Site Use Tips and Hints

emtpdmomemtpdmom Raw Newbie

We seem to have come up with a lot of valuable hints and tips for using the site, but they're scattered all over the place. I thought it might be useful to have them all in one thread. To that end I am endeavoring to gather them in. If the hint was posted by someone other than me, I've given credit in parenthesis. I've also taken the liberty to reword and/or reformat some of them. In some cases tips covering the same subject were given by more than one person. If you provided a tip and I have overlooked your entry, please accept my apology, and feel free to add it in. As we add more ideas here, I'll try to keep the running index in post #1 updated.

Here's to Gone Raw surfing,

Brenda

EDIT: I've not posted or edited a recipe or added any pictures, so if you have SUCCESSFUL experience in these areas, please jump in here, and I'll add your topic to the index in pane 2.

    From Kandace's post on Nov 18, 2008 http://goneraw.com/story/new-feedback-link

Also, we are putting the finishing touches on the new add recipe feature before putting it live on the site. Hopefully, you'll find this much easier to do than before. If any of you have a recipe you've been wanting to post and are in an adventurous mood, we'd love to hear your feedback. Here is the link to add a recipe:

    4. Save your changes

OPTIONAL: Check the "Leave a shadow copy" box in the bottom left just above the Save/Preview buttons. To see what a shadow copy looks like, go to Forums -- Talk It Up. I moved "Eco-friendly wedding dresses" to test this feature.

    RECIPE PICTURES - MISSING

Before the site was restructured, there was the option to add multiple pictures to a recipe. When they started the upgrades the middle of November, we lost that option. The pictures are still on the site, just not paired with their recipes. To find them:

    1. Click Search, then Advanced Search.

    2. Put the title of the recipe under "Containing the Phrase"

    3. Check the "Images" box

    3. Search

The first time I did this I got two lists, one in green print and the other in blue clickable links. The clickable links get you to the individual pictures. The ones I've looked at are rather small. Sometimes I copy, then paste them in Word so I can expand them a little bit. If you expand them very far they get fuzzy.

There was some discussion several weeks ago about picture size. Those posted since the update are larger. Ray commented that he was aware of the inconsistency and would be working on the older pictures in time. I don't recall if he has said anything about the multiple picture feature returning.

From within a specific Forum Topic (for example: Health and Beauty) it is possible to sort by:

    * Topic (A to Z, and Z to A)

    * Created (date -- beginning with most recent or oldest)

    * Last reply (date -- beginning with most recent or oldest)

    RECIPES

From within the Recipe section (tab) it is possible to sort by:

    * Title

    * Name (creator / author)

NOTE: The titles of these columns are clickable links. When you click on the title, an arrow appears. The arrow is a toggle. Click once to sort in one direction, then again to reverse the sort.

DEFAULT SORT is by Last reply, beginning with the most recent activity.

PREVIEWING - POST / EDIT a REPLY Hint

When you post a reply to a thread (forum topic) or to a recipe you have the option to preview your entry before saving it to the site. Once in the Preview Mode, you can check any clickable links you provided to see if they work. This will NOT erase your post. Just check out the clickable link. Then use the "back" arrow to return to the preview. Make any changes and then save your post.

    Bluedolfin --

Sorry to report that I haven't found a way to delete a comment. My only suggestion at this point is to "edit" and clear the frame . . . something several of you are already doing. Back when Ray was more active on the site, he said the delete function was on the list of things to add. I guess with the baby coming and all the preparations that entails, some things are still on the back burner.

I'm not sure how "sage-like" I am, but thanks for the compliment. AND thanks for the tip. We're never too old to learn. I'll try to update the "Tips" thread this weekend.

    The "not so wise" Sage.

  • BluedolfinBluedolfin Raw Newbie

Oh Mighty Wise Sage (aka emtpdmom)~

Have you figured out how to delete a comment?

Re: PREVIEWING - POST / EDIT a REPLY Hint - if one holds down the [CTRL] button while clicking on the link, a new tab displays the link's webpage. If one holds down the [SHIFT] button while clicking on the link, a new window displays the link's webpage. By doing either of these options, one has access to one's message and avoids having to hit the [BACK] button to view the message.

BTW, this is standard throughout websites (it works 99% of the time... if programmed by the webmaster, a website can block the opening of a new tab or window... this is rare).

If you add this info to the PREVIEWING - POST / EDIT a REPLY Hint post, I will delete it from here.

EDIT: I just noticed that when one puts something between arrows (less than and greater than signs) it doesn't display. I put the button names in square brackets that work... the hint might be clearer now. lol

You are sagey and wise. :) Thankx for the update. When I tried to clear out a frame, it wouldn't let me save. I tried to make a blank frame by typing in a space... no joy! However, I just put in a period and the post saved.

(BTW, at our age, when we learn something, other things seem to fall out. lol)

    Re: Search by thread/forum author

This can't be combined with a keyword search, correct? One cannot search for a term within posts or recipes by a certain user? For example, there's no simple way to find a post by Carnap that mentions cashews.

  • emtpdmomemtpdmom Raw Newbie

ADVANCED SEARCH (Last edited April 3, 2009 - see Tip 2)

Well . . . that depends. If someone replied and mentioned Carnap by name in the reply, you might be able to find what you're looking for. I just did an Advanced Search with:

    1. "cashew cashews" under "Containing any of the words" (to allow for singular and plural possibilities)

    2. "Carnap" under "Containing the Phrase"

    3. Forum box checked

Here's the link to the results. I'll be curious to know if you find what you're looking for in one of these threads.

    http://www.goneraw.com/search/node/type:forum cashew OR cashews "Carnap"

To the best of my knowledge there is currently no way to search for replies by specific members. But I'll experiment with it a little longer, and let you know if I find a way.

EDIT: I've updated the Advanced Search information in reply #3 above to reflect my recent experiences with refining an Advanced Search. Maybe, with some practice, this will be a useful tool for finding information with more precision.

    RECIPE SEARCH example (posted 052309)

Let's say you are looking for easy soup recipes and the only appliance you have is a food processor. Here's one way to "pull out" the recipes that fit your criteria.

    Using the Advanced Search feature:

    1. Enter "soup" under Containing any of the words.

    2. Then select (highlight) "food processor" and "easy" from the Only in the category(s) drop down menu.

HINT: To select more than one category, hold down the Control key and click on as many categories as you want to include. Once you have all the desired categories, release the Control key.

    3. Click the "recipe" checkbox under Only of the type(s). Then click Advanced search. This yields 8 pages of recipes.

(Here's the link to the search: http://www.goneraw.com/search/node/type:recipe category:22,64 soup)

    4. Now you can start narrowing the selection by ingredients. You can keep refining your initial search. Just leave whatever is now in the Enter your keywords field and start adding terms in the remaining fields. Then click Advanced search. As long as you don't "mess" with the Keywords field, you can continue to refine until you're down to one recipe.

Kandace and Ray have provided a sophisticated search feature for GoneRaw. It may, however, take a little bit of practice, to become proficient in using it. It really is worth the effort.
