Sprouting almonds

RawVoiceRawVoice Raw Newbie

Hi everyone,

I bought raw almonds directly from a farmer, so I’m pretty sure they’re really raw. I’m trying to sprout them. I’ve sprouted lots of things, and I know what I’m doing, but I’ve never sprouted almonds. This is the second full day of sprouting, and I don’t see any signs of tails yet. I know that almonds will sprout because I’ve seen sprouted, dehydrated almonds for sale in the health food store. Is there some secret to sprouting almonds? Do I just need wait longer for them to sprout? I’m even wondering if the almonds somehow weren’t really raw which would be a big bummer since I bought 10 pounds. What do you think? Have you sprouted almonds?

I tried a while ago and never saw sprouts, even after 4 days. I peeled the skin and looked, too and no go. They swelled up, but I have no idea if this means the nut is viable.

i bought some raw almonds from a farmer too, who told me specifically that they are not pasteurized according to the new rules. i asked them about sprouting. They said that it takes a while for them to sprout, even up to two weeks, i guess they grow slow because its like a tree.

Oh, okay, haha, I guess I’m too stinking impatient. The next time I get some raw almonds, I’m going to try again and be more patient.

Nuts generally tend to rot before they sprout. If you do it to release enzyme inhibitors, soaking is all that’s necessary.

123, would a “dead” almond also swell up with soaking? I”m trying to find out if any almonds I buy are really raw.

I read in a couple places that you shouldn’t sprout almonds more than two days because they might go rancid. How do almond trees ever get started?

Alix, I think a dead almond would swell up. All it’s doing is absorbing water.

Darn. Okay, thank you, RawVoice! Now I’m doubting this huge bag of hulled sunflower seeds I bought to substitute for almonds. Well, dang.

I posted a link about sprouting yesterday. The principle is that they feel the water, like rain, and they begin releasing the toxins that protect them as seeds in order to begin the growing process. The almond is already growing even if you don’t see a sprout. You should see activity in sunflower seeds quickly. I just soak, rinse and leave them alone, in a cup, until the next day. They usually split open by then. I rinse, drain and refrigerate. They continue to grow in the refrigerator.

Oh, great! So if the sunflower seeds split open, then they are alive. I saw that some of mine were split open. Yay!! (you’re talking about soaking hulled seeds, right?)

  • I soaked almonds and they didn’t sprout for like weeks. I would keep changing the water and leave them in the fridge half covered with water. I gave up on them sprouting and may have forgot about them in the fridge. Then one day I looked and one sprouted. Then I looked on a website that said almonds and other seeds like apple seeds need a cold period to imitate winter for a while. I kept it half covered in water and it kept sprouting. I tried putting it in the sun and the sprout leaves turned green and pink. a pretty color. I went out of town and left it in the sun. It dried up and died unfortunately. I should have planted it in soil after it sprouted to see how big it would get.

Yes, hulled seeds. They split in order for the shoot to pop out.

Topcat, did you put the almonds and water in the fridge from the first day? Or did you soak them for a period of time and then put them in the fridge? That is awesome you grew it so far!

  • i think i let it soak for like 8 hours at room temperature before i put it in the fridge. from experience they will go bad if you let it sit in room temperature for a long time. then change the water sometimes. and keep in fridge lightly covered with a lid. the almonds were organic and raw from whole foods.

Almonds get tiny little sprouts that are barely visible. Some one on this website wrote that they soaked their almonds for 4 or 5 days, changing the water 3 times daily, so I gave it a try. By the second day they sprout, and by the 4th day they start cleaving! They are alive!! I did this all on my kitchen counter. So easy!

  • All right! I’ve tried sprouting almonds too without luck but then again, I terribly impatient. I also don’t sprout much, just don’t crave the sprouts very often… anyway

Carmentina, where did you get your almonds?

I was thinking of buying some from www.livingtreecommunity.com, has anyone bought from them? And what luck did you have with them? Any other suggestions for purchasing the real live thing online?

I didn’t realize how spoiled I was. Even though I live in a tiny community we actually have an nut wholesaler here and they were nice enough to always special order me organic raw almonds but now they say there are pasturized too. So I’m out again!
