soaking nuts question

jenergyjenergy Raw Newbie

I’ve tried soaking nuts a couple times now, and I have to say I like them better that way… except… after they’ve been soaked and drained, am I supposed to dry them somehow? They seem to stay kind of damp-ish, and I noticed when I kept them in a plastic bag in the fridge they retained a lot of moisture that actually condensed inside the bag. I don’t have a dehydrator. I’m wondering if I could use my oven at a low temperature (gas oven, if that makes a difference). What do you all do after soaking nuts? Thanks for any input!

Peace, Jen

If you put them in the oven with just the light on, it would dry them out. Your oven can get up to about 90 degrees with just the light on, or so I have been told.

Also, if your weather is nice, you could put them outside to dry in the sun maybe?

  • Thats what i’ve been doing, using the sun lately do dry/dehydrate. Yesterday i dried a cup of sunflower seeds and flax seeds(both soaked overnight) in the sun. I put them out there in the morning and by the afternoon they were done. I’ve done that with almonds too. I feel it works well. Right now i have a batch of the onion bread out there too! I’ve done tomatoes, to get sundried tomatoes. They took a while, but worked real well. My mom told me to put salt on them to sundry, so thats what i did. I live in Minnesota so its not like its 100degrees here, but what sun we’re getting (in between rain!) is doing the job. I actually dont have a dehydrator either. I was gonna buy one, until i doscovered that my countertop toaster oven can to the trick. I put a thermometer in there and set it on the lowest temp and found that it holds a temp around 100degrees so I just use that and keep it running for days. I’ve been doing that since February since I went raw. I told my mom about that and she does the same thing with her toaster oven. Also, when i wanna warm food up i cover it and put it out in the sun for a while and that turns out pretty good. As far as is that ok, im not sure. I am a new raw foodist so im still learning! I do wonder if the sun “kills” what we’re trying to preserve, but im not sure! Hope this helps! :>)

I really like the sun idea, but I’d have to protect them somehow from the birds and squirrels. And possums and racoons. And probably cats, who knows, maybe they like nuts, too.. hehe… I have lots of conifers and a giant oak and many, many lil critters around my house. Heh. I’ll definitely try the oven light idea. I was kind of nervous about having a gas oven on for the hours it would take to dehydrate something, glad you suggested it that way, spiritedmama! And thanks for the toaster oven idea, mishmish… I think one of those is probably more in my price range than a dehydrator, maybe I could start there. :o)

  • Spiritedmama, Perhaps you are recalling my post from the Living Without A Dehydrator thread earlier this month? http://www.goneraw.com/forums/2/topics/373 :)

yes I was thinking of that, as well as some other stuff I have read on other raw forums.

Aha! A living without a dehydrator thread, perfect! I’ve got to start delving deeper into these threads…like I’ve seen posted here before, they’re a veritable living encyclopedia right at my fingertips (don’tcha just LOVE the internet?). Thanks for the handy link, zenpawn. Very thoughtful. :o)
