What foods should be avoided that are potentially poisonous/harmful raw?

CarnapCarnap Raw Newbie

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but maybe fractionally.

Can someone provide me with a list of stuff not to eat raw? Because I avoid potatoes, but eat sweet potatoes and turnips... Are those bad?

Thanks

  • Raw taro root, it really hurts your tongue speaking from experience

I'm not sure if you'll find total consensus on this question -- there are things I wouldn't eat raw off the vine/tree like eggplant and olives, but I would if they've been marinated in an acidulated solution (vinegar or citrus juice, for example).

Have any of you ever used radish tops? Either in a green smoothie or a salad. I had the same question on beet tops when I first started out and I ran across a thread where someone was wishing she could find beets w/ their tops attached so I tried em and they were great in a whole food smoothie. Yesterday I was cleaning radishes and was tempted but thought I'll see if you guy's have ever used em. Thanks.

  • I use radish tops all the time, usually in juice, but I have thrown some into green smoothies from time to time, too.

I don't think they are the tastiest greens in the world, but they're fine to use.

Awesome, I thank you. These ones look really fresh and nice. I feel braver now. :)

Everyone probable already knows this one but.. Carnap, never eat the tops of rhubarb. That's the only one I KNOW of.

    Anyone else???

  • I learned from experience never to eat poke raw.

Huong is way right. Raw taro root is poisonous. Also never juice mango with the skin still on or if you bite it off the skin be careful. A lot of people develop a rash. Be careful with buckwheat greens (not sprouts). If you eat a lot like when juicing you can get horribly sensitive skin that burns and rashes.
