Newbie to Board and Raw

Hello,

I am very new and have a few questions…I am an ethical and health Vegan for 4 months….I live in a cold area…is the raw lifestyle possible for the New England, New York or Jersey area? Just wondering…Thank You! Mags

Hey maggiephoto, you might want to check out the discussion called “When Raw Becomes Dogma” in the Being Raw section which was started by a member in a cold winter area. It’s definitely possible depending on the resources around you and your budget. There’s some great forums on how to get started on this site, which food items people find they use the most often, but it’s definitely a learning process to find what foods fit your lifestyle and how you’re feeling. I live in Massachusetts and I find everything I need at my health food store and local organic farm but I occasionally order things online too. Good luck!

Yes! It certainly is possible. I live in upstate new york, and I’m 99% raw. I choose to eat entirely local in summer/fall (supporting a coop), and to eat some local in winter. For example, most root vegetables are edible. Lettuce is grown locally around here. I don’t eat entirely local in winter/early spring – I purchase imported fruits and vegetables. And I’m satisfied that my efforts to support local farmers is sufficient that I don’t feel bad eating imported fruits at other times. I can eat very very nice raw food spending between 60 and 100 dollars per week. Other folks can spend less on food. It’s all about buying what’s cheap, and it’s entirely possible to do raw on a low budget too. I’m glad you joined! • Hi, I also live in upstate New York. I’ve been mostly raw for two weeks. My goal is to be 100% raw and make this a permanent lifestyle change. We do have a health food store in my city that I have been able to buy most items from. I am planning on starting my own garden this summer which I am so excited about. I am going to try and contact local farmers through the Farmer’s Market in the city and see if I can buy bulk from them. I am finding this to be a bit expensive since many items are not in seaon, and I am the only one in my house eating raw. I am looking for any good sites that might sell raw nuts since I am finding those to be the most expensive. I’m really happy and excited to have found this site as I have not talked to anyone yet who also eats raw.
