Trying to Balance Hormones post birth control pills
I could use some advice. I stopped taking birth control pills six months ago. I feel like now my body is out of whack. Periods are super short and I feel like I'm gaining a lot of weight around my middle without a dietary change. I've had a weird history with BCPs. I took a super high estrogen Birth control about 15 years ago for a few years and gained weight (15 pounds) within 3 weeks of getting off the pill. I wasn't aware that particular pill was very high in estrogren (typically given to women nearing/ in menopause) because I was given that pill by a college nursing center. Then, about three years after getting off the pill the first time, I got back on the pill for the next ten years up until six months ago. When I got on the pill again, I dropped about 10 pounds seemingly effortlessly. Now my dilema is how to balance my hormones naturally. I've tried taken a black cohosh supplement and using a natural progresterone cream, and taking red clover. Any other ideas?
hey ok getting your liver into gear is the best move, the liver will then be able to metabolise and deal with the excess hormones.
the best way to do this is via bitter herbs, they must come in contact with the back of the tongue(bitter receptors). bitter herbs cleanse your liver very effectively so you will need to up your water intake.
vitamin b's from natural sources such as rice bran, seaweeds, bee pollen, nettle leaf etc help the liver breakdown excess hormones.
supporting your good flora is another good idea as the good bacteria help breakdown excess estrogen metabolites.
adaptogenic herbs such as jiaogulan, ashwagandha, maca root and so on help balance hormones and support the adrenal glands.
Hey kminty3, I'm kind of in the same boat as you. Came off the pill last Dec after taking it for 13 years. Would love to get pregnant but periods are all over the place.
Been trying to take maca regularly and bought some bee pollen but feel a bit odd taking it as I'm vegan and I know it's probably not ethical.
Been having reflexology but not sure how much it's actually helped.
Interested about powerlifer's suggestion above so might look into that too.
I've found it emotionally quite hard dealing with this as I'm now trying to look after myself but it's like my body is punishing me for the years I took the pill.
I had a Mirena hormonal contraceptive coil for 10 years. In January of this year I suffered a tonic clonic seizure whilst on my dinner break. A succession of seizures followed. I suspected it could be linked to my hormonal coil
as I was suffering from other symptoms (cracks at side of mouth, dry skin, low mood, pins and needles in arms and legs and many more), which I promptly had removed.
I have found information which links the hormonal coil with seizures. It's a complex link that is caused by a knock on effect of different biochemical reactions over many years of usage but it is a real link.
I am now trying to fix my huge hormonal imbalance naturally.
I started the 80/10/10 diet because Insulin Resistance was at the core root of all the knock on problems and 80/10/10 fixes Insulin Resistance. Within 4 weeks I had lost 10lbs of the stone I had gained (when previously nothing had worked) and have been seizure-free for quite some time now.

Sv3 out of all i recommended there id def start with the bitter herbs used twice maybe even 3 times daily, before meals on the back of the tongue, you'll notice better digestion also as thats what there for.
The liver is the master hormone regulator and increasing its capabilities in metabolising the excess hormones is the best way to achieve hormonal balance. It can take time though.
Your health food store will probably carry a digestive bitters formula but 9/10 its always swedish bitters which i dont really care for, they contain stimulant laxative herbs which arent good used long term. Better choices are grape or chinese bitters, or any bitters formula not containing stimulant laxative or berberine containing herbs. The latter isnt much of a big deal as at the dosage of half a teaspoon it wont kill the good flora off.
thanks Powerlifer. I picked up some bitter herbs, maca and milk thistle. I'm guessing I should use the bitter herbs twice a day pre meal and then take the maca and milk thistle whenever? I also had been taking a daily multiple, calcium supplements, b12, msm/glucasomine, red clover and black cohosh. Should I ditch all those?
You can take the bitter herbs 2-3 times a day, pre meal is the best idea make sure the bitters come in contact with the back of the tongue as thats what stimulates the bitter receptors.
The maca/milk thistle can be taken anytime just make sure you take 30 mins before or after a meal.
Them supplements ontop shouldnt be a problem, pending that the calcium isnt oxide which is caustic and alkalises the digestive tract which isnt a good idea.
Ohh and remember to up your water intake as bitters really cause the liver to detox heavily.
