What went wrong?

Hi, everyone. First off, as a newbie, let me tell you, this site has been great; so thanks.

I transitioned into the raw diet a few days ago and have been experiencing great energy for my runs, and have altogether-other than a vague hungry sensation—been feeling great. But tonight I went on a short run, and after about a half mile I got all short-of-breath and light-headed and sweaty.

I’m going to list what I ate today and if any of you experienced foodies can look at this and tell me if something is wrong I would appreciate it. I’m thinking it may just be that I didn’t wait long enough after my green smoothie before running because my gut felt awful.

Breakfast: 1 quartered hothouse tomato, 1/2 grapefruit, handful of almonds and cashews, about five inches of cucumber and 1/8 white onion.

Lunch: 6-8 cherry tomatoes, 1 avocado, 2 halves of mango, 2 handfuls of cashews and almonds, 1/8 white onion

Early dinner—4PM or so: Green smoothie made of two de-veined kale leaves, 1/4 pineapple, 1 banana, 2 glasses of water, ginger and peppermint for taste.

Did I not get enough? This is indicative of my diet for the past few days. What do you people think?

Thanks so much, I really felt awful on my run—like a newbie runner, all sweaty and needing to lie down, and shouting to my running partner to go on and leave me. It was like Vietnam.

You may have to experiment to find the right combination of foods that work for YOU. I can’t eat tomatoes and I stopped eating mangos, so those would be wrong for ME. There isn’t one diet that works for all. Eat something different tomorrow and see how you feel.

  • Thanks, 123. But does that amount seem like an example of under-eating? It seems like enough calories to me; I’m a slim guy; only weigh 140.

  • You might want to consider the possibility that you are experiencing some detox symptoms. I run as well and I recall about a week into my raw transition, I went on a normal trail run and experienced some dizziness and stictches….I’ve never gotten stictches from running. And I’ve never NOT finished that trail, even on a “bad” day, but I had to stop about a 1/2 mile from completion. It was weird. Also, your diet seems a bit sparse for a male. Dudes need more calories. Maybe pick up some hemp seeds and add another green smoothie (or 2) in there. These are just some thoughts…I’m sure you will get more input shortly!

    Happy running!

  • I agree this daily diet does seem a bit sparse. I only weigh 102 but eat a lot more than that most days. Some days that would probably be ok for me. Now I see that you only weigh 140. Maybe just a bit more would be better. Especially since it sounds like you’re pretty active.

  • Maybe, Cherie.

I like writing that. Lemme do it again. Maybe, Cherie …

Oliver, that is exactly how I felt—stitches 1/2 mile in. Awful. More Calories? Hmmmm. I tell you all though, afterward, I decided to fork over the dough and drive with two friends to a raw food restaurant down the street and it was just AMAZING and I felt that I was getting some stuff that I needed. Okay, the Gojiberry cake was pushing it, but still… thank God for Santa Monica, CA. If I still lived in Northern Michigan …

  • Hi Zooey. I’m not an expert, but just reading your list, I immediately doubted if you are eating enough – either not getting enough simply in calories or possibly certain types of extra nutrients your body would need – since you are an athlete and obviously burn far more calories running and working out as you do than the typical person.

I would recommend checking out some raw vegan athlete websites to see what and how much they typically eat in a day. Here are a few just from googling:

    http://www.brendanbrazier.com/

    http://www.totalrawfood.com/rawfood/&cat=3&p=7

And congrats on going raw! :)

  • Hi, everyone. I know you were all losing sleep about my aborted run this past week so I thought I’d give you an update—actually, this might be of interest to you runners out there.

I was guessing that the collapse I had while running had less to do with my diet than with the timing of my meal. It seems I was right. Knowing that I had a run this morning I made sure to eat /drink/chew my green smoothies right when I woke up—at about 4AM or so. This meant that by the time 9AM came around the food had settled and was already being worked on in my tummy.

I ended up running a great 13 mile run in relentless heat up the canyons and back in Santa Monica. Now my running partners are jealous of the raw food diet thing, and I feel better knowing that I’m not going to turn into some emaciated ghost who barely has enough strength to braid his hemp anklets.

Har har. That was mean, sorry. Anyway, it works! Thanks for all your feedback; this site rocks.

I find bee pollen to increase my stamina massively.

  • Zooey Glass – I am new to eating raw and running. You might want to try this website.

    www.runningraw.com

Turns out it’s the same guy as one of the previous given sites.

  • I can second the bee pollen on the energy tip.

And just a note I would watch your food combining when it comes to running, I go running on a odd/even schedule and I can’t mix nuts with fruit when I go, just a thought.

Yes, that was mean zooey glass. But funny as hell. ;o)

  • alpdesignsalpdesigns Raw Newbie

Yes Zooey, you could probably stand to eat more, especially if this represents your typical daily diet and you are still transitioning.

This is similar to what I eat in a day (more leafy greens for me).I eat less nuts if you can beleive it, my being such an advocate of them!! I think you need more especially if you are running! Try adding a midmorning and midafternoon snack.

I thought it was funny, too, Zooey; and also your reference to sucking pine cones in another thread. And I love Salinger, too.

  • Awesome, Greenie. Always good to meet a fellow fan.

Most brilliant writer. You’ve reminded me how long it is—too long—since I’ve read him. So… are you published anywhere? Besides this forum, I mean.

  • Hi-ho. That’s getting too personal for me; Greenie. But I appreciate your interest and can obviously tell you that this is not my real name. Sorry to be all dark and mysterious but if I should ever go back to eating Snickers bars and Velveeta I don’t want any record of this brief foray into the fringes of healthiness …

  • two words….more greeeens!!
