Raw Beauty

Hey gals (and guys?) There’s heaps of fun things for beauty that are natural. Lets just tell each other some of the great things that have worked for us.

One of my favorite things to do…is every day when I brush my teeth, I also brush my lips. This keeps them so, so smooth by exfoilating dead skin off. My lips are very soft. At first, this made my lips tingle, but now, they’re used to it.

I love smoothing honey onto my face. It makes my skin feel so soft and smooth, more moist. I even put it on my lips for a balm sometimes.

So what about you guys? What are some of the fun, little things that you do?

I no longer use facewash! I just use water. The skin on my face was getting smoother and prettier so I slowly stopped using it and now it’s amazing. I’m trying to start getting away from moisturizers too but am not quite there yet.

Is coconut oil a good moisturizer for the face?

  • Coconut Oil, ACV and baking soda are my favorite natural beauty products. I use Coconut oil for everything from skin “lotion”, hair shine enhancer, itchy scalp.. lots of stuff. If I put it on my face.. I let it soak in a little bit, and then gently wipe the excess off. It is fantastic!

I use ACV as a toner for my face, and to clean my hair. And Baking soda can be used as a facial scrub once a week… nothing else is needed.

Oh.. and I don’t have to do these things all the time, because with raw the skin naturally regulates, but sometimes I need a little help. :)

What do people use instead of toothpaste? I’m using a “natural” one at the moment, but it really doesn’t seem to be doing much for me.

As for my skin, I dry brush from head to toe everyday, and then shower in very hot, then very cold water. It’s crazy how smooth and pretty my skin is getting!

  • RawSarah~ How do you put coconut oil on your hair so that it looks healthy-shiny rather than “oh, she needs to wash her greasy hair” look? lol, I would like to try that.

Coconut oil is a great moisturizer for the face!!! I like to use it as an eye cream or lip balm. I’ll often mix a bit of cold-pressed, organic coconut oil with liquid vitamin E, and a drop or two of olive oil and use that as a cream. It’s also GREAT for mysterious rashes…they’ll just dissapear.

  • troublesjustabubbletroublesjustabubble Raw Newbie

Yes! I was hoping coconut oil was good. I really hate using moisturizers since they’re so freaking full of chemicals. I’m going to get some oil as soon as I can.

sky-where do you get liquid vitamin E? That sounds like an amazing cream!

  • Troublesjustabubble:)~ I got it at health food store…in the beauty section. Some people used vit. E to heal scars too, or tummy stretches in pregnancy (altho’ apricot kernel oil is good for that too).

  • I use baking soda to exfoliate my face and neck. Smooth skin and no pimples or black heads! WHoo-hoo!

I also use the soak water from my flax seeds for a hair product. acts like a cross between gel and mousse. more like gel, though. It is a great moisturizer for skin, too.

Getting a suntan is a great beauty booster. I like putting essential oils on my scalp and on perfume spots (mint, lavendar, orange oil). Oil pulling also whitens teeth (notice how naturally white teeth aren’t white enough anymore? Now everyone’s got blue-white bleached teeth and my naturally white ones look yellow by contrast!).

  • I brush my teeth with baking soda. It gently cleans and whitens my teeth and it’s about as inexpensive as it gets for tooth and gum care.

  • heyenglishheyenglish Raw Newbie

monica – do you mix the baking soda with water first, or do just put some powder on your toothbrush? I feel silly for asking, but I don’t have a clue, lol!

No poo is the best thing I have ever done for my hair. Yep, no shampoo or commerical conditioners. Sometimes I use a sea salt wash if my hair seems extra oily but usually I just do water rising.

I used some coconut oil in my area areas of hair and skin.

Sometimes I do an extra conditioning with either tons of coconut oil, avocado straight or a mixuture of bananna and coconut milk. Works great!

I don’t use any soap on my body except my pits and when I shave. Nothing on my face.

Coconut oil or MSM lotion on my face.

Recently I have discovered that shea butter works really well to get rid of dry spots better than coconut oil. I had a little eczema spot near my hair line and it is getting rid of it. It also got in my hair and is making my hair really soft in that area. I thought it would be hard to get out since it was so heavy and I don’t use shampoo but it comes out really nice but leaves my hair soft!

I use either coconut oil or hemp oil stick on my lips.

I was using salt to brush my teeth but I slipped back to a natural tube toothpaste. I should get started on the baking soda/salt again.

I just use water to brush my teeth, and brush really throughly. Seems to work well.

I use water to wash my skin and hair too.

Guess I’m REALLY all natural, heh.

  • I use Talulah products (the vegan ones) on my face, www.talulahskincare.com, baking soda and apple cider vinegar on my hair, with the Key Lime Hair Treatment sometimes from Talulah on the ends, and I eat good food – tons of greens, sprouts, healthy oils, fruit.

Oh, and I am very particular about toothpaste and I love my teeth very much. I use Dessert Essence or Eco-Dent floss and Kiss My Face toothpaste.

    essential oils in a bath.

    no poo.

    dry skin brushing.

  • I plan on starting dry brushing – I only just learned about it!! (where have i been lol)

Also, in case you are slightly breaking out, or even if you’re not, a GREAT exfoliater/toner is putting (raw) apple cider vinegar on your face overnight. (put some on a cotton ball and go over your face and let it dry)

OMG, my face got so soft.

It’s also good as a final rinse while showering , although have not personally tried it.

I also like PANGEA moisturizers (organic, fair-trade, etc).

  • Skyprincess… I take a tiny amount and really rub it between my hands so just the tinest amount is spread all over, then I lightly run my hands through my hair, starting at the bottom. Never start at the root because that will make your hair look greasy. It works great for me.. my hair smells great, and it is a totally natural product. :)

Queenfluff.. I am going to get some shea butter. I have some trouble spots near my hairline too, and ACV isn’t helping yet. :(

  • What is dry brushing?

You might be interested in the company RAW GAIA they are a range of total raw skincare, I have chatted with the girl that makes them and she is 100% RV, so you can trust that these products are as good as they say they are.

You can buy their stuff from other websites too, this was just to get started. They are a UK company though so not sure about US websites having their stuff but prob could get a UK site to ship it over…

Quiora Dry brushing is where you brush your skin to increase the circulation before you shower. It should be done in long sweeping strokes towards the heart, don’t know too much about it and have never done it, but that is generaly the idea.

  • iknikn

what type of brush do you use for drybrushing?

  • troublesjustabubbletroublesjustabubble Raw Newbie

I have a dry brushing question. Everyone always is talking about it and I’d love to get started doing it but I don’t know what kind of brush to use! I’d like to do my face too. Any suggestions on where I can get a brush?

Also, as far as ACV goes are there any special kinds I need to look for? Filtered, unfiltered, distilled. Can I get it at the grocery store?

  • evergreenevergreen Raw Master

here is a good brush for skin brushing:)..find a softer one for the face though, tjb:)the tampico is a plant fiber brush, if you are vegan you may not want a ‘natural(boar) bristle brush:) your health food store may carry the tampico.

there are instructions here and here

a good all purpose vinegar is braggs

  • troublesjustabubbletroublesjustabubble Raw Newbie

Wow! Sounds invigorating. I think I’ll start doing that soon. I’m learning so much on this thread! It’s awesome.

    Thanks Skyprincess!

heyenglish – i really don’t recommend brushing your teeth with baking soda – it can be very abrasive and harmful, long term – on your gums and teeth. i don’t recommend using only water, as that doesn’t disinfect and sets you up for gum disease and cavities.

Buy Dr. Bronners soap. Put a few drops in 2 Tbsp of water. Add a few drops of lavender oil. Dip your toothbrush in the mixture, and brush away! Make a new mixture several times a week, to prevent germs.

  • heyenglish – sorry about that. I wet my toothbrush and dip it into a jar of baking soda. It’s kind of grainy, salty, foamy. It’s also very alkalinizing. I do tend to switch back and forth with Toothsoap which is very similar to what Winona is suggesting for tooth care. (Dr. Bronners and Lavender oil) Good idea.

  • heyenglishheyenglish Raw Newbie

Thanks Monica and Winona! I already have some Dr. Bronners soap, so I’ll give that a try. I love that stuff! I’m slowly working towards no poo, so right now I’m just using that soap to wash my hair every other day. And I also use it for shaving! Other than that, I’m soap-free because I love to dry brush.

Trouble – I bought my dry brush at Whole Foods. They actually had a tub of them sitting randomly in the middle of the store, but I know you could find them in the beauty section.

  • troublesjustabubbletroublesjustabubble Raw Newbie

    thanks heyenglish.

I have another question about coconut oil. I’ve read that it’s good for your teeth….does this mean brush with it or eat it?

  • heyenglishheyenglish Raw Newbie

I know the Toothsoap that some people have referred to is made with coconut oil, so I’m guessing it can be good to brush with. I don’t think it has any disinfecting properties though, so you probably need to mix it with something else (like lavender oil) for brushing.

  • troublesjustabubbletroublesjustabubble Raw Newbie

awesome. I’m definitely going to look into that.

I’m on the verge of leaving work to get all this stuff so I can have fun with it! haha

  • iknikn

I hear you Trouble. After reading this thread I had to run out and buy a brush in the healthfood store at my lunch hour. Can’t wait to try it tomorrow morning!
