Some help with green smoothies

Hello!

Today I've made my 1st green smoothie ( spinach, carrot, apple, lemon juice, water) I drank and after 1 glass (250ml) i did vomit :(

I feel really bad now, nausea...It tastes horrible to me ( maybe too much spinach) and the texture was so disgusting :(

So anybody has some tips or recipes?

I really want to drink green smoothies because I have to increase my food per day -Im full after just a salad and I dont get more than 850 kcal per day- so i can drink tons of greens/ fruits in a smoothie but i dont want to puke!

Thanks a lot !

  • Here are some of my favorite combinations:

    1/2 cup green grapes

    1 small apple

    1/3 banana

    1 cup spinach

    1/3 cup water

    7 ice cubes

    1/2 cup red grapes

    1 orange

    1/2 banana

    1 cup collard greens

    1/2 cup water

1 cup ice (about 8 cubes)

    1 cup green grapes

    1/2 cup pineapple

    2 cups spinach

    1/2 banana

    1/2 cup water

1 cup ice (about 8 cubes)

1/2 cup grapes (red or green)

    1/2 grapefruit

    1/2 banana

    carrot top greens to taste

    1/2 cup water

    6-7 ice cubes

    1 cup green grapes

    1 orange

    1/2 pear

    1 banana

    1 cup kale

    1/2 cup water

2 cups ice (about 16 cubes)

I am not sure why it made you throw up but that is no fun! Perhaps you did put too much spinach in if the taste was bad? I am not sure, since you don't have quantities listed. Also, when I make smoothies I only use greens and fruit, so maybe leave the carrot out? Since the texture was also bad, then you may want to play around with how much water and/or ice you put in. Also, I am not sure what kind of blender you have and if that could be part of the texture issue as well. I know people make green smoothies with a lot of different blenders but I have only done it with my Vitamix, which is very powerful and the texture always turns out great. But if you are using a more simple blender then other people may have some tips for you on how to get the texture to be better. I hope that helps some. I LOVE green smoothies and hopefully you will be able to come up with a way to get them to turn out well so that you can too. :)

  • I find juicing apples and carrots better then you can blend in the greens, this would help with the texture. Try just mango and spinich blended with a little water. Also banana water and spinich. Banana seems to mask the flavour of anything. Keep trying.

I think I would have vomited too if I'd drank that smoothie! All the advice above is spot on.

    My favorite green smoothies are:

    Pinapple, banana, water & spinach

Mixed berries, banana, water & spinach

Apple juice, banana, kiwi, pear & spinach

Basically, as long as it has spinach, a banana and some other kind of fruit - it's great!

    Good luck!

  • Thanks a lot!! Im going to try all the recipes...yes I think a put too much spinach :S

Happy raw girl, yes my blender is such a *$$%&!!

Here in Spain is not possible to buy Vitamix there'are no suppliers(i dont know why!!)The most powerfull blender here is about 750w by phillips, mine is 600w good for my "past cooked vegan creams" but not good for raw recipes...

I wrote an e-mail to a kitchen supplier in USA but they dont have international shipping service :(

Buuuuut Im begging my boyfriend to go to the States in our next holidays :) and he says yes!

Im really excited about our "raw" trip hehe ( will buy vitamix, a proper juicer, an exacalibur and raw ingredients ...sounds weird but in my city, the health food store they dont sell sprouted bread, stevia, maca...and there is just ONE raw restaurant in Spain and no raw forums like this one!!

So yes, im going to visit your country soon :)

Thanks a lot to everyone!! :)

I'd leave the carrot out and just do fruit and greens.

It takes a bit to get used to spinach, it did for me anyway. I started out using romaine lettuce, it is still one of the healthier lettuces but has a more mild taste to it and blends well in a smoothie. My kids will drink smoothies with spinach but they LOVE it when I use romaine. I'm not sure if its available where you are at though. Two of my fave green smoothies (from the book Green for Life) is:

    6-8 leaves romaine

    1/2 medium honeydew

    2 cups water.

    and

    1 cup strawberries

    2 bananas

    1/2 bunch romaine

    2 cups water

    My kids fave green smoothie:

    8-10 romaine lettuce leaves

    2-3 frozen bananas

    2 Tbsp raw almond butter

    2 Tbsp organic coconut oil

freshly extracted apple juice (enough to get the blender moving)

You can also play around with the amount of liquid you add so that it is drinkable to you. Another "trick" I do when I am getting non-raw peeps to try green smoothies is to juice an apple or two, enough to get a cup and use 1 cup freshly juiced apple and 1 cup water as my liquid. It makes it just a bit sweeter and seems to appeal to people who are not used to drinking green smoothies a lil more.

  • Thanks for asking this question Annamaste! I just ( i guess almost) gave up on green smoothies too. They make me throw up as well, but I have been trying to keep them down for weeks. Thank You!

  • Have you tried in Amazon?. You could instead try buying a Thermomix-robot de cocina that do sell it in Spain, they work pretty well http://www.vorwerk.com/es/thermomix/html/ and for the rest of equipment you could purchase it in this site http://www.mundovital.es/ . I am sure there are more sites, they are just hidden ;)

Other sites that might be useful,

    Hope they are good!

  • I vomit every time I eat spinach - seems you CAN have too much of a good thing! - so I've moved on to other greens. You might have an intolerance too? Although it sounds like mixing lemon juice with spinach and carrot is a recipe for disaster! Just thinking about it makes my stomach curdle.

For a VitaMix - check eBay. I'll bet that you can get one from the UK that will ship to Spain.

    xx

  • Terilyn, I eat spinach in my salad and no problem but argfgfgf! the smoothie was horrible! Now after reading the recipes that people share here, I think my mistake was too much spinach...instead of some leaves I put a 100gr packet hahahaha so was horrible ( just the memory makes me feel sick :S)

I'll try over ebay from UK ( but im not going to tell my boyfriend 'cos I want to go the states hehe)

    Thanks 4 the recipes!!!!

  • In one of Victoria Boutenko's books she talks about the stomach having either not enough or too much hydrochloric acid that can cause nausea if you eat too much greens at once. I think her recommendation was 60% fruit and 40% greens when starting out on green smoothies. Check out her 12 steps to Raw Food or Green Smoothie revolution. Her site is www.rawfamily.com.

Thanks Juicefastfan for the kid friendly recipes.

i drink alot of spinach juice and then one day i threw up which surprised me cos i had never had problems b4. at first i surmised i was developing an allergy but then i thought about it and realised that i had been too late to go the the organic shop and just stopped by safeways.

so my conclusion is that it was high concentrations of toxins that i was consuming that made me throw up, not the actual spinach. was your spinach organic or conventional?
