PETITION AGAINST ALMOND PASTEURIZATION

Hi Everybody,

I’m usually on a different raw board, but I wanted to get this out to as many raw foodists as possible. All almonds are going to be pasteurized come fall of 2007. Furthermore, the Almond Board and the FDA are going to label these pasteurized almonds as “raw.” Please see below:

In the interests of raw foodists having a stronger voice, I’m putting up this this super-easy petition. Copy & paste the body of it (below, modify it if you wish) to an email, sign your name, and email it to MOVIEMAKERR@YAHOO.COM. Please inform everybody you know who might be interested. I’ll send the collected emails to the Almond Board, and the California Senators & Representatives at the beginning of August.

In reference to the move to pasteurize almonds:

All food processed at a temperature above 118 degrees is no longer raw. To label a pasteurized food as raw is deceptive to consumers. This issue affects the human right to have access to pure, unprocessed food, and more importantly affects our freedom of choice. We will therefore be forced to cease buying your product. Please reconsider: Sell almonds that are NOT pasteurized, and that are properly labelled as such, for the sake of health and freedom of information so that we as consumers can make informed choices.

Most sincerely, (sign your name, city/state/province/country)

Thanks for your support, best wishes & stay raw, Robbie Kenyon

  • Would it be ‘illegal’ to have a private almond grower sell his own almonds that are unpasteurized and labeled as such? Is this the third reich or a ‘free’ country?

I thought that the almond board: www.almondboard.com was saying a different story, I thought they said that it is not mandartory but voluntary and unpasteurized almonds will be labeled as unpasteurized? I’ll have to re-read to be sure. Should this be true…where’s the freedom in this? A free country but not being allowed to decide about something as small as NUTS? If you don’t want raw, then don’t buy raw… good grief!

Let me rephrase that last sentence…for people that are paranoid about foods and insist on eating cooked and pasteurized, then they should not buy raw, BUT for those of us that DO want almonds in their natural state, we should have that option and not be lied to.

Rawmama we all agree but not the almond board. My e-mail that I sent and there response is in the almond will be pasteurized forum. From all that I have read on other discussion forms most people are saying that they will not eat any more almonds once the change is implemented which would be the best idea. I believe spreading the word to everyone to let them know will help greatly. The more people involved the better the outcome. There is power in numbers.

I agree Joesc…will continue spreading the word. What other nuts and seeds will be forced into this pasteurization :(

At the Green Festival in Chicago this weekend, we had a good response passing out flyers we created about the raw almond pasteurization issue. We (the Chicago Raw Food Community) are trying to do a fax/email/telephone “blitz” on Monday April 31st. I posted the flyer up on the Chicago Raw Food Meetup. It has information about the blitz and a link to an online petition you can sign.

Please feel free to copy it and hand it out if you have events going on. Or if you anyone here belongs to any of the other Raw Meetups in other states in the US, please post the information on your boards. We are trying to spread the word out as much as we can!

Here is the link to the flyer file. Anyone should be able to download it. http://rawfood.meetup.com/222/files/
