Raising a raw child. question.

Hello.

My sister-in-law has a 6 month old baby girl.

She drinks only breast milk but a couple weeks ago they started giving her water down avocado, banana, and organic brown rice cereal.

My sister in law wants to raise her baby very healthy with lots of raw foods. Anyways we were talking last night & she was wondering if it would be ok to give her baby some fresh juice. We figured we would need to add some water to the mixture, and not tons of fruit because thats a lot of sugar. But anyways, do you guys know of any good and safe juice mixtures to start her out with?

Thanks for your help. :]

  • I'll try not to beat a dead horse since you did mention not wanting to over due the fruit juice because of the sugar- but I just wanted to mention this because my pediatrician pointed it out to me when my daughter was very little. And it's to go very light on the juice. She (my pediatrician) had mentioned how many of her patients parents would load them way up on apple juice and such- and they would fill up on that instead of other food.

Obvious, your sister-in-law isn't doing that though.

My daughter took to pears very easily. I've never actually juiced a pear myself. But, I remember several of the grandma types mentioning that pears were usually very well tolerated. They don't seem overy sweet to me, so maybe that would help with not wanting to over sugar the child.

I wonder if you could slip a veggie in with the juice? Maybe that would be a bit tough on the tummy at that age though?

Six months is generally regarded as safe to start fruit and vegetable juices. I like this company

    http://www.firstjuice.com/

It's packaged/pasteurized but there is some good general info. They use carrots (orange or purple) with fruit.

nothing about that juice makes it good for children- it has been pasteurized! that's pure marketing sucking you in. in my humble opinion, your sister should be drinking the fresh juices because babys get their nutrients through milk.

i would definiltey wait for the baby to reach for whole fresh ripe fruits. juices are not whole foods, aren't natural, and therefore probably aren't the best thing to give to a baby.

  • zinfendel. What I was talking about is juicing actual fruits and vegetables at home for my niece. Not a huge amount but a little. Like

    an ounce of water

a ounce of fresh pear juice

and a ounce of like....kale juice.

My sister in law would never buy pre-made juice for her baby.

&Suasoria. Thanks for that website. It will help give me good ideas on what kind of mixtures of fresh produce we can introduce to my niece. :)

Megan - y'welcome. That was indeed the reason I posted it, because it has some good ideas/info you could adapt for your own purposes - not to push the product itself. Sorry if that wasn't clear, Zin.

I started giving my daughter small amounts of green smoothie at around 6 1/2 months, watered down of course....but she loved it and there was no adverse effefcts. I think working in some greens is always a good idea.
