thats too scary! i went and posted a comment (you can download a sample letter at
http://cornucopia.org/index.php/protect-fresh-l…). i’ve also spread the word by posting this on a number of facebook groups and emailing people, and i encourage everyone to do the same!

I personally feel helpless. It seems that with other government actions, the general public is limited in stopping unwanted changes. With this said, I think it’s likely that our greens are in jeopardy. It seems that the long-term solution is to buy locally and begin your own garden (indoors and out). Sprouting seems like the best solution, supplemented by a summer outdoor garden (I can’t grow outdoors in Winter). Another option is to move outside of the U.S. where fresh/raw fruit and veg are still available to the public. It’s depressing.

I thought food was required to be labeled as irradiated… if it were irradiated. But, I searched for one website that says that pasteurization c/would include irradiation… and found: http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/cidrap/content/fs/irr…

Disturbing. Reminds me of Codex Alimentarius and the December 2009 “deadline”.

    This is awful. What next?!

what the hell is goin on??!

I just finished submitting my vehement objection. Thank you for the heads up. I will do everything in my power to contact my reps tomorrow. I’m hoping the #’s are in the phone book although e-mail would be easier.

If it wasn’t already given, please provide this link to your circle of influence with your urging to take action!

We were too late for the almonds, let’s try for our greens! Today, Monday, is the last day!

  • RCBAliveRCBAlive Raw Newbie

Please, please, please take action before it is too late!

  • Morning_theftMorning_theft Raw Newbie

From my understanding it was just a rumor and is not going to happen.

  • spiritedmamaspiritedmama Raw Newbie

According to the government website, it is NOT a rumor, in fact it is going up for decision today.

  • RCBAliveRCBAlive Raw Newbie

Morning, please go to the link provided in my post. You can get all the information and find out what actions you can take. There is also an online petition, which is virtually painless. Please take action before it’s too late!

  • Morning_theftMorning_theft Raw Newbie

Hey, don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to say I don’t want to support… I would love it to be a rumor.

  • RCBAliveRCBAlive Raw Newbie

If you think this is a rumor, please go to: www.regulations.gov. In the middle of the screen, you will see “Search Documents.”

    • In Step 1, choose “Documents with an open comments period”
    • In Step 2, choose “Agriculture Marketing Service”
    • In Step 3, choose “PROPOSED RULES”
    • In Step 4, choose “Docket ID” and then type in “AMS-FV-07-0090”

This is from the federal government! People thought the almond regulation was a rumor as well. Let’s not make the same mistake with greens.

It doesn’t actually state that they would be irradiating or pasteurizing.

  • germin8germin8 Raw Master

You are right. It doesn’t say anything abour irradiation/pasteurization. Just that there would be a program to reduce the risk of “pathogenic contamination during the production and handling of leafy greens”.

They don’t say HOW they will reduce the risk… but pasteurization could be used… or pesticides, but they already use those – right? I assume they could use other methods… but what would those be?

And since, one day, “pasteurization” could also mean “irradiation” according to this – click here - then that would classify the food as not living/raw. Of course, if a veggie is tagged with “pasteurized”, I would think it’s irradiated; afterall, heat-pasteurized veggies wouldn’t make it through the heat and still be sold in the produce section.

“Handlers could voluntarily enter the agreement”. So who are the “handlers”? It doesn’t sound mandatory… how does this affect food labels… will we still be able to identify raw, organic, living from raw, irradiated food at the grocery store!

Does anyone have a good article/link/book on the effects of irradiation on food… (besides that its enzymes are denatured)?

  • Morning they didnt actually state that they were going to “pasteurize” raw almonds with Rocket Fuel either!! But just the fact that they are about to tamper with Raw Greens (or any raw produce) needs for us to stand up and be heard!!

As usual the gov’t points the finger at Plant-based foods when E-coli is a pathagen from a mammalian source.

    Knowledge is Power!

  • deborahanndeborahann Raw Newbie

Germin8-Rainbow Green Live Food Cuisine has a blurb about it. He only touches on the subject, though, nothing really in-depth. Check it out starting on 96

  • germin8germin8 Raw Master

Thanks deborahann. I have that book and read it. Irradiation destroys between 20-80% of the vitamins… and studies show it has caused increased incidence of tumors in animals… and there’s even more bad news.

  • Jesus!! I HATE THE GOVERNMENT! A bunch of old money grubbing heartless people.

I assume that irradation has simular consequences.

It’s sad to think that the FDA really could go ahead and pass that bill with little opposition. However, they have only what power we give them and I think this scare is actually a good thing. There’s a purpose to everything and maybe this will give us all more resolve to grow our own foods, and help others do the same.

  • ambiguousambiguous Raw Newbie

In case anyone is still reading, what looks like the text of the plan is here: http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/acrobat/lettsup.pdf
I haven’t read the whole thing, but it looks like it’s about keeping clean and avoiding contamination on the fields.

  • Certainly do post comments to the USDA. However, ultimately, we may all have to grow our own food. In addition to sprouting, I’m about to begin with hydroponics. After some research, I ordered an Emily’s garden hydro system a few days ago.
