Traditions

Food has the ability to make us feel safe and secure~ for example, that special dish your mom always made~ and also just a celebration of the home and a persons culture~ how do you hold onto that when you regect the foods that stimulate those feelings? Somethings are hard to substitute for~ I would like to know your thoughts~

why not just eat those foods when you feel like its important to do so?

i have been vegan for 8 years, vegetarian for 17 and i have come to believe that the humans in my life and my own feeling of connectedness is as important as my diet. i eat raw and vegan all the time so, when i am at a family gathering or a grandmas house and someone has prepared a special ancestral food, i eat a small bit of it. it makes me feel more connected to everyone, and it makes it easier for them to relate to me.

at home i am always trying to recreate those foods in the vegan raw style. when i succeed, i bring them and share them with my non vegan family.

are you early on your path? when i first started, i did feel like it was necessary to be really strict.

  • I grew up in New Mexico and my comfort foods there were tamales, pasole, and chips and very very hot salsa.

Through my whole life whenever I felt sad, or wanted to be reminded of home, I eat those. I havent tried to tamale recipe on here yet, but I tried a salsa recipe I found elsewhere, but I miss the chips.

I lack a dehydrator so I cant make chips of my own :(

I agree with devittles. I don’t feel like I need to prove anything by always being loyal to my typically raw diet. I used to. I eat raw for health, not to be isolated from family tradition. Mostly raw is better than no raw. I don’t usually have any adverse reaction to cooked food (I eat it so rarely), but it may be that I just don’t feel it. I won’t eat chips, donuts or pop, but zucchini bread during the holidays doesn’t seem like a major infraction to me.

  • I can relate. First I started celebrating hanukkah and abandoned Christmas celebrations with my family and now I am going raw. They are going to disown me for sure!!!
