian for 10 years, and vegan for 2 years. I've been following a raw diet for three days now. I've been reading a lot online, and also picked up Ani Phyo's book from the library.

Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself - I'm Dani and I'm from NJ. Anyone else also live in NJ? Lately I have been visiting my local Farmers Market for produce & ordering nuts from Nutsonline.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on where I can buy raw foods like crackers and/or breads? I bought some really yummy crackers from Whole Foods, but they were $9 for a small bag. :(

I also bought some B12 vegan spray online, so I'm looking forward to getting that soon. Tips for eating out? Order big salads? Do you bring your own dressing with you?

I'm sure I'll be posting a lot on the forums asking for advice & suggestions!

Welcome! There is a great recent thread with tone of online stores for raw goodies. I wish we could make it "sticky" because this is a popular question.

yeah for some reason they charge tons for these types of things! you can order stuff online for a bit cheaper but if you do it for awhile it's a lot cheaper to make your own crackers. you need a dehydrator to make crackers but for other things like granola, etc you can do it without a dehydrator.

as for eating out, depends on where you go. salad works at some places. you can ask for vinegar and oil on the side or a wedge of lemon. i've brought dressing and avocado with me, yes. but i also don't eat out a lot because i prefer my own food.

Bitt, don't forget to tell her to get the Excalibur dehydrator.

Eating out is one big problem with raw vegan. We eat at a salad bar or our Health Food Store. Which is only once or twice a month. Summer time I like to make our meals at home and have a sort of car pick nick when in town or traveling..

After 5+ years of being raw vegan I am starting to get nervous about eating at the salad bars. First the food isn't organic and sometimes the cut up salad could be sprayed with a chemical to keep it fresh.

It seems like we can always do better.

  • danivance...hi there and welcome. I'm also in NJ and a newbie to the raw lifestyle. I'm by Clark/Rahway area. I haven't been to any raw food restaurants in NJ or NYC yet but will be trying very soon!!

What farmer's market do you shop at? I go to Times Farmer's Market but it's not really a farmers market...more like a bootleg LOL...lots of selection but no organics and majority of items are shipped in from chile, peru, etc...I do go to Trader Joe's in Westfield, Wegmans in Woodbrideg has quite a nice selection of organics...and the newly remodeled WF that was in milburn and is now in Vauxhall is awesome but so pricey!! I get my organic baby spinach and organic mixed greens from Sam's in Linden they are cheapest I have found.

Have not done the raw crackers, breads and various delights. I have purchased a few "new" items from online and experimenting with them....raw is an adventure to say the least!! I am not 100% but getting there slowly but surely. Great thing about this site is all the members are absolutely fantastic. Majority are very informative, willing to share, kind and encouraging. You couldn't find a nicer group of people.

Anyway...best of luck with your transition!! From all I've heard, read and seen RAW is definitely the way to go!!

    Peace & abundance

    Lo~
