What to do w/ fruit's seed?

germin8germin8 Raw Master

I just got my Vita Mix. With the ability to blend just about anything… I can toss pretty much anything in there, turn it on, and voila! So… for all those fruits with seeds that I usually spit out and toss out (like cherries, watermelon, oranges, lemons, limes, apples, papaya, melons), should they also be removed before putting them in the blender? I don’t doubt the blenders ability to blend it; what I want to know is…

...is the seed edible?

...in what quantities?

...should I eat it?

...will it still taste good?

...which ones should not be tossed in?

It’s easy not remove the seeds from nectarines, plums, or peaches. And probably wouldn’t add them in… but have you tried blending it? I watched a YouTube video where they took the cantelope seeds and made a “nut milk” from it. Has anyone tried this? We can eat this???

I do cantaloupe smoothies alllllll the time, it is complete heaven! Cut a small-med cantaloupe in half. remove the skin and throw the whole half in the blender (cut up) along with the seeds, add about a cup or 2 of water and add half a vanilla bean and blend that baby up! It is fabulous!

Anyhow, as for the other seeds, I guess it’s just preference, what your beliefs are, and how lazy you are about picking out the seeds! Some people say no, you’re not supposed to eat the seeds… Other people say yes, seeds contain so many nutrients, bla bla bla. Here’s what seeds I use… Watermelons- yes, citrus fruit- half of the time, apples- most of the time, papaya- no. The papaya seeds are really strong so therefore I don’t blend them, but you can dry them and use in place of cracked black pepper. I’ve never blended cherry pits, but I wouldn’t do them cause they’re pretty hard. Pits can be pretty tough as far as I have understood. Apricot pits are GREAT though. Just crack open the shell and inside is a little seed thing. I always blend those up. Hope that helps ya out a bit :-) Enjoy your new blender!!! I know you will!

That helps a great deal! I’m going to try the canteloupe! I thought apple seeds have cyanide.

Papaya seeds for pepper? Wow, we eat a lot of papaya… and never use pepper. This will be interesting to try.

I know peach pits are poisonous… they also contain cyanide.

Apricot pits… wow, I had no idea you can eat the seed inside. Hmmm.

    Thanks coconutty!

Yeah, there’s seeds that contain cyanide… I’m not one of those people who worry about it though! I’ve heard of plenty of other people blending the apple seeds even though they’re considered “bad”. I don’t do it all the time, or consume a lot of them so to me, there’s nothin to worry about :-)

  • Yeah, I think apple seeds contain cyanide. While I wouldn’t make a milk out of apple seeds, leaving them in when you juice is okay. Our nutritionist said so! :)

Mmmm, I LOVE cantaloupe smoothies made like coconutty describes, and I never really liked cantaloupe before I started on raw. But the seeds make it so creamy and delicious! That’s one of my favorite uses for the vitamix.

I have almost exactly the same preferences as coconutty (except I’ve never tried apricot seeds!). I love using the seeds in all melons, and with citrus it just depends on how lazy I am. I don’t usually blend apple seeds, but that’s just because they’re so easy to avoid.

I do think cherry pits would get a little gritty.

  • Hi I just found this on the internet about seeds. I also found a link that says they prevent cancer. The main thing is to be really careful because they say 7-10 can kill a child.

“Fruits of the rose family- including cherries, apples, plums, almonds, peaches, apricots, and crabapples- contain in their seeds substances known as cyanogenetic glycosides, which on ingestion release hydrogen cyanide gas through an enzymatic reaction. They can most certainly do you in. Since 1957, Turkey- a big apricot country- has reported nine cases of lethal poisoning from apricot seeds. Unfortunately, victims of such poisonings have a habit of kicking the bucket before doctors have a chance to ask them how many seeds they’ve eaten; in addition, the amount of amygdalin- the most important cyanogenetic glycoside- varies from species to species, and since the poisoning does not involve a direct transfer of cyanide from one place to another, “lethal dosages” of these various seeds are hard to pin down. Use the following as guidelines: (1) bitter almonds contain by far the greatest amount of amygdalin, and it takes 50-70 of them to kill an adult, 7-10 to kill a child. (2) Ingestion of about a cupful of any of the above seeds is pushing things a bit.

If you’ve been munching on seeds for years and have never felt any ill effects, you can safely continue to eat them in similar quantities without worrying. Keep in mind, however, that one gluttonous binge will put you away forever. ..

Symptoms of cyanide poisoning are excitement, convulsions, respiratory distress, and spasms. Another warning sign is death, which can occur without any of the other symptoms.

cyanide can also build up in the body which can lead to a lethal dose from a much smaller amount- and different pits have varying amounts so you can’t be sure what you are getting.

Thanks writeeternity… my next question was going to be: Does cyanide (from apple seeds) accumulate in the body or is it removed? Can it be cleansed out… and by what?

So, that last sentence you wrote answered most of my question. I heard it accumulated in the body, just wasn’t sure.

    Thanks.

  • Many seeds contain cyanide but you can still consume them because they are counteracted by another substance in the seeds. Just like the two elements that make water can cause fires but mixing them together can create a substance that will put out fires. The Bible instructs us to eat the whole fruit, even the seed. And peach seeds which contain cyanide also can help aid to prevent certain cancers.
