starting sorta slowly, somewhat overwhelmed

I recently stopped taking medication for bipolar disorder because the side effects were outweighing the prophylactic effects of the medicine (which were dubious at best since I have gotten manic on meds many times), and my doctor believes I’m okay as long as I don’t have too much undue stress in my life that will cause me to spiral into mania. I wanted to get all the residues of the drugs out of my system, so I did a 10-day Master Cleanse. I joined a MC forum and read some posts by people who recommended a raw diet after the fast. I picked up Natalia Rose’s Raw Food Detox Diet and started reading, and since then I haven’t been able to stop. I’m a little overwhelmed because of my tendency to want to do and know and have and try everything all at once and right now, but I keep taking deep breaths and reminding myself that I have plenty of time to do what I want to do.

My favorite phenomenon so far is the big smile that creeps up on my face when I pick up something raw and inviting. Way cool!

Right now, I’m fascinated by sprouting and raw coconuts and spiralizers. I am interested in green smoothies but I can’t afford a high-speed blender just yet. I have a 12-speed 450-watt Oster and I’m hoping I can make something in that. I am somewhat scared to try, though. I guess I just need to jump in!

I probably won’t be 100% raw for a while, but I am working on integrating as many of the principles of raw living as I can into my life.

I look forward to meeting and learning more from everyone here!

  • Jump onboard the green smoothie train. I’ve have been making green smoothies for 2 yrs in my 50 dollar blender ( definately not high speed ), don’t let that stop you. Have fun and good luck!

  • Geen smoothies are the best starting point in my opinion. I have been making them for breakfast for about 8 solid months on and off. I have neen using a $60 magic bullet. I think its only a 200 watt and does just fine. Experiment, have fun and enjoy taking your time! I am a little neurotic with wanting things right here and now also…but Rome wasnt built in a day right? Slow progress is better than no progress. Best of luck to ya!

  • teadeteade Raw Newbie

get a small bag of quinoa, soak it overnight, and then lay it out on a cookie tray or something.. and after one day (for me at least) they had sprouts like… triple their length..
it was the most amazing thing ever! Life grew that fast!!
    haha.

  • Thanks for the green smoothie encouragement! I’m drinking my first one right now. I used what I had in the kitchen this morning – kale, kiwi, and clementines – and I can definitely see the potential for experimentation and extreme yumminess!

I pulverized the kale with some water first, and when I opened the blender to scrape down the sides, I was blown away by how sweet it smelled. So fresh and amazing! And now it’s in my glass. Wow.

teade – thanks for the sprouting suggestion. I’ll be getting some quinoa next time I am at the store to try this out!
