Wheatberries?

I am curious… I think I’ve only seen maybe one recipe using sprouted wheatberries. Is this because of allergies or is there some side effect that people find unhealthy? I don’t think I have any allergy to wheat, though I know it’s common. Are the wheatberries substitutable (word?) in recipes for buckwheat or oat groats? Have any of you found significant benefit from eliminating wheat from your diet?

I think the problems is that if you sprout them for longer than 24 hours they start to smell grassy and inedible. Not many people realise this and think it is them – they just can’t sprout properly. Just sprout till tiny 1mm tails are there – just 24 hours.
I use them for bread and making cakes – like Victoria Sandwich Sponges, and they are wonderful.
I was wheat intolerant when cooked (personally I think everyone is intolerant to cooked food!) and I don’t have any problems with wheatberries now.
They are a great food, very high in nutrients.
There are those who will disagree with me who believe that we are not meant to eat grains at all. But I don’t really know anything about that, just my personal experience with them. I had given up wheat for years, but still no problems with raw sprouted wheatberries.
Oat groats are not raw unless specifically made so, and priced accordingly! so they’re not a practical substitute. Buckwheat could work but only if they were added when dried because when they’re soaked and sprouted the texture is very different to wheat so it wouldn’t be a good substitute either. Maybe spelt, barely or rye would be a better substitute? I’d just use the wheatberries.

  • I love wheat berries. Soak, sprout, mix with dates, dehydrate…. instant raw bread. SOOOOOOO good!

  • I agree with Zoe! Flour and wheat products that have been processed give me the worst psoriasis breakouts, but with sprouted products and wheat grass, I have no issues at all. I like eating the sprouts when they are just about turning green :) they are slightly sweet and just so tasty to me. I have never heard of Victoria Sandwich Sponges, please share Zoe!
