What's next?

So, I’ve had my Vita-mix 5200 for about a week now, and I love it. I’m blending EVERYTHING ;) I see tons of awesome recipes that look delish, but most of em require a food processor or dehydrator. What would ya’ll recommend for the next purchase after the Vita-mix?

Thanks in advance!

get a cuisinart 3 or 7 cup food processor (3 for one person, or 7 if you tend to make larger batches at once). get used to uncooking for a while before getting a dehydrator – they take some skill to make good dishes in, typically either if you have previous culinary skill it’s easier. OR if you’ve been making raw food for about a year, then it’s easy to make tasty dehydrator food. i dont yet have the skills, so i just dry fruit in the dehydrator – it’s sitting around till i’m better at uncooking.

  • I think it would depend on what is most important to you. If you crave the crunch of a cracker over the taste of a cheese made out of nuts etc. then by all means buy a dehydrator. If you just need that variety of nut pate and cheese in a wrap or dip then buy a cuisinart. I have a funky food processor that does not work as well as a cuisinart but I think that I really need a high speed blender first before a cuisinart. I plan on getting a Waring Xtream high speed blender to make those green smoothies and tahini and then a cuisinart. You really need both but it has to be your individual priority based on your needs.

  • i’m able to make a lot of stuff that most people say to use a food processor for and not a blender in my vitamix with no problems. i’ve made nut cheese in my vitamix and it comes out great! i have a super cheapy food processor from target that i only use to make things like pesto or cauliflower ‘cous cous’ to get the choppy texture right. i don’t have a dehydrator either, and i want one… but i’m also okay without one. i think i’d eat way too much dehydrated stuff instead of whole foods with all the water content etc in tact if i did have one. but one day just for some goodies :)

When I first started raw I bought a 7 cup Cuisinart processor. I just bought a 14 cup and will give my 7 cup to my daughter. I like to double and triple many of the items I will be putting in the dehydrator. It was such a problem with the smaller processor. Plus, I make large amounts of salas etc.

At the time of buying a 7 cup processor I soon bought an Excalibur 5 tray ddehydrator, Sadly, I soon realized I needed a larger one. So this year my DH got me a 9 tray. This has been a blessing. As now I have one for warming meals and other short timimg foods and one for long dehydrating. Like having two ovens. smile So as rosehebrew says, it depends where your food needs are.

I started out with a cheapy blender from Target. I got a dehydrator a few months ago, I really missed the crunchy texture. But I am not using it as much as I thought I would. These are the only two things I have.

I’d say go for the food processor. I’ve only been raw for a month and a half, and I used to love to bake, but I haven’t missed the “cooked” texture of anything. I definitely need to invest in a bigger food processor, though, because I use it usually 1-3 times a week, and I get tired of doing half-batches of recipes because my processor is so small. Besides, a food processor doesn’t take up nearly as much space!

  • Awesome! Thanks for all the help guys. Much appreciated. I think we actually have a small 3 cup food processor and didn’t realize it until now, haha. I was thinking it was something larger, like a high-tec juicer.

i use the food processor more but probably could get away with using the blentec for some of the stuff i use it in. But the dehydrator is pretty good to have. if you don’t like icy-cold food you can heat stuff up which i like about it.

Lagston, with your high-speed blender your juicer may never see the daylight again… unless you’re getting way too much fiber from your blended drinks/soups/etc.

You got a blender and a food processor… how about a dehydrator? But, I think a bigger food processor is ideal. I use that all the time! I guess it depends what you make most often.

Maybe a spiralizer or mandolin slicer would be next…

Next on our list is an ice cream maker/freezer. But, we have no room for one in our tiny kitchen.
