too many dates?

graceinyafacegraceinyaface Raw Newbie

Has anyone heard anything about one eating too many dates? I absolutely love them and just can't get enough. It always seems as though when I find something I think is good for me that satisfies my sweet tooth it turns out to be not so great after all. I'm just wondering if this delightful obsession is too good to be true.

  • I love dates too! I only discovered fresh ones after I started raw and they're just one of the best things ever. I am trying to limit myself, I just got through a medium sized box over a few days so am saying to myself no more but I'm not sure why...maybe because I can't let myself have too much of something I love? They're quite high in sugar though high in fibre too and its hell of a lot better to eat a load of dates than something made out of refined cane sugar. They're a bit expensive too, I think thats whats keeping me away from eating them all the time lol.

I think you should let yourself have as many as you want. It's like your new favorite cd. You just have to eat it (or listen to it) all the time, and so you should. It's high in fiber so all the sugar doesn't get digested at once. Go for it.

You'll eventually play it out (after maybe a week of unbridled date eating), and then you'll reach for something else.

I normally let myself eat whatever and I went through an avocado phase, a date phase, a fig phase, and more.

    Enjoy,

    Z

I'm currently eating 24 / day for over a week now.

    Why 24??

Cuz one serving is about 8 dates, so I do 8 three times / day for a total of 510 calories.

I'm trying to maintain my weight so these things are great!!!

    ;-)

I'm not even 100% sure they are raw but I emailed the company parnoosh.com and they said they are raw, and dried at room temperature.

But anyway, anybody that eates store bought dehydrated goods is taking a chance of those products not being raw, but at least they are natural and most of the nutrients would still be intact.

    Good luck!!!

as soon as i saw this post, i knew i had to comment. i am a self-proclaimed date addict.

i usually eat about 12-15 a day when i have them in the house, so it's better that i just buy them on occasion. they are just the most delicious things ever!!! medjool are my favs.

  • Same here joannabanana! I can never have enough medjool dates until it's too much for my little tummy! Thankfully I only get them occasionally as special treats or I might have been in a sugar coma by now :P

I like zinfandel's advice but I have often felt like I have had WAY too many of those bad boys and get affected by the high sugar content. It could just be a phase thingy though, I wouldn't be too hard on myself if I were you and at the same time I'd try to kind of monitor my reactions to the food/reasons you're eating. Take care of you! :)

I order my dates from a family organic date farm in Mecca CA, they are the best! I just got a 10 pound box, ha ha!

If you love dates try this easy breezy recipe:

    Dino Kale leaves

    sliced avocado

    pitted dates

put the avocado and dates in the kale leaves and eat like a taco, soooooooo good!

Also I really believe that dates are loads better than agave so I am now trying to replace my sweets with dates and get down to using zero agave.

    Agave = a processed food

Dates = sugar the way nature intended

    Enjoy!

Leahceleste, would you mind posting the source for your dates. Love your "taco" recipe. I think I'll add some sprouts to it and maybe a little nut pate. Sounds like a winner for school lunches. I can assemble it just before I eat.

This Christmas I sent gift date boxes to my family. I too bought bulk dates. They are ooooh so good. You may like to try this company. www.datepeople.net They cant say they are organic as the cost is to high to be certified BUT they can say what they don't use. Any way, the Barhi date is ohhhhh so good.

  • beanybeeganbeanybeegan Raw Newbie

If any one tried to get the date people I am very sorry I put the wrong address. It is www.datepeople.net

Thanks emtpdmom for bringing it to my attention!

    Sorry for the wrongy.

  • Well, I'm a newbie to this forum & to the RAW diet... transitioning from SAD to RAW. Trying to go slow & it's actually going better than I thought it would. I just wanted to say that I am another date addict. I am 42 & had never bought dates or even tasted them until recently & I am hooked! I have only tried the Medjool... but plan to try others soon!!

  • Hi Tweety734 and welcome:)

I too had never tried dates before going raw. They are like candy to me now! Enjoy and good luck going raw, it sounds like you're off to a great start!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE dates... hhhmmmm yum! Fresh, plump, organic medjool are so delicious. I eat them pretty much every day. I order mine from www.SunOrganic.com where they get cheaper as you buy more in bulk. So, I stock up and store them in glass mason jars in my refrigerator.

    Cheers,

I practically LIVED on dates when I was in the Middle East. They were just about the only raw things available and I always carried them with me everywhere. Never knew there were so many types. Still think Medjools are my favorite, but now I have to buy them sparingly, as I'll always eat the whole bag when I have them.

But here's my favorite trick for Medjools...put them in the freezer (I depit first). They don't freeze, but just get harder and cold on tthe outside, but as soon as they melt in your mouth they are warm. Unbelievably good.

    Must go get some now....

  • Hi all,

I find I can't eat too many dates. I get really light-headed from all of the sugar. Although, I really do love them, I just find I have to be careful not to eat too many in one sitting. Also, I find if I eat too much fruit in general (including dates), I get sores on the tip of my tongue. I'm assuming this is from all of the fruit acid and natural sugars. Anyone have similar experiences?

  • rawcanadianrawcanadian Raw Newbie

I've been eating about 24 dates / day, but I break them up into 3 servings 8 8 and 8.

Then I usually wash them down with a glass of water, to help keep the sugar off the teeth.

  • Hi everyone I went to www.datepeople.net to check out prices...the website shows FALL 2006 on the opening page...are they no longer taking orders or something...I'm not that PC friendly hahaha

    Peace

    Lo~

  • gratefultobegratefultobe Raw Newbie

Hi, The phone # for the date people is at the bottom of their pdf and I think I have seen on other threads that is the only way to order. They will let you know what varieties are available at different times of year too. I have been wanting to call but haven't gotten to it yet. Thanks for the reminder!

  • pixxpixx Raw Master

I used to think that medjools were the only kind, and really didn't think much of them. But then I discovered barhi, and halawi, and khadrawi..... Oooooh YUM. Those three are my favorites. I've tried others, but they don't make my favs list. I find I like the soft gooey ones best. Tastes like caramel candy!

rawcanadian~ You mentioned eating dried ones... if you haven't tried fresh ones, you really need to find some to try!! Not even in the same ballpark!

  • gratefultobegratefultobe Raw Newbie

    Hi again,

I just got off the phone with the nicest man from the date people! I am now set for life, lol.

Just so you know, there is no internet ordering AND no billing until you get an invoice W/ YOUR ORDER. Wow, so excited to try the Barhi you guys have been so jazzed about.

Another FYI is the 2006 pdf prices are changed. (no!) My 10lb. was 47.00 + shipping. Which is like 7 bucks over what 10 lbs. of medjools would be from costco.

  • Costco has dates? Gratefultobe can you please post the number you called...I'm not seeing it on the pdf...it freezes up for some reason. What types of dates do they have to purchase? Are they dried or what? Thanks in advance!!

For all you date connoisseur's...if possible could you describe the various flavors of the most readily available dates? I know everyone has their own taste and preferences but I have not had that many dates...heck i don't even know the kind I have had LOL

Looking forward to all your descriptions.

    Lo~

  • gratefultobegratefultobe Raw Newbie

    Hi Glam,

Yep, mine does. I'm in CA tho. I've bought deglet noor (pitted & cheaper) there too, not good BTW. I think flavorless. Like sugar balls or something, so I might end up tossing those. And the medjools. They come in little 2lb. containers for 8 bucks (actually went back & found the receipt). They are very good. Pretty sure both varieties are dried.

So looking forward to the date people ones. The description says 'wet pack' so I'll let ya know if theyre any different. Anyhow, the # is 760-359-3211. Cool gent. It is a long list of diff. dates they carry but if it wont come up when you click on 'download pdf' you may just need to install adobe reader. Its free. m

  • pixxpixx Raw Master

gratefultobe~ Don't throw them out!! Use them in a recipe, where you just need a sweetener, without flavor. :~)

  • pixxpixx Raw Master

glamazon~ I find this site (link below) to be great! Just click on "fruit" then head on down about a third way of the page. They have *tons* of date types described there. This site lists beans, grains, vegetables, etc, etc. Helpful site!

  • i think when youre raw there's nothing you can have too much of within reason, but you need to make sure that youre balanced. eating a lot of dates is fine as long as youre eating more fruits and veg than everything else. i think balance is key to making sure youre getting optimal nutrition.

  • If I eat a lot of dates and/ or fruit (especially citrus fruits), I get little sores on my tongue. Does anyone else get this becuz of the acidity? I always take this as a sign that my body is too acidic/ out of balance.

  • gratefultobegratefultobe Raw Newbie

Yeah, I think if I noticed I was becoming addicted to something I'd leave it alone too. I've found leaving cooked food alone to be the best thing so far to not eating compulsively. It seems to leave me making really good choices & pretty well balanced. How about you guys?

Wish I could have you guys drop by to try the Barhis. I'll see how long 10 lbs. stays around cause it seems I'll be the only one eating them. I keep trying. Oh well, it was a splurge for sure.

pixx, of course you're right. I'll save them for an ingredient. I'm not really a wasteful person at all. :) Oh and thanks for that site you threw up there. Now they're going in the fridge.

  • pixxpixx Raw Master

gratefultobe: "Now they're going in the fridge."

You can freeze them, too. They don't dry out so fast that way. When I get an order in, I divide them up into small baggies, and freeze most, with the balance in the fridge.
