Soap Nuts for brushing and flossing teeth?

synapsynap Raw Newbie

I have read about "Soap Nuts" being used as a natural detergent for clothes and other things. It occurred to me that they may be usefull as a natural hair soap and tooth cleaning agent.

Have any of you used Soap Nuts for cleaning your teeth or washing your hair?

From what I understand, Soap Nuts, when put in water release a soapy substance that also bubbles and makes the water become like a soapy consistancy. Perhaps swishing this liquid in the mouth and brushing teeth with a soft brisled brush woud help remove plaque and bacteris from the teeth and gum line. and allow them to be rinsed out of the mouth. I am not sure of the ph of the soap nuts and what it would do to the ph of the water, but may do an experiment.

However, I have found one products for teeth cleaning that claim to use soap nuts in their tooth pastes/powders. See:

This is what they say about it:

Natural Toothpaste - Shiny White Teeth

No one can live without it. It is a part of our daily lives and a necessity too. Every morning and evening we brush our teeth with what we consider to be the best toothpaste in the market. We choose depending upon taste, price and properties. Our main concerns are whitening of the teeth, cleanliness and fresh breath. Toothpastes also come in a great variety of flavors. The most popular flavors are strawberry and mint. There are also varieties specially designed for sensitive teeth.

However on the one hand we buy and use toothpastes to protect our teeth from harm, on the other hand the harmful and harsh chemicals of toothpastes can actually cause a great deal of harm to our teeth. Fluoride is the main ingredient of most of the toothpastes we use everyday. If eaten in a small quantity fluoride is good for our body. But when we intake it in levels that are in a toothpaste, it can actually cause more damage than do us any good. Surveys have also showed that higher levels of fluoride intake can actually prove fatal for young children.

And this is just the beginning of the harmful chemicals that toothpaste contains. Some of these chemicals are hydrogen peroxide, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, Triclosan, diethanolomine and Isopropyl Alcohol. All of these have some or the other property that is harmful for the human body and unknowingly we consume these chemicals everyday.

But you need not be entirely disheartened and there is a ray of hope. The first step you can take is to buy toothpastes that do not contain fluoride. If you can not altogether stop using toothpaste then this can be your way of reducing the harm it may do to your body.

However an even better idea is to go for natural toothpastes. Yes, nature has given us herbs that have the properties of toothpaste and no harmful chemicals. These are naturally grown and found in various parts of the world and can be found easily in a drug store or online. These have the properties rivaling any toothpaste and can do wonders if mixed with each other. However you need not worry about how to do that as there are plenty of natural toothpastes available in the market.

Some of the ingredients are Neem or Azadirachta indica, Aloe vera, Soap nuts, babul or Acacia Arabica bark, Commom Jujube, Clove, Menthol, common salt and Eucalyptus oil.

Neem bark has been used in India and various other places as natural toothbrushes and toothpastes for centuries. In fact there are thousands of people who still use it in the villages. It is a cheap and convenient way of brushing for them. And the added advantage is that it is not at all harmful.

In the similar way soap nuts have been in use for centuries and still are prevalent. This can be an easy and highly effective replacement to your regular and very toxic toothpaste. If you are concerned about the health of your family and yourself, you can try this and be relaxed about your health. Not only do soap nuts protect your teeth and clean them properly, they are also 100% natural. In the process you will also be saving the environment and giving livelihood to thousands of villagers in India and Indonesia.

So make the change right now. Get a sparkling smile that is healthy as well!

And they also have a recipe on making toothpaste with Soap Nuts. Here it is:

Soap Nuts Natural Toothpaste Recipe

For soap nut toothpaste you need the following:

1. Baking soda. 5 teaspoon is a good quantity to begin with and you can increase the proportion depending upon your needs.

2. 5-6 Soap nuts can be used. A good idea is to ready the soap nuts liquid and add that.

To make the liquid just Crush 50 grams of the soap nuts and boil it in approximately 4 cups of water.

Simmer the resulting thing for 20 minutes. The liquid soap is ready!

3. You can also add a pinch of salt to make it more antiseptic.

4. A base in the form of Vegetable Glycerin can be used. Begin with 5 teaspoon.

5. You can add Peppermint or Spearmint or Pudinhara for fresh breath. 10 drops can do the trick. Tea tree oil is another optional ingredient.

Making toothpaste out of these is really simple. Just mix all the ingredients thoroughly. Adjust the quantity of glycerin to get toothpaste consistency.
