What's wrong with what I'm eating?!

RawsikiRawsiki Raw Newbie

I keep getting upset stomach and the runs…like every other day. Today, I feel majorly unwell. Here’s what I ate yesterday:

Breakfast: 1 med. red apple, 1/2 cup oat groats with 30 raisins and 30 peanuts

Lunch: Very small raw sandwich of oat groats, black pepper, onions, garlic, lettuce, tomato, nutritional yeast, and macadamia nuts, 1/2 cup Broccoli, 1 cup green lettuce, 1/2 cup peas, 1 extra small sweet potato

Snack: 1 orange, small handful peanuts

Dinner: 1 small sweet potato, 3 oz. tofu (I know, not raw), 1 cup lettuce, 1/2 cup broccoli, 1/2 cup peas, 1 tbsp nutritional yeast, with 2 tsp vegan butter (yeah, yeah, not raw).

Dessert: 1 date with 1/2 tsp macadamia nut butter with a pinch of onion

Obviously I’m doing something wrong. My stomach’s going crazy. It’s not the tofu or the vegan butter (in case you guys think it’s the culprit since it’s not raw) because when I eat that, I am usually fine. Did I overdo it with the nuts? Or too much of one specific food? Maybe it was the onions and garlic?

  • how long have you been eating this way? when i first made the change to raw, i got some stomach upset too, and then it got better.

i would say your food list looks fairly complicated. also, i don’t react well to sprouted grains (except buckwheat, after dehydrating). and yes, the garlic and onions could be contributing.

however, if you are new to raw, i’m guessing these are your detox symptoms. you may want to add some steamed grains/veggies until they start to get better. making big changes all at once is a shock to the body, and it reacts.

    hope you feel better!

Peanuts are hard to digest… and you might have overdone the nuts. I usually get a stomacheache if I eat too many nuts in one day. About one big handful is enough for me. :D

  • I’ve noticed that if I eat to many nuts or complicated, ill-combined foods I got a stomach ache, sluggish digestion and foul foul FOUL gas. Maybe try a day of only green juice, which really seems to alkalize my system and set me back on track. Good luck!!

try having a couple of mono-meals each day, instead of combining so many different things. I think that will help settle things down a bit. good luck!

I agree with newbie on mono-meals. Fiber is the most logical culprit.

  • its always garlic that is the culprit for me.

Oh, and I’ve heard a lot of raw foodists say that they only eat fruit for breakfast, like two apples and a pear or something like that. I usually do that, and then snack on a veggie or something before lunch.

  • depending on where you get your oat groats, you could be having a gluten intolerance reaction. i think it depends on how the oats are processed. i know my gluten intolerance got much more pronounced once i went high raw because everything else i ate was so clean. now when i do have cooked food (about 20% of my diet) i cannot have any gluten or i get quite ill.

Yeah, eat you fresh fruit alone, or else it ferments in your tummy, and that will make you feel yuck!

    1) too complicated a breakfast. solution: have a fresh juice, eat fruit, and/or a (green) smoothie

    2) too many nuts. solution: make sure you soak them, eat them later in the day, and replace some with seeds or avocado, or oils, or coconut meat.

    3) eating gas-inducing foods like broccoli, YEAST (not raw and not great for the tummy). solution: go for softer greens like spinach, or use a food processor to break broccoli down into a rice or mash. grind flax and sea salt together to make a good nutritional yeast substitute.

    4) poor food combining. solution: i wouldn’t go nuts with mono-meals if you are used to more complicated dishes. but try to eat fruit first or alone.

calm your tummy with not too ripe bananas, and lots of greens.

My stomach freaked out when i ate oats. Also when I ate too many nuts. When my digestion goes wack, I stick to very simple foods for a day or two: green smoothies, fruit, salad, and some seeds and fresh mixed greens (instead of nut dishes) for a simple dinner. A day or two of only fruit really takes care of all stomach issues. And, clearing your stomach out with tons and tons of fiber is really recommended. You should do this so that your colon is clean, and isn’t keeping around whatever affected you from previous days. Try a tablespoon of flax in green smoothies, twice a day.

  • my first thought immediately runs to the oats, onions, garlic and PEANUTS! those always used to give me indigestion. I don’t eat them anymore…they’re not raw anyway unless you seek out the spanish or jungle ones. Anyway, raw or not, take it easy on the complex foods there ;) And you’ll be more than fine!

Upset stomach and the runs to me are not a sign of something being wrong. Not having these reactions to tofu and butters are also not a sign of these things being right. Firm stool is to me a sign of poor health. Other Vegan animals don’t make “turds” why should we? Have you ever seen Elephant or Horse poo? Keep on Plopping!

Without knowing your history, I’d hesitate to say more other than give you my usual… How can anyone know what normal feels like until the fully detox. This to me means at least 3 months, 100% raw. Until you have done this, you are keeping yourself in detox, by continuing to add toxins as your body tries to eliminate them. Once you have felt what you are like without regularly adding toxins, then and only then can you make sense of your bodies reaction to meals.

Also check out The Dead Food List , you will find that it not only the Tofu and the Butters you are eating, that are not raw.

I believe the answer to your trouble lies in simpler meals with fewer ingredients. I only occasionally have raw treats which have many ingredients, as they do tend to upset my stomach a little. Also, go easy on the nuts—our bodies don’t really require nuts…so I would keep it at a 1/2 cup per day at the MOST. Try eating fruit meals. The basis of your diet should be fruit. Then that is supplemented with greens and a small amount of nuts. Keep dehydrated things to a minimum. Also, raw onions and garlic could upset your stomach! But simplicity is key. Hope that helps! :)

I’d say the OATS and peanuts.
